Kudos to the 16s...it's so good to know this awesomest of bands are as fresh to you now as they were to us old geezers back then....I still get goose bumps...and my GF of 30 yrs still gets off when I sing to her...gets off to her mothers that is...:)

  • I sang this song to my girlfriend once when we were bored.

Me: As the day stops dead, at the place where we're lost

Gf: Oh, I love when you sing to me!

Me: I will drug you and fuck you, on the permafrost

    Gf: WHAT

    Good times.

  • and yes indeed, it would be a amazing Karaoke song! I once did a Karaoke of Type O Negatives "Everything Dies" at a bar and people were standing there looking at me with the look of WTF is he singing? GOOD TIMES!

  • now that is what a call a song - yes, karaoke choice number 1, just give me the microphone and watch their jaws drop, still I bet a few would dance

  • j'adorais Magazine, toujours autant de force!!!!

  • Go Bazza! Still one of my fave bassists.

  • they maintained their looks for quite a long time but i think howard devoto finally ditched his diets

  • @mediattackrecords do you not think he still does little more than eat, three square meals a day?

  • Geoff was here

  • Incredible musicality.

  • They are geniuses and stuff.

  • One of the few bands that really cared about the foundation of music: sound!

  • Sends shivers down my spine ...

  • First hearing of this song, performed live on local Manchester news show Granada Reports around the release of second hand daylight....dont think anyone noticed the lyrics, still Tony Wilson was one of the presenters ! Only time I saw Mags was the Ritz ballroom Manchester 78 supported by JCC and the Nosebleeds with new singer Stephen Morressey..Oh to be young again !

  • Muy Buenos

  • when listening to magazine, i believe magic somehow is possible.

  • OMG this is just so heavy. I love this song.

  • Wow this is brilliant! <3

  • Asian girls online # lushfmlk.info #

  • Thunder shook loose hail on the outhouse again today I bumped into you again I have no idea what you want but there was something I meant to say As the day stops dead at the place where we're lost I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost There's not much that I miss I'm far too forgetful for that sugar's sweet some of the time it's hard to keep some things in mind
  • Make your order now # lushfmlk.info #

  • They are a bit like Brian Eno on steroids.

Loved 'em then and love 'em now.

It's no coincidence that I also love Radiohead and the Manic Street Preachers who love love 'em to bits.

  • I will drug you and fuck you... on a permafrost...

  • what the fuck did i stumble across. lmao.

  • Awesome bad ... perhaps not ahead of their time, but a very different band anyway.

This is a great live performance, better than I thought it could be.

    Thanks to the poster. :)

  • It's definitely a flanger. You can get the same sound with an Electro Harmonix deLuxe Electric Mistress with valve amp overdrive.

  • Love this song!

    :)

  • What fx pedal does the guitarist use, does anyone know?

    What an amazing band!

  • @vamtim

I believe he uses the same set up as McGeoch, which is an MXR Flanger and a Compression pedal with a Marshall combo.

  • @XellKamikaze

Thanks for your help, it's a little too old to have a polychorus on it but that's what I originally thought it was.

  • Saw these guys in SF in 1979 or early 80. Old Waldorf(?)

    Truly an amazing performance.

And the recordings are still as fresh and raw in 2010, particularly live album.

  • I disagree about Robin Simon. There is no substitute for John McGeoch. Although Robin Simon did play on Systems of Romance which is a great album.

  • @chinakitty1

For Robin Simon to step into McGeoch's role... well... I don't envy him. But he manages a more than diligent job. Great Stuff!

  • there is film version of this where the light is like a normal video. Like daylight man.

  • I could go for a little d'ing and f'ing on the permafrost right now.... "It's so hot in here/What are they trying to hatch?" (Magazine - "Parade")

  • Cool song - Robin Simon is brill saw him playing with John Foxx gig at roundhouse gig - amazing guitarist!!!!!!!

  • Good blokes trying their best it seems to me, even way back then, in thatcher and her follower times.

  • Robin REALLY shines here.

  • Howard Devoto hit the highs and the lows as he sang this melodies.

  • "I will drug you and fuck you..." beautiful!!

  • This song is really amazing **)

  • Excellent replacement for McGeoch. That's the ex guitarist from Ultravox isn't it? I like his take on the solo at the end. Very nice.

  • yeah Robin Simon, realy good guitarist too.

  • any guitarists out there know the chords for the choruses?

  • This has got real class. Thanks for sharing :)

  • as near as damn it to perfection.

