I thought the NASA pic of earth was off too. Pennsylvania sit at 39N to 45N latitude, but according to that NASA pic it looks more like 60N based on the curvature of the planet. Firstly, I have seen the moon here in UK on 26 Jan 2012. It went down in the west. it had a glowing quarter to it. don't know if it's the moon or not.
