I just bought this laptop.  The laptop makes a chirping noise whenever hard drive is read. The problem is that the noise is louder than other laptops I have had in the past. Is this noise normal for this laptop? I read on some websites that the HDD is bit noisy but not sure if they are talking about spinning noise or disk read noise. Please help.

@TheSuperdhruv Yeah when I got the laptop I noticed the hard drive being loud as well, sent it back thinking it was defective. Got a brand new one, and I get the same noise. It's normal I suppose! Hope this helps

Yeah that is true... but the only thing about the black I don't like (besides the smaller battery) is that it's a fingerprint and dust magnet. So that is why I went with the silver one.

Hard drive only uses power when it's accessing memory (read/write). SSD always uses power, even when the memory isn't being accessed. Of course SSD is much faster, which is why people want them.

And apparently SSD's will evolve and eventually use less power, but not right now.

i heard that generally ssd get better battery life (hp even has a disclaimer saying that they reached their battery estimates using an ssd). are you comparing an ssd to a 5400 rpm hdd? because 5400 rpms do use considerably less power

I could be talking about 5400 rmps. I'm not sure. I just read an article a while back that said SSD's used more power and I was shocked. This notebook has a 5400 Rpm drive and I love it (especially since its 500GB :) )

I think I found the article you were referencing, and I do have some qualms about the benchmarks. They were simply testing the harddrives capability to run for a prolonged period of time, and they do outperform ssds in that department, but when it comes to intense use of the drive the ssd destroys hdd's because the hdd builds up heat which the fan then has to activate to cool it down while for ssd's the fan remains off (besides during start up). But if you need 500gb, hdd is still the way to go

oh and also, it's debatable but i think the ssd is still more efficient because even if the battery dies earlier (which im still not fully convinced of lol) you are performing at much higher speeds (in terms of program boot ups) so therefore you are being more productive with your time (less time wasted waiting). I'm not saying you're wrong or anything though, i'm just encouraging a friendly debate :)

i think my computer (2 year old vaio) is comparable to that one, it also has stamina and speed mode, but to switch u must restart, also screen does small, 13.3 also like 6-7 pounds, a 250gb hardrive? hardrive nad carbon fiber, 2 years old vista has never gone crazy bad, slow at boot up but besides that is awsome, xbrite lcd and led backlight i havent taken of the stickers yet! and its 2 years old! (well the like performance stiker stuff tats were i got most of the info hahaha)