  • Absolute Genius!!

  • great song it really kicks me when the shit gets all twisted

  • Accidently run into their Real Life album in 1978. That was and is a real masterpiece.

Bought Secondhand Daylight blindly as well a year later and without any regrets. Also bought their later albums, but these two are my favorites.

  • superb, not heard that since 1990'ish - hazy alcohol and drug-induced days, unsurprising with the intellectual input - magazine, joy division, bowie, SPK, nocturnal emissions etc

  • jesus,I havent heard that song for ages ,it lost nothing of its power ,truth and force...

  • i will drug and fuck you in the permafrost

  • I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost..

  • I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost, first!

  • Things are getting sticky in this country again, total dysfunctionallity, with the warped indian empirers wanting to stick their noses in regional Britain politics again.............

Can anyone save us from them plastic generals?

Why do they have to search for funding from overseas-Brits /non-Brits? Baffles me.

  • imagine performing this for karaoke

  • why not?...

  • @ajj4account

I actually have daydreamed about this several times. In all seriousness. I don't think I've come across a Karaoke bar that has this song through... yet.

  • @rollagasper imagine the look of surprise and horror on the audiences faces when you sing this at the Karaoke bar.

  • @ajj4account LOL!

  • @ajj4account

I would sing "I would drug you, and fuck you on the permafrost" in a loud angry voice and point randomly at folks LOL

  • @ajj4account

I would sing "I will drug you, and fuck you on the permafrost" in a loud angry voice and point randomly at folks LOL

  • sensational? This right here is stunning. What an amazing band,

  • why the hell did u2 become famous? i'm at a fucking loss

  • Comment removed

  • @oringetoe

That is a fucking brilliant observation, and the question that millions have pondered for decades.

  • Comment removed

  • @oringetoe I have a theory about that--I think they stole the Clash's audience when that band broke up.

  • @Exilemainstreet Magazine split before the Clash

  • @oringetoe because they're government-sponsored blandness!

  • U2 got famous because when they first started out they had a good image and wrote some catchy pop songs. I quite like their first EP Undr a Blood Red Sky. After that they decided to put their own big heads up their own arses and turned into vain pretentious prats making shit music. Unfortunately the media did a hell of a lot to boost U2's appeal to the masses and us people with brains and good taste just have to tolerate it.

  • @stevede64 two words: Live Aid

  • @stevede64 U2 had been releasing records for around 4 years by te time Under a blood red sky came out.

  • so good, man i wish i were there to see them with JM on guitar( RIP JM )great line up though ....im so tired of this music these monkeys make these days ,no imagination at all these days if im wrong prove me right PLEASE

  • Great song. Great band. Listen to the John Peel sessions where he remixes their tracks, as he was a great fan too

  • Don't think John Peel remixed their tracks, he left it for those themselves. Peel left the artistry to the creators.

  • i love this song. it needs to be heard a few times and then the grip .........

  • I love the air of menace this song radiates :3

  • Yes, it's quite sinister!

  • maybe predicting possible sinister menaces on the horizon, when it was written and performed, thirty years ago......

  • The moment was lost when he was institutionally muffled, since he was a too talented northerner, that noticed too much.

    Books need to be written.

  • Yes they do. Some books will forever remain unread. There is a silence under the stars. We return home soon.

  • The secrets under the carpet eventually creep out, without any help, with the bugs and mites with them.

  • chilling

  • so, you get out much then?

  • I go out alone.

  • Amazing.

  • ELEGANCE

  • If Magazine came to Norway, I'd totally flash at one of their concerts.

  • Hører deg der

  • 'Secondhand Daylight', the best album i ever bought

    Sublime

  • come to America, please

  • Sensational indeed.

  • God Barry Adamson is so sexy!

  • saw them last night. been waiting 30 years to see them. absolutely fantastic. thanks you howard and the boys!! (no back to nature though! :-()

  • Same here mate. Faultless performance imo. Hearing this one,Motorcade and Parade and Shot By Both Sides made my month.

  • Likewise. :)

  • Class!

  • I will be there on the 12th, i hope they play this, im sure they will, cut out shapes is my favorite though.

  • Devoto definately brought it on (PostPunk in its original form)! This music was too ignored back then-shame! I would have loved for this to be the pop music of the time or more music like this anyway...unfortunately we got Michael Jackson:(

  • Hey c'mon michael jackson's first two albums were great, good music. Magazine were brilliant though.

