makes u think aye like people today have claimed to see extinct animals again like in nz there some land haven't been explored yet. there a cave they been at it for 50 years haven't been to end of it yet or found out where its water source is coming from makes u think what the earth is hiding from us or what there could be like hidden land etc
What does one do to get onto an exploration dive team such as this (or any other type of exploration team). I'm in my sophomore year in HS and maybe making Scuba Master in two years. Such as what schools, programs, etc.
To see it first hand, for one of many reasons a person such as yourself would never understand... And thats OK, just try and refrain from commenting on things you don't understand nor will ever try to.
Get a decent wired or wireless robot with a nuclear battery (believe it or not such things do exist), sit comfortably and safely in your RV outside, and in several days of continues diving by the robot controlled remotely you will have the map of the whole cave system. The map will be drawn on the go by software, military style. Who would want to go into this nightmare personally and risk precious life? Certainly not a person who understands what risk management is all about.
@Sun4Niebieskieoczy why go there? Because that's what makes us human. Human life is not precious, there are now over 7 000 000 000 of us; we are not an endangered species. Exploration and pushing the limits makes our unimportant existence more fulfilling
We know where the water comes from. It has been traced from it has been traced from the Ellis and Horseshoe Basins including the Grange Slocker 6.4km away.
It is interesting that when maps of this dive are published these days what they leave out. I have the original of the map drawn up during the 1995 expedition and the survey data. The Pearce receives water from the Ellis Sysytem, Nettlebed, HH, Windrift, Stormy Pot, and Big Friendly Giant. The question is: how much comes from Nettlebed.
Got a chip on your shoulder? Its not about showing off, its about pushing yourself further. And yes, white people pretty much discovered everything, learned everything and brought knowledge to the world, and still do. Thats because they enjoy a challenge.
@highdensity469 Didn't stop to think the do it for the thrill? Why did we people volunteer to go into space if we could have just sent a computer. When these divers dont want to do it anymore, there will be plenty of others ready and waiting to take the plunge into the deep.
@highdensity469 it tough it hard its evreything for some people my dad is a cave diver (one of two in new zeland activly diving) and its just like extreem sports you do because you are there to test the limts
A remote operated vehicle (ROV) on a tether is a possibility but the sort you would need (like the little bots they used on the Titanic) would be too pricey for us.
BTW I was involved with the filming of Sanctum...this is much less scary!!!
the water is incredibly clear, bloody cold and slow flowing. The passages are quite wide so getting stuck is not an issue in this site. There is minimal silt in the cave due to the flow and regular flooding.
- it is probably 5-6km to the source so we have a LONG way to go. Hopefully will have more info after next years expedition.
- the bug should have been an AMPHIPOD...not an arthropod. Lots of interesting critters in there we are studying.
Hi all, I was one of the divers in the film and I took the video. To asnwer a few questions:
- you go there for the adventure and to see what is around the next corner. It is pretty cool to lay eyes on somewhere that you know nobody has ever seen before.
- we do use electric scooters for all the deep diving beyond about 125m. This conserves energy and reduces the chances of dangerous CO2 buildup.
-we don't have the budget for submarines, and you are right it is more fun to see it yourself.
DoubleThom, yes they are breathing the correct gas for the depth. However, they are using rebreathers, which is a closed loop. If they overexrt themselves, they will breath harder, therefore exhaling more CO2 into the loop. Too much CO2 cannot be handled by the scrubber in the unit and they end up breathing CO2 back into themselves
I don't get the part with carbon dioxide poisoning. I assume they dive with scuba tanks filled with the most suitable type of gas for these conditions - no matter what type we're talking about, it's not like they fill tanks with CO2. Divers inhale from the scuba tank and exhale to the water afaik ? What am I missing ?
Watch 'SANCTUM' and you'll see a real story. Cave diving can be really astonishing and beautiful, and you can find a thrill in that, but it can also be dangerous as those National Geographic people say.
My Farther (a kiwi caver) is a cave diver and saw one off his good friends die in this cave, i have upmost respect for these people who have pushed it to these depths and thank you national geographic funding it us New Zealand caver cannot afford some of the gear without funding (I cave as well)
@highdensity469 Movements as complicated as these cannot be performed by robots. No robot to date is able to mimic to complexity of the movements of our hands.
The reason they don't bring a propeller system into the cave is because there is a lot of debris and silt at the bottom. they have to move very carefully. I do some cave diving and know how dangerous it is. When silt gets kicked up from the bottom it clouds the water, causing the diver to become very disoriented and makes it incredibly easy to get lost and lose track of where you are. the takes a long time to settle will cause death if the diver's tank runs out of air while in the cave.
why didn't they bring a underwater propellor system to get them further into the cave? I understand there might be some crevices that it might not fit through, but if they really wanted to know where the source came from, then that's what they should be using. either that or a robot.
Hey nationalgeographic, if you are reading this, can you please make all of your videos available in ALL countries? Im in England but i cant watch some of the videos :(
@TheHadesShade Oh no. I know National Geographic isn't stupid enough to destroy the rivers with dye (Afterall they do their utmost to protect the environment) I'm just saying that the colours of the river was ruined when they poured it. As in the very instant they did.
I wonder why they don't use those little underwater jet things like they used in the first National Treasure movie and stuff. It would save time and energy.
@MrEllisRedding One reason is because if you aim one of those scooters the wrong way, it can produce alot of silt and then you have no visibility and cannot see anything. They have been used in caves before but they probably had a good reason for not using them. Wasn't there so I can't say for sure.
Wait.....if they are in there for hours, how do they go to the bathroom? You can go before but still. It is an amazing thing on what they are adventuring though.
Umm... How did they get enough oxygen to stay deep in the water with only a few tanks?.. and besides, the pressure of the water deep down there is increasing
I went cave diving once in Mexico (the water was a balmy 70 degrees Fahrenheit and we only went to about 70 feet in depth (a standard dive). It was THE BEST diving EVER. The water is crystal clear and it's beautiful. Go to my Youtube profile and my background is a picture my dad took.
lol "wait for dissolved gases to be safely released from their bodies" - i know its not what you think it is, but i was i instantly thinking, damn that must be one smelly little bubble

