  • Poor Calaf! Thinking how to solve the three riddles of Empress Turandot, yet he fell in love with her.

  • Como Plácido, nadie.

  • @sugarbist, 'I also try to share information...', only that? ahahaha! I don't think so!. 'Corelli did not campaing to lower the universal pitch', logical, in 1992 it wasn't important for him, he didn't sing then. Verdi himself had protested along Domingo and others, in favor of natural tunnig A 432. Many important voices have been ruined by early modern intonation.

  • Take PD acting and combine it with LP voice. An outstanding performance not 2 b matched.

  • Por mucho que me guste la grabación de la Deutche, con un Francisco Araiza increíble, a este hombre nunca le fue bien este papel.

  • This seems to be another squeezed strained performance by Domingo, who is not really suited for this role

  • @sugarbist Another??? This is not very good I admit, but take a listen to the Dorma I posted from 1975...a different story. I think that he did not have the "goods" to sing Calaf in 1987, although the performance overall is still very good.

  • @vivadomingo1 I listened to your 1975 posting&it does sound pretty good.I also have a tape of PD doing Nessun Dorma with many other tenors singing the same aria.Although Domingo sounds good, most of the other tenors overshadow him. Corelli,Volpi, Fillipeschi, Martinelli,Del Monaco,Merli,Wunderlich,Early Pavarotti, Di Stefano& Bjorling to name a few.One of my issues with PD is that after a role has past him by,he will sing it anyway& sometimes resort to transposing beyond acceptable practices.

  • @sugarbist - you changed the argument...we were not debating if he sings it the best. You said another strangulated high note for Domingo, and I was simply showing you that he sang many nice high notes as well, and you generalization was not fair. I was not comparing him to other tenors. I agree about the transpositions and that he sang too long. I have posted many live performances of Domingo and all are great - even ones from the operas you mention above!

  • @vivadomingo1 There is no doubt that PD did sing very well early on in his career.I remember a Trovatore I heard on the radio in the mid 1970s which I thought was wonderful.Although anything above an A flat was an adventure,he was able to manage his high notes& sing rather well. But,Why do a Turandot after the role has passed him bye&crack on the Cs.Although singing is not all about hi-notes there are many performances onYT that did become compromised because he had trouble with the tessitura

  • @vivadomingo1Yes I agree the argument was not about who sings it the best, but I also try to share information and I'm trying to make a point. For me Domingo does have too many performances where he is less consistant. He also has over 130 roles he has sung. Quite an achievement, But, where are the signature roles?Singing is not just about high notes & not just about number of roles as appose to quality of the performances.

  • @vivadomingo1 Domingo has transposed Chella Mi Creda a half tone in concert with a mic.He has sung Di Quella Pira without ahi-note.DiQuella Pira with the hi notes being B flats instead of the accepted half tone transposing of B nat. from Hi Cs.Although having an extremely good quality of voice,I do feel that his musicianship also sufferred when he sang roles he wasn't suited for Trovatore, Chenier, Pagliacci,Aida,Cavaleria,Manon&Otello.Yes,PD did have some success early on in some of these roles

  • @sugarbist - Corelli transposed the Chella as well, I have it on cd. I have never heard Domingo sing the Pira with a B flat, but maybe he did...so what? Bjoerling did as well, and that man had a wonderful high C. I would say Domingo sang for too long, but in his prime sang all the roles you mention above quite wonderfully.

  • @vivadomingo1 Corelli unlike Domingo was never notorious for transposing.Corelli unlike Domingo did not campaign to lower the universal pitch, circa 1990.It's wonderful that you are a fan of Domingo & enjoy him so much.I unfortunately do not enjoy most of his singing&don't understand why he is rated as a world class tenor&one of the best of all time.

  • @sugarbist Quite honestly, you are entitled to your opinion, but it is one not shared. Domingo currently holds the record for most different operatic roles performed at something like 129? He has incredible versatility, and he is well loved by opera patrons all over the world. That is why he is rated a world class tenor - Because the world rates him one. I agree that Corelli has a better rendition of this aria, but that doesn't lessen Domingo.

  • @Vivaldicellist I realize that my opinion is not shared by most, but if you read some of my comments on this page,it should give anyone some food for thought.YesPD has sung over130different operas,However he does not have even 3 signature roles.Having incredible versatility is not just the number of roles you sing but in the matter that you perform those operas.Lauri Volpi,Fillipeschi,&Merli had great versatility, singing anything from Favorita to WilliamTell in pitch without notorius transposing.

  • @Vivaldicellist Continued,Yes, people all over the world do love Domingo,&if they enjoy him that much they should. He is a fine actor.interpreter of roles,& has a very good quality of voice. However his voice has been overmatched by the roles he has taked on,espescially in Turandot. He has cracked many times in different performances in the question&answer aria, and other operas as well. Do youthink this is a mark of a world class tenor?Other operas I do not think he was suited for were Pagliacci,

  • @Vivaldicellist cont'Forza,Aida,Ernani,Chenier&Trovatore. But,i did hear PD do a wonderfulTrovatore early 70s.I did not compare Corelli specificallyto PD,that would be unfair.I just listed a number of tenors I thought did the aria better and I left out Daniele Barioni,Antonio Cortis. Two absolutely beautiful voices.Thank You. Enjoy

  • @bodiloto Other than Fleta, who had a short but wonderful career, there were other tenors like Barioni,Campagnano,Cortis,Wunderlich,Masini,De Muro,Merli.Aragall,Pertile,Penno,Volpe Fillipeschi,Corelli,Del Monaco,Gigli,Vinay,Di Stefano, limarilli,Lamberti,&Richard Tucker whom were far superior than the MEDIOCRE Domingo, who has the public "Ingannati"ma io e Lei non siamo ingannati

  • @sugarbist giusto,hai ragione!

  • @bodiloto Grazie e buon divertimento

  • @sugarbist buon divertimento anche à te caro!

    E buona notte!

  • ME encanta esta representacion del Met. La veo de cuando en cuando y siempre me disfruto.

  • Oh, Calaf :)

  • Increible !!!!!!!! un genio, hace vibrar el alma.

  • preciosa ,

  • i was born in the wrong generation because i would never get to see him live :(

  • @ferrarixxz .....Placido still preforms...I will be attending a concert in two days..he will preform with Katherine Jenkins..sure am looking forward to this!

  • @sandicatt where? could you give me a link or something like that?

  • @ferrarixxz ..The concert was in Sydney Australia..Placido was in excellent voice each Aria greeted with thunderous applause..he sang 'E lucevan le stelle' with great emotion, revellling it was 50years to the day since he first sang Tosca. There will be no recording of the concert, much to my dismay. Katherine was stunning as usual, a great duo.I hope I have shared with you just a little of the magic of this wonderful evening.

  • Wow thanks for the post. I have never heard the true version. I have had this on DVD, CD, and Video. They all had a dubbed in version at the end. But I don't care. I love the way Placido sings the whole song, the ending is just a bonus.

  • Although Domingo goes a bit hoarse at the end, I would much rather see this than the dubbed version put out on DVD! Thanks for the post.
