To all those that thinks this lacks punch in the studio version-- buy the DVD-audio of this CD. It's 5.1 channels of Crowded House remixed for surround sound. You can put your ear up to the center speaker and hear Neil's voice in isolation. Absolutely unbelievable
Agreed -- The studio version lacks the punch with Nick's bass and Paul's heavy base drumming. The engineer and producer could have done the song alot better on the album recording. I don't think Hole in the River fared as badly at the hands of the engineer tough.
They did a great version of this song on Letterman about the same time as this. (Great energy, arrangement, vocals and backing by Paul Schaeffer's band) I'm sure its floating around somewhere. I think I might have it on VHS even!
@ebz92 i agree, this is one amazing song and i don't know why they didn't play it at the concert we saw in Austin in Aug. 2010 (noise police showed up). but of course, they have so much music to play so it may not have been first on their list, even if it was first on the fans'. i wonder still why it wasn't included on their "best of" album or at that "Farewell" tour. this is an incredible song and it gives me chills every time i listen to it. it's like rockabilly '80s style! LOL
best band to ever grace the face of the earth, neil finn is pure musical genious and never got the recognition he so thoroughly deserved, hope they're around for many more years to come
ABC Studios in Melbourne Dec. 14 1986 I think. It was a New Years eve special. The clothes are awesome. I would guess Noel Crombie (Neil's mate from the Enz, and their art director) had a hand in the costumes.
I'm 39. To me, they were "our" Beatles. The best songwriters, the best singers, the best musicians, the best performers live. In 88 I wrote "R.E.M. or Crowded House--one of these bands is the best in the world." I'd take these boys in a heartbeat.
What a rocking lil' tune.

It's fantastic live, but just like Hole In The River it sucks in the studio, some songs have to be live, and this is one among them!

Crowded House seem to be boycotting this song..
1. The didn't play it live on their recent tour
2. It wasn't played at 'Farewell To The World'
3. and it didn't make it to the 'Best Of' album.
strange, because it's an awesome song.

@ebz92 They've played it recently. Apparently they have 80+ songs they're playing on this tour. Obviously, not all in on concert.

A tie is fine. Both great bands. Gotta love the harmony work of Hester with Finn though...just brilliant.

R.E.M. or Crowded House? You drive a hard bargain.
I couldn't decide. Can I declare a tie?

I'm 50 and I think these guys and Neil's songwriting are irreplacable. Great band LIVE. So glad they are back together. Rest in peace Hessie.