  • I saw their first gig at Rafters (think it was their first) Adamson and McGeoch were stunning for that period, really influential and of course Devoto was years ahead of his contemporaries I think he was waiting for post punk and decided to create it

  • lookin forwrd to forum gig very soon. i want to be drugged and fucked on the permafrost- metaforically, yeah...

  • Strange, disturbing, brilliant.

  • cant wait. am going to see them in london too!

  • Just try and top this!

    Sheer perfection!

  • February 14th in manchester, So excited. One of my all time favourites!!!! Went to see Barry Adamson recently too, he was the shit :D

  • Well, just make sure that you don't get drugged and fucked ....on the permafrost...

  • Definately the most underated band of all time!

  • bloody awesome. fuk christmas im lookin foreward to manchester14th feb. the most underrated band & wordsmith of all time ...bring it on

  • too true travelling from Ireland to see them in London on 12th Feb can't wait

  • one of the best songs ever, a classic...

  • excelent song

one of a kind and im going to hear it live in febuary

  • me tooooo

  • what?!

    where?!

  • the forum, london :) woo

  • lucky dog... :-0

you wouldn't happen to know if they're swinging through the States, do you?

  • Permafrost never ceases to fill me with awe. Who the hell would write "I will drug you and fuck you on the permafrost"?! The bass and synth create the most perfect mood; creepy but serene.

  • What a bass! Mick Karn could have played that bassline. It's like a bit Mick Karn.

  • they both played fretless is perhaps why.

but they are both the same order of amazing.

  • sham64andahalf, you are a star for putting this stuff up!

Can't wait to see 'em in February.

  • I agree.....No US Dates at all..?????? BUMMER!

  • bloody epic

  • wow

  • This is a brilliant piece of music

  • God, how awesome is this song?

  • Pop x Pistols x Division = Magazine

But what a jolly good read.

  • I saw these live in 1978, totally mesmerising

  • i remember this from the city hall in newcastle, a night worth living for

  • their song is unique i think is not how popular you are.I think is more unique this band because a few of us know well what is good music

  • Just another case for me of wishing I was born 20 years earlier than I was. Still I'm glad I've got Magazine in my life regardless of the fact I'll never get to see them perform.

  • @ShouldIBeDamned:

"Just another case for me of wishing I was born 20 years earlier than I was. Still I'm glad I've got Magazine in my life regardless of the fact I'll never get to see them perform."

    Famous last words?

Google for "Magazine reform London Manchester" and you may have to eat them :)

  • Thanks for the tip-off!

  • Previous reply was meant for RiotNrrrdUTube re the concerts - reply facility doesn't seem to work properly half the time.

  • They're reforming for a few dates,

I can't get to any of them.

    Gutted :(

  • eye saw them in texas in the 70s these 2 albums always kicked ass.. for the life of me why di the police make it and this band never did over on this side? o well i will drug u and fuck u

  • Maybe the singer looked too intelligent, maybe the people generally don`t want to be like that.

  • I love this song

  • Thankyou Sham64 1/2.Never seen the video but have loved this song for years.

  • magnifici

  • A fantastic song, from a masterpiece of an album.

  • I'll second that.

It just wasn't quite recognized for what it was back then.

  • Still stands up well after all these years.

I love this song and Magazine

  • OMFG this is punk perfection. Magazine stretched the boundry farther than any. Pere Ubu with insane chops. Sadly another band launched more bands than world tours. FuK. BTW "Play" is one of the greatest live rekerds ever. They were a bit fussy in the studio but so tight and hard on stage.

PS: Luv teh "head" comment. HaHa. That can be considered a couple a ways..

  • Great version of this song. Thanks for posting.

  • I think only us older folk understand. Poor kids!!!!!

  • Heyyy don't go pitying me, man. I'm but a wee larvae and I love Magazine more than life and everything, essentially.

  • whats up with his head ?

  • magazine so subliminal shows how much bands of today really suck, the bands today are just trying too hard,no progression at all

  • Dark....!! What a fantastic performance.

So much talent in this band - very under rated. No reflection on Robin Simon, but it is a shame this classic one isn't with McGeoch though, as there will be no more performances from the late great McGeoch.....

  • Yeah. So sad about McGeoch. Feel fortunate to have seen him perform with Magazine. A master of his craft.

  • very sad about John McGeoch.....48......way too young....Siouxsie favourite banshees

  • As it says on the tin - sensational! Why don't we have bands like these anymore?
