  • I love this song. The breakdown at the end, and when he kind of hums/scats a melody around 4: 28 is my favorite part. This is the John Mayer I love. Sucker. No Such Thing (acoustic version from Inside Wants Out, Room For Squares version was awful in comparison), Why Georgia, St. Patrick's Day.. incredible music. The only song after that that felt like old John, to me, was Daughters. I wish he'd go back to his roots and play music like this. It was beautiful.

  • reminds me "neon", great song.

    shame it wasnt released

  • This song is baller as fuck.

  • @surfer1211 legit assessment

  • @wiseoldfish it was meant to be out at the end of October but got delayed. ive heard it's out some time next year :/

  • @marron93 Yepp, He got that Granuloma on his Pharynx, or was it his Larynx? It was either his throat or his actual Voice Box, which would be Larynx. All "ynx's" aside, it sucks huge Scrotum that hes MIA right now. I was so hyped to have the album come out in October; I saw him & Keith Urban at the Tiger Jam in April & that ruled so I was so excited! Now I'm just bummed that he's on IR haha; but I could totally hear the development of it, really sad. Oh well, Born & Raised will be all the better!

  • Now this is the John I know and love... Does anybody know when his new album is going to come out?

  • First time I've ever heard this song. I've gotta say... it's beautiful!

  • great songwriter...

  • CHRIS!

  • A lot of John's acoustic songs are surely influenced by brazilian bossa nova guitar style! And this is nice!

  • @lucascopin No he just really really really likes Charlie Hunter.

  • @dougsusername really? Never heard him, maybe I shoul check it out

  • theirs so many amazingly written unreleased Mayer songs that need to be compiled and released in an album. Most of John's unknown songs would be greatest hits for most singer/ songwriters today. He has set the bar for talent, versatility, and most importantly, the drive & work ethic to keep valuable music coming for his loyal fans. Their wont be another like him.. Anyway, Thats just what I think.

  • omg the solo after 3:26.. :O

  • @MrShiningbubblegum You should listen to Bossa Nova then... One kind of Brazilian music...

  • and isn't it a shame that the people in the background don't shut the He ll up!!!! lol :)

  • first song he ever wrote (well co-wrote)

  • Damn...he was so NICEEEEEEEEEEEE!

He need to release this stuff.

  • i love this song. one of my all-time favorites. (which, of course, means i never get to hear him play it live). so thank you, thank you, thank you.

  • When was this recorded? Does anyone know for sure?

  • Its just so frustrating to know that this guy actually composed and played this song live in bars when he was what? 20? 21? And remember that this is just a random recording at some random bar,, he can play like this anywhere, anytime and even back then 100% perfection.

  • @Ccbroo true

  • Better than anything on Battle Studies.

  • To all the people arguing, type it into google, hes admitted to using autotune on albums several times, he does live sometimes to, though he never used to, on where the light is theres a point where he starts laughing cause the autotune is ridiculous. Just because you use autotune on an album doesnt mean you cant sing it, just means you want it perfect for the album, most people cant tell live anyway

  • His could release an entire cd of unreleased shit and it'd be ten times better than anything out there right now. except maybe his own released stuff.

  • @rutherfordmusic It would be 10x better than any of his albums. All his songs he wrote before he was famous are greater than anything he's capable of writing now.

  • @dizasterousn agreed bro

  • @missprissm. He says "can I have a little less vocal in the monitor, I can tell already" telling the sound guy to lower the volume of his vocal mic so he can hear the guitar better

  • What did he say between 0:16-0:20?

  • @missprissm a little less vocal in the monitor... i can tell all ready ( i believe)

  • WTF? john, you rock!

  • CAZUZA might have influenced him.

  • this music is so brazillian.. like djavan for example.

  • thanks so much for posting! had this track forever ago, hard to find again

  • id love it if he wrote songs like this now

  • I love listening to his Eddie's Attic music, some of his best work I think (:

  • @nIcholleohh 100% agreed!

  • @nIcholleohh do you have any more of his music from the Eddie's Attic period?

  • @1979saxman go to tryjm.com there's full shows from 1999 and 2000. awesome stuff.

  • How could you even carry on "small talk" during this genius... These people didn't understand what they were eating their steak to.

  • @davidach so true lol!

Saw Mayer live and I may have well been listening to a recording of 14 year old girls screaming for 2 hours! Bless them for their love of his music but I did wish they would shut up and just enjoy some real music!

Girls--you're not going to marry John!

  • This is what cough my attention to listen to him

  • what kind of martin is he using?

  • @jgl2222 I think I read somewhere that he had a Martin Eric CLapton signature when he was really young. I could be wrong though.

  • Verryy Jazzyy. I love it! :)

  • Does anymore know how to get these song on audio so you can put them on an ipod????? please..lol

  • @dirtmcgirt1985 Copy this URL, go to zamzar.com, paste the URL and select convert to mp3.

  • John - Release this song!!

  • mp3iffy works again wooohoooo awesome - google mp3iffy

  • alot of artists have songs that are unreleased. alot of those songs turn out to be just as good if not better than the hits. i'm just glad that we have an avenue to hear such well kept secrets. there's no denying john is one of the greats who will outlive his years through his music.

  • great intro, great tune! go john!

  • Till this day one of my fav john mayer songs

  • Hey is it possible that you could send me your audio file? I'm looking EVERYWHERE and I can't find it.

  • "youtube to mp3" <- google it

  • doesn't work jackass.

  • well it does. the site doesn't work, failing that just download dvdvideosoft youtube to mp3 converter... that works. jackass!

