I agree. This is truly THE GREATEST PLAY EVER by the Philadelphia Eagles. Only because it has been since 1960 that they have won a championship. Giants rock. Eagles suck. Amen. Halleluiah.
@firesoup23 By "kick ass" do you mean currently or traditionally, because I hate to break it to you, but they currently suck ass and traditionally haven't done much either compared to teams that do traditionally kick ass (Niners, Steelers, Cowboys, Packers and more).
@commenttard Teams that traditionally kick ass? Here's a reality check. The last Niners Championship was 1994! The last Cowboys one was 1995! And the Packers, before last year, hadn't won one since what, 1996? Yeah, they DID kick ass before all their eras ended. All teams have their rise and decline. The Eagles won 3 Championships between 1948 and 1960! EVERYBODY has their time, their rise and fall.
The Packers went 26 years without a SuperBowl from 1969-1995!
@campaigner111 What a shame that you probably missed their "Glory Years" of 1948-1960 and their next "Glory Years" of 2048- 2098 when they will lose 6 more Super Bowls.
What a terrible description. It's not *just* a Wilbert Montgomery 42 yard TD run. It's a Wilbert Montgomery 42 yard TD run on his first touch of the 1980 NFC title game against the Dallas effing Cowboys. Come on brotha.
please remember that Wilbert was on a training table about 30 minutes prior to kickoff. he was banged up the entire season and chances of him playing were questionable. So, what did he do? He took the first touch he had 42 yards, to the house, against their arch nemisis, at home, in the cold, in the game that decides who plays in the Super Bowl...doesn't get much greater than that...
@gfscarface13 ...and the Cowboys had their heads handed to them last Sunday night, and if you are from Dallas, how'd those Rangers do in the World Series...seem to think they were 1 strike away TWICE and sh!t the bed...at least our 2008 WS ring is still shiny...after 16+ years, those SB rings do get tarnished....
I agree with 1978eagles. Pure athleticism doesn't make a play great. Yes, Jackson's play was amazing, but football is deeper than athleticism. But that is the common misconception made by all these new cats claiming to be Eagles fans.
u know whats funny, that guy who is shown in the begining of the video, #9 pisarcik, he was the qb who fumbled the ball for the giants in the first miracle in the meadowlands.
@kisscactus right, cant be the greatest...i saw a randall cunningham clip where he almost got sacked in his end zone and ducked and did the defender NAAASSSTY!!!then threw the ball like 60 yards downfield to a reciever, prolly was barnett..that play was sick
It IS the greatest Eagles play ever, not because of the design of the play itself, but because of what it meant at the time. Look beyond the surface and set your mind back to 1980. The hatred of the Cowboys. Tom Landry. Decades of mediocrity. The over-achieving Eagles, a team with ZERO bonafide superstars. All you have to do is listen to the crowd. Have you ever heard a louder crowd reaction to a play? I doubt it. That alone makes it the greatest Eagles play...ever.
@1978eagles And you needed to enjoy it, because when your Eagles made it to the SB in early 1981 that team from Oakland laid down the law on them (and the rest of the NFL).
@rayjr62 Yeah well hey, the Raiders beat them in SB XV, but the Eagles made it to the Super Bowl that year by finally beating Dallas, their longtime rival who before had always gotten the better of them. Can't you at least give them credit for that?
Damn man, I'm in the Dallas camp all the way, but I'm smart enough to give credit where credit is due. The Eagles were a kickass team under Vermeil.
Couldn't have said it any better! I love the Cowboys and hated the Eagles back in that time, but I also had a damn lot of respect for them! As you said, no superstars or super talent, just Dick Vermeil and a kickass work ethic that finally got his team past the Cowboys and into the Super Bowl.
As much as I hated this game because Dallas lost, I was happy for the Eagles that their hard work and belief in themselves paid off. Great moment in the NFL, greatest play in Eagles history by far!
@1978eagles I have to beg to differ. This might be more important, but the Miracle at the Meadowlands 2 a few years ago might be the most amazing comeback I have ever seen...And that runback from Jackson...I must be a sports fan if that brings tears to my eyes. Where has that team gone?
actually, it's the LT that moves before the snap & probably should have been called. once a lineman puts his hand on the ground and establishes his position he cannot move/rock/reposition. and if you look at it the LT does rock back before the snap, after putting hand down initially. Not something a ref/official (i am one) wants to call but it could lead to defense encroaching. it would be false start. but as cowboy fan, bad defense anyway. nowadays officials call those slight movements more
