i have a quick question. i have just started making my bjd in paper clay and i was wondering how do you cut the eye sockets out? i mean once its dry do you cut it out or do you wet it down again. i was just wondering
@oXtatsukoXo very carefully with an exacto blade after it's dry. If you need to dig into it you can use a speedball lino cutter. Be super, super careful. it's the easiest time to ruin the head or cut yourself.
I saw your dolls while browsing Etsy yesterday and realized you're the same person who made this video. Thank you so much for taking the time to show us your process : D It's been very helpful to me in making my first 'serious' figurine (not a bjd.) I expected such a talented, experienced dollmaker to be serious, but I love your comments/dialouge. ("Trying not to get my boobs in the shot...") haha. Keep doing what you're doing : D
This may sound like a silly question but, is casting required if you want you to put your doll in color? I mean will it be difficult, just to put color on your clay model? Casting sounds dangerous, and I'm clumsy. And my parents won't let me. I can scult well but casting I'm not sure about. Can I just skip that step and begin coloring it? If so how would I? I'm on a tight budget, so I can only buy clay, and my older sister has plent of supplies for faceups and etc.
@xXBloodySacrificesXx A paperclay doll is pretty delicate. if you're not going to cast I'd suggest sculpting in Super Sculpey or Apoxy sculpt. They still will be delicate but they will be less so than the paperclay. You don't HAVE to cast, but it will last longer and be much more durable. You can paint the super sculpey but it may flake off. Use some acetone on the cured super sculpey to take off the film that it gets from baking and the paint should adhere a bit better. good luck!
Thank you for videos. Which product you are using for making molds and which resin type you are using for casting. Will you make new videos for casting the doll.
@svjetlanaturk If I get to the point where i'm casting, I'll try. It's hard to get videos like that because it takes both hands and a lot of concentration on my part! If I run out of batteries or memory on the card... there goes the video. XD I use smooth on Mold Max 30 for my good molds(Pink) and Oomoo for my junk molds(Blue). I prefer to cast in Alumilite but i've also used polytek and smooth on smoothcast. :3
Do you make the molds out of silicone? If so, how much would it cost for enough silicone for a 43cm doll? I heard it's expensive, but I'm not sure.....
@alliemattable i do use silicone. It takes about 1.5 gallons to make the molds for a 14 inch 43cm doll. The silicone costs $115 I think? The Oomoo is actually a little cheaper because you get two gallons of silicone for $150. the downside is Oomoo is very low strength and will rip and warp after about twenty castings.

Me and a friend of mine have been trying to get into making BJDs, but it's been hard tracking down videos on how to actually MAKE them, so this is helping a lot!
i made a bjd doll out of sculpey. i thought it would be easier than paper clay cause i could bake it and make it real tough.... long sotry short.. i wish i did her in paperclay :/
shes cute tho!
and nice video, need more of these things our there
hmm... so paper clays need to go on oven... how about air drying clays and such?
sorry -_- i'm still learning to do so... i'm having a hard time making those especially when i have to hide it from my art hating father... and better hide the art materials and traces of sculpting...
sometimes i never had time so my bjd is always "in progress" =(
Does the paper clay fully harden? would it be good to make a permanent doll from it or do you just make this doll to create a mold from?
MiiilkyChan 1 week ago
@MiiilkyChan it fully hardens but it's a delicate material. you have to be very gentle with things made from it.

Hey i know there's people asking the same quesiton, but yeah, what kind of clay is that? it certainly doesnt look like paperclay...?
hematitecrow 3 months ago
@hematitecrow It's paperclay, just regular creative paperclay. :3 If it looks a little funny it's because it's acquired some dirt from my work space.