There is an error at 4:03. Narrator meant "...possible new species of ARTHROPOD", not anthropod (sic). An arthropod is an invertebrate animal with an exoskeleton - our canditate creature. Finally, anthropoid means having characteristics of a man or ape.
I think the source for that was was my toilet because I'm sure I saw one of my turds in there :p
In all seriousness - how could the source be that hard to find? If it's not above ground then it would have to be naturally desalinated through the ground from the ocean right?
Oh man I would die if I was in that cave...I cannot take small spaces let alone being underwater XD I would just panic...watching this gave me the chills :/
@bsol07 A simple suction engine or turbine can turn the flow of the river into a propellant. Add in a little bit of electrical power and the thing will breeze through the water no problem.
@DJMight Or why don't they get those things that you hang on to, and it has a motor with a propeler. At least I think they have those out there, I'm sure Navy seals have 'em.
@rebelnomo that's to get you around faster under water. Not for cave use unless it's a massive cave or you'll get it stuck down there and or break it.
@DJMight because that's not diving. They've sent one of those down to the deepest point on earth, no point setting a record with it in a cave, plus they could lose connection using wireless cause of the cave structure. They can't do it by wire because the length could not be long enough, it could get caught, snap, and the length of it would determine the weight which would cause it to use more power to pull it all. So people are better for this, they can fit easier.
I dont get it, what source are they looking for?

Why not send a remote controlled mini submarine?
DJMight 10 months ago 216
@DJMight my guess it would be too hard to navigate especially considering it must go against the flow
bsol07 10 months ago
@bsol07 That was my guess too.
nothing980454 10 months ago
@bsol07 A simple suction engine or turbine can turn the flow of the river into a propellant. Add in a little bit of electrical power and the thing will breeze through the water no problem.
bio2020 10 months ago
@DJMight Then how are you supposed to go where no man has gone before? : /
knigthfigth 10 months ago
@DJMight Or why don't they get those things that you hang on to, and it has a motor with a propeler. At least I think they have those out there, I'm sure Navy seals have 'em.
rebelnomo 10 months ago
@rebelnomo its in a cave. there is a lot of difference from diving in the ocean.
dclipe 10 months ago
@dclipe Yea, I was just thinking that they might be able to save energy using it, but probably not much room to maneuver.
rebelnomo 10 months ago
@rebelnomo that's to get you around faster under water. Not for cave use unless it's a massive cave or you'll get it stuck down there and or break it.

@DJMight
i guess its too deep for the signal. and on top of that, it is a cave.
rickiex 10 months ago
@DJMight I'm not sure if the remote control sub could receive a signal from that far underground,
Jellochevy 10 months ago 2
@DJMight money to build mini sub? also if you invest in it and it fails?
anamurillo28 10 months ago
@DJMight the long range maybe.
fackyoudude 10 months ago
@DJMight because that's not diving. They've sent one of those down to the deepest point on earth, no point setting a record with it in a cave, plus they could lose connection using wireless cause of the cave structure. They can't do it by wire because the length could not be long enough, it could get caught, snap, and the length of it would determine the weight which would cause it to use more power to pull it all. So people are better for this, they can fit easier.
tbsdrummer87 10 months ago
@tbsdrummer87 those are good points you made but they could have used access points for signals

@DJMight lol problem solved