I disagree that it was the greatest play in Eagles history. It might have been the most instrumental or significant (based upon the importance of the game), but I say the greatest individual play is Randal Cunningham's miracle TD pass at Buffalo in 1990. I think he threw it from the Bills end zone after somehow dodging a very heavy pass rush. What was it, 97 yards (over 100 since he threw it from the end zone)?
this wasnt even that good. if it was a one-handed catch or a QB sneak for a TD it would of been good but you see running backs get long up the middle touchdowns all the time
@Krazy48Killer It wasn't the greatest play per say, but might have been the most significant play in Eagles history. The reason is that this play put the Eagles ahead of the hated Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship game and the Eagles never looked back. This got the crowd, team and everyone into it and the Cowboys were buried 20-7 and the game wasn't even as close as the score.
@KKauffman1969 well i think maybe the creator could of told us something cause i from ATL and i dont really pay much attention to the eagles so how would i have known that
@futureneck4life that is called a "cut block," a block commonly thrown by smaller players such as receivers or backs who are incapable of drive or reach blocking. it is legal unless two blockers are involved
Wilbert was very underrated, imo. Marshall Faulk always reminded me of him (& of Joe Washington too.). That probably explains why Vermeil traded for Faulk while he was w/St. Louis now that I think about it. He wanted a back like Montgomery, who could do it all.
I realize Cowboys-Eagles is a serious rivalry, but come on! Instead of insulting each other, admire the excellent block by the right tackle to seal the running lane for Montgomery. Beautiful block, got his man turned, held him off. That's how you seal to the inside.
He is without a doubt, one of the most beautiful runners I have ever seen in my life. Of all the Eagles teams (I've been a fan since 1966) This is my favorite team. Jaworski, Montgomery, Carmichael, Bergey (The best linebacker EVER!) What a team man!
Wilbert was no Tony Dorsett, but he used to give us fits. Speaking of end zone celebrations, what if DeSean Jackson had tripped and fell while he was running parallel with the end zone in the latest Miracle in the Meadowlands. My money says that Eagles fans would've murdered him. What a fuckin play - what a fuckin comeback.
I'm a diehard Eagles fan, and I've heard all the stories about the rowdy crowd at the old Vet. I never got to see a game in the Vet, but boy do I wish I could have. The footage of old games shows the crowd and they seem to be ten times as crazy and passionate as the crowd at the Linc. Don't get me wrong, the Linc is nice and all, but it's not the same as the Vet.
@fassman316 I went to EVERY Eagles game at the Vet. Wilbert Montgomery was one of the most beautiful runners you'd ever see in your life. Such a disciplined back. Hit the hole with lightning speed and was a threat to take it all the way home every single time he touched the ball. He ran such beautiful routes with the most graceful cutbacks you could witness. I loved the Randall teams, I really liked the Donovan teams, but the Jaworski led teams were my favorites
whenever the cowboys and their fans are caught in a tough spot what do they point to ---> 5 rings <--- LOL. let me tell u something cowboys fans, if u think we Eagles fans give half a shit about ur rings let me redirect u to ur 4-8 record
We were inspired by the upcoming Eagles-Cowboys game on Sunday night to feature this video on PhillyPhanatics-dot-com. Please also check out our Top 10 list of Eagles victories over the Cowboys...I wonder where this game landed on the list?!??
@crcracker1 This was the last time the Cowboys wore this style blue jersey. Because of the so called "jinx" they changed the uniforms to a darker blue and with more detail around the numbers for the 1981 season.
Its funny how cowboys fans fall back on championships from 16 years ago when they dont have anything to say about the cowboys NOW! NOT THEN!!!! There is no one on that team with a ring! (oh wait! Jerry Jones wrinkled ass!) But hes not on the field, maybe he should be qb. Probably better than ROMO!
Cunningham to Fred Barnett from Buffalo's endzone was the best Eagles play ever, or Herman Edeards fumble return for a TD against the Giants, not this fucking shit.
Eagles are better than the Cowboys 4-2 Eagles 1-4 Cowboys just watch some bandwagon fan immediatly throws the super bowl card haha idk about you but i live in the present and Dallas is one of the worst teams in the league. So you can stay in your dark corner with ur super bowl trophies that u never seen them win.
@WORSTEVERR You dont make sense kid, what a surprise for an eagles fan not to make sense.
