  • According to a thread posted on MetaFilter, the large square cement "thing" used to be stairs leading down into two rooms, one for Mr. Smith, and one for Mrs. Smith. It is now capped.

    I read in a book that he allegedly had a bell buried with him just in case.

  • He did, bells were often used for the dead, hence the term " dead ringer" ha ha, look it up!

  • What makes you think he was afraid of being buried alive? Go to Route 2 in Richmond and see the marker honoring a wife. You can't miss it!

  • Seems Mr. Smith had a bit of a phobia about being buried alive, so he arranged to be buried with his face beneath a six foot tube that led up to plate glass window. He also had a bell in his hand so he could ring to let people know that he was alive.

  • In 1893, Tim died in Middlebury, Vermont on Halloween ironically enough. His body was interred at the Evergreen Cemetery in New Haven, VT. in a specially prepared grave.