  • The phrasing in the chorus is similar to "The Hurt"

  • hey girls in the background. shut the hell up? im trying to enjoy some real music. you know.. the kind people make with real instruments, not autotune.

  • @davidach lol nice!

  • @davidach JM uses Autotune.

  • @eWilliamCardenas how could you say he uses autotune when, he sounds the same singing into a video camera, autotune is an effect procesor to correct pitch, check out some vids where he is singing with out a microphone and it will sound the same. no autotune

  • @kylegarrettmusic I listen John Mayer every day , i just said he is using it on albums m8 but who cares? He voice is great :)

  • @kylegarrettmusic he actually has admitted to using pitch correction on albums

  • @kylegarrettmusic what he means is stuff like, on the record, he'll use autotune for stuff like making his voice not clash with the frequencies of a snare drum etc. issues in that manner.

  • @davidach I want to marry this comment!

  • @davidach Hate to bust your balls, john mayer does use auto tune >.< not to the extent of tpain*ful to listen to*

  • @ehhyoBillbO in the studio all artist use autotune for a better sounding record but not live

  • why isnt this song on one of his albums....

  • omg litterally my idol. him and andrew mcmahon<33

  • omg, mine too!! :D i love them both! :D

  • omggg. I wanna marry him! Wait no. I don't wanna marry John Mayer. I wanna marry his music! If only that were humanly possible T_T

  • I would marry both him and his music. I wouldn't doubt for a second:) The greatest musician alive! <3

  • haha. agreed! I'm so glad that someone who has REAL talent is so popular =] I never get tired of him

  • scary? lol =p

  • i like him

  • Anyone know where I can find the MP3 download for this song?!?

  • He's playing at Eddie's Attic in Atlanta. Before he was really famous. I wish he'd make an album just of his Eddie's Attic songs, they were a completely different but wonderful sound.

  • His previous partner for Inside Wants OUT and some of Room For Squares (Clay Cook) who helped write "neon" and other songs covers a full album on his birthday there every year

  • @mayerfan93 Agreed, not to mention that Eddie's was one o my old haunts back then. There, Joe's Place, and Smith's Ol Bar up in Buckhead...=-) I really miss those days terribly, back when life made sense and everyday wasnt a struggle just to stay calm, cool, and collected. Gettin older sux, lol

  • @mayerfan93 ohmygosh I totally agree with that. stupid unreleased songs. they should all be out so mayer fans can have them.

  • @mayerfan93 That was when he really was the greatest!

  • @mayerfan93 This is probably not at eddies attic, I have been there numerous time and peple dont talk during performances. Its the house rules.

  • where's he playin, a coffee house? give the man some respect!

  • crazy how many people aren't paying attention

  • On balance it's probably better than the incessant screaming that he receives at his concerts today (good job monitoring systems are so good now, or else he could have gone the way of The Beatles!).

  • thanks for posting this one up! I am LOVING this song! Ugh, when is Battle Studies coming out?! I'm dying! haha. Been spending too much money to go to every show, appearance and what not he's been in for the past two years in LA! My wallet hurts.

  • oh btw, seems like this is an unreleased song from 1999.... :)

  • Love this guys hands. They work magic

  • This is actually the kind of sound i was hoping he'd go for in his next album. Keep that soulful vibe he had in continuum, but still with a pop sensibility.

I vote this one to be on the new album! Anyone else?

  • I'd definitely vote for it - but I wouldn't bet on it. It's an older song of his. Back during his Eddie's Attic days...

One of my favorites ever though

  • i think it is a cutaway acoustic that give the song its unique sound

  • wow it's really good, i think I had never heard this before.

  • I hate how he has so many songs like this that are good and are not on his albums. And I can't listen to them on my ipod :(

  • yes you can, just download the audio from this video...how?...just google it!

  • I wish he'd get out of the media and concentrate on churning out more music. I mean, it's his life, but an album would balance things out, I think.

  • I agree, but he's working on an album right now. Battle Studies, there is no release date as of yet. I would expect it to debut in the Fall of 09?? Just a guess.

  • love it!

    Thanks for sharing!

  • i said it once i'll say it again.john mayer rocks and there is no other artist that compares to this soon to be legend!

  • Its no longer soon to be, his popularity is large enough to safely state him being a current legend.

  • I have to agree, he's played with Clapton, Buddy Guy, Double Trouble. He crafts some of the most intricate music available. I would say he is a living legend albeit a relatively obscure legend outside of his fanbase. Mayer will continue to do great things with music!

  • i really love this song of john;)

  • what a great song!

i agree with kujofox... it's very jazz influenced!

  • God, I used to listen to this song all the time.

Haven't heard it in like three years.

One of the hardest on guitar, out of Mayer's songs... at least for a 'strummer' like myself.

  • yes crazy chords

  • woW!!!.. where in the worrrld and hOW do you even find something like this?!!? this is amazing

  • man I've never heard this but I think this easily one of his best. very jazz influenced. love it.

  • This is one of those unreleased gems from along the path of JM's career. If you search long enough, his whole career is littered with them, and most of the unreleased stuff is better than 90% of what makes it onto other people's albums.

    Yeah, he's just that good.

  • Never heard this before. What a beautiful song! But everything JM writes is beautiful, n'est-ce pas? Thanks for sharing this StopThisTrain!

  • Such a good song. At the berklee workshop, he pulled this song out to show how he had to write his acoustic songs with a moving bass line. So creative. Very Charlie Hunter'ish look on guitar playing.

  • Do you have a video of this?

  • Please explain in detail....