Isn't the SuperBowl what you play for? Yes, so dont get mad we bring up SuperBowls cause you know your eagles Fail in that department. Everybody lives in the present you Dummy, SuperBowl Trophies is the Present too, cause no one can take them away.
You dont like it, call the eagles and talk to reid to Stop Choking in the Playoffs and Actually get it done in the playoffs win the Damn SuperBowl for once.
@gfscarface13 hey we've bin saying for years that reid sucks were the fuck have you bin but your fucking cowboys have bin suckin dick for 16 years so don't talk shit
@gfscarface13 they got a good chance haha unlike the 1-4 Cryboys xD HOW BOUT DEM COWBOYS I see why u play the super bowl card in every argument you act like the Cowboys have the most championships
Put the Eagles vs. Cowboys crap aside for a second. Take another look at the video. What does Montgomery do with the ball when he gets into the end zone? He drops it, and celebrates like a true sportsman with some fans and his teamates, and then leaves the GD field. If this happened today, we'd have someone beating his chest, pointing to the sky or doing some ridiculous dance, ON HIS OWN, not giving a shit about his team, or the fans so long as he was in the spotlight. What a joke.
@1978eagles Relax old timer, I dont care if NFL Players celebrate now as long as it doesn't get out of hand and arrogant towards the opposing team, than thats different. Nothing wrong with a little Fun, thats why some people call the NFL No Fun League cause of opinions like yours.
The 1999 Rams had their whole O-Line dancing end zone when they scored a TD. They changed the rules after that.
Old timer my ass! Hey, I don't mind celebrating. My point, and you missed it, was that years ago IF players celebrated, they did so as a team. Your Rams example is a good one. Remember Washington's "Fun Bunch?" There's a another example. Houston's Billy "white shoes" Johnson did his own thing, but he was the exception. Today, it's all about "look at ME." Similarly, signaling "first down" (pointing down the field) when they make a play, any play..regardless if the TEAM is down by 21. Agree?
@1978eagles Great observation! I wish more fans and players would recognize that. No one's a sportsman anymore. It's all one big circus now. All show, no dignity.
@pretorious700 Agreed. That's true with most sports. To really be dedicated a professional has to play for the love of his sport. I get the money incentive; they are paid millions. But when money is the primary reason, egos get too big.
@1978eagles Your point is well taken, but misplaced. That was a different era, when the game was different. Today's game is much more about the show boating. Blame ESPN for this. The players just want to entertain the fans, so they'll do whatever it takes to create excitement.
@Rob774 Is this an excuse for unsportsmanlike behavior? There is nothing wrong with wanting to entertain the fans, but let's do so with our spectacular plays, rather than goofy celebrations. It's football, not dancing or a prayer service... just play the game and make memories.
@gfscarface13 You're just mad that the eagles are 8-4 and your Cowboys are 4-8 so suck it. History doesn't matter. I wasnt thinking about shit that happened before I was even born. So the Oakland Raiders beat us 30 years ago. I guess we eagles fans aren't still stuck in the 80s and 90s. Keep polishing those old trophies bitch because you're not getting one this year! Your so called "Big D" sucks "Big D"
@dougalmac54 I was asking an eagles fan how many SuperBowl Trophies do they have, and abviously the Bitch e-gals fan didn't answer.
And for you steelers, yeah one of those superbowls was giving to you guys on a Silver Platter. Refs gave you guys sb XL. Its a Fucking Joke. That superbowl will Always be known as the One the Refs gave to the steelers. Dont matter how many years will pass, it will always be known as a Shameful superbowl.
@gfscarface13 and there will always be a cowboys fan talking about super bowls they won in the past and when i ask how many playoff apearances they have these days they will not answer
@gfscarface13 how many years ago was that? i mean i will admit when you guys had tom landry and roger you guys were good i will not deny u that. but today u guys just have abunch of posers who only care about money
@MrRoboeagles It doesn't matter "how many years ago was that" cause it happend and No one can ever take our Lombardi Trophies. 5 of them, shiny Vince Lombardi Trophies in our SuperBowl Trophy Case.
@MrRoboeagles We were good 2 seasons ago, we just Failed badly last season. But now no more pressure of the superbowl being in our Stadium and we got new players through the NFL Draft and have a New Head Coach. We improved our O-Line, im expecting at least 10-11 wins this season.
This is remarkable quality! And who is that play-by-play? His voice is awesome.

