I love this song. The breakdown at the end, and when he kind of hums/scats a melody around 4: 28 is my favorite part. This is the John Mayer I love. Sucker. No Such Thing (acoustic version from Inside Wants Out, Room For Squares version was awful in comparison), Why Georgia, St. Patrick's Day.. incredible music. The only song after that that felt like old John, to me, was Daughters. I wish he'd go back to his roots and play music like this. It was beautiful.
@marron93 Yepp, He got that Granuloma on his Pharynx, or was it his Larynx? It was either his throat or his actual Voice Box, which would be Larynx. All "ynx's" aside, it sucks huge Scrotum that hes MIA right now. I was so hyped to have the album come out in October; I saw him & Keith Urban at the Tiger Jam in April & that ruled so I was so excited! Now I'm just bummed that he's on IR haha; but I could totally hear the development of it, really sad. Oh well, Born & Raised will be all the better!
theirs so many amazingly written unreleased Mayer songs that need to be compiled and released in an album. Most of John's unknown songs would be greatest hits for most singer/ songwriters today. He has set the bar for talent, versatility, and most importantly, the drive & work ethic to keep valuable music coming for his loyal fans. Their wont be another like him.. Anyway, Thats just what I think.
Its just so frustrating to know that this guy actually composed and played this song live in bars when he was what? 20? 21? And remember that this is just a random recording at some random bar,, he can play like this anywhere, anytime and even back then 100% perfection.
To all the people arguing, type it into google, hes admitted to using autotune on albums several times, he does live sometimes to, though he never used to, on where the light is theres a point where he starts laughing cause the autotune is ridiculous. Just because you use autotune on an album doesnt mean you cant sing it, just means you want it perfect for the album, most people cant tell live anyway
His could release an entire cd of unreleased shit and it'd be ten times better than anything out there right now. except maybe his own released stuff.
@rutherfordmusic It would be 10x better than any of his albums. All his songs he wrote before he was famous are greater than anything he's capable of writing now.
@missprissm. He says "can I have a little less vocal in the monitor, I can tell already" telling the sound guy to lower the volume of his vocal mic so he can hear the guitar better
Saw Mayer live and I may have well been listening to a recording of 14 year old girls screaming for 2 hours! Bless them for their love of his music but I did wish they would shut up and just enjoy some real music!
alot of artists have songs that are unreleased. alot of those songs turn out to be just as good if not better than the hits. i'm just glad that we have an avenue to hear such well kept secrets. there's no denying john is one of the greats who will outlive his years through his music.
hey girls in the background. shut the hell up? im trying to enjoy some real music. you know.. the kind people make with real instruments, not autotune.
@eWilliamCardenas how could you say he uses autotune when, he sounds the same singing into a video camera, autotune is an effect procesor to correct pitch, check out some vids where he is singing with out a microphone and it will sound the same. no autotune
@kylegarrettmusic what he means is stuff like, on the record, he'll use autotune for stuff like making his voice not clash with the frequencies of a snare drum etc. issues in that manner.
He's playing at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta. Before he was really famous. I wish he'd make an album just of his Eddie's Attic songs, they were a completely different but wonderful sound.
His previous partner for Inside Wants OUT and some of Room For Squares (Clay Cook) who helped write "neon" and other songs covers a full album on his birthday there every year
@mayerfan93 Agreed, not to mention that Eddie's was one o my old haunts back then. There, Joe's Place, and Smith's Ol Bar up in Buckhead...=-) I really miss those days terribly, back when life made sense and everyday wasnt a struggle just to stay calm, cool, and collected. Gettin older sux, lol
On balance it's probably better than the incessant screaming that he receives at his concerts today (good job monitoring systems are so good now, or else he could have gone the way of The Beatles!).
thanks for posting this one up! I am LOVING this song! Ugh, when is Battle Studies coming out?! I'm dying! haha. Been spending too much money to go to every show, appearance and what not he's been in for the past two years in LA! My wallet hurts.
This is actually the kind of sound i was hoping he'd go for in his next album. Keep that soulful vibe he had in continuum, but still with a pop sensibility.
I vote this one to be on the new album! Anyone else?
I agree, but he's working on an album right now. Battle Studies, there is no release date as of yet. I would expect it to debut in the Fall of 09?? Just a guess.
I have to agree, he's played with Clapton, Buddy Guy, Double Trouble. He crafts some of the most intricate music available. I would say he is a living legend albeit a relatively obscure legend outside of his fanbase. Mayer will continue to do great things with music!
This is one of those unreleased gems from along the path of JM's career. If you search long enough, his whole career is littered with them, and most of the unreleased stuff is better than 90% of what makes it onto other people's albums.