I loved the Randall teams, I really liked the Donovan teams, but the Jaworski led teams were my favorites
bangitslo 1 year ago
@bangitslo I liked Montgomery but you have to admit they have never had a RB as good as Westbrook
Fondozzi2011 1 year ago
@Fondozzi2011 Westbrook was good, but give Mccoy a chance. He has potential

@Fondozzi2011 Ricky waters was pretty good and carried the offense himself for several years.

Remember this game, Cowboys were forced to wear their blue jerseys, in the 1980 NFC Championship game, the so called blue jersey jinx.

jacob5021363 1 year ago
@crcracker1 This was the last time the Cowboys wore this style blue jersey. Because of the so called "jinx" they changed the uniforms to a darker blue and with more detail around the numbers for the 1981 season.

Its funny how cowboys fans fall back on championships from 16 years ago when they dont have anything to say about the cowboys NOW! NOT THEN!!!! There is no one on that team with a ring! (oh wait! Jerry Jones wrinkled ass!) But hes not on the field, maybe he should be qb. Probably better than ROMO!
Standown129 1 year ago
Cunningham to Fred Barnett from Buffalo's endzone was the best Eagles play ever, or Herman Edeards fumble return for a TD against the Giants, not this fucking shit.
invadr1 1 year ago
Eagles are better than the Cowboys 4-2 Eagles 1-4 Cowboys just watch some bandwagon fan immediatly throws the super bowl card haha idk about you but i live in the present and Dallas is one of the worst teams in the league. So you can stay in your dark corner with ur super bowl trophies that u never seen them win.

1978eagles 1 year ago 45
@1978eagles Relax old timer, I dont care if NFL Players celebrate now as long as it doesn't get out of hand and arrogant towards the opposing team, than thats different. Nothing wrong with a little Fun, thats why some people call the NFL No Fun League cause of opinions like yours.
The 1999 Rams had their whole O-Line dancing end zone when they scored a TD. They changed the rules after that.
As long as they dont over do it, thats fine.
gfscarface13 1 year ago
Old timer my ass! Hey, I don't mind celebrating. My point, and you missed it, was that years ago IF players celebrated, they did so as a team. Your Rams example is a good one. Remember Washington's "Fun Bunch?" There's a another example. Houston's Billy "white shoes" Johnson did his own thing, but he was the exception. Today, it's all about "look at ME." Similarly, signaling "first down" (pointing down the field) when they make a play, any play..regardless if the TEAM is down by 21. Agree?
1978eagles 1 year ago
@1978eagles Yeah.
gfscarface13 1 year ago
@1978eagles Great observation! I wish more fans and players would recognize that. No one's a sportsman anymore. It's all one big circus now. All show, no dignity.

pretorious700 7 months ago
@pretorious700 Agreed. That's true with most sports. To really be dedicated a professional has to play for the love of his sport. I get the money incentive; they are paid millions. But when money is the primary reason, egos get too big.
TheAmbassador11 1 month ago
@1978eagles Your point is well taken, but misplaced. That was a different era, when the game was different. Today's game is much more about the show boating. Blame ESPN for this. The players just want to entertain the fans, so they'll do whatever it takes to create excitement.
Rob774 6 months ago
@Rob774 Is this an excuse for unsportsmanlike behavior? There is nothing wrong with wanting to entertain the fans, but let's do so with our spectacular plays, rather than goofy celebrations. It's football, not dancing or a prayer service... just play the game and make memories.
