God this takes me back I was ok with hand saws and panel saws but not dove tail saws it was a disaster for me too easy to balls up. I got that mad i just filled all the teeth off . Thanks for sharing.
@ridemybikecooper First of all, the strokes have to be quick, and you have to apply a bit of pressure, not just rub it...then, you have to follow a pattern, not start from the middle...then, you don't want the teeth at 90 degrees; that's too much, you won't be able to cut. you start at the end with the top of the file horizontally, i.e the teeth are at 60 degrees, and you slowly raise the angle (not to 90) also, you don't do it from both sides, just on one side. that's how you sharpen a saw.....
@39ynnoj Firstly, he meant 90 degrees with respect to the axis going up and down, i.e. parallel to ground. In the video, he had the file parallel to the ground but not at 90 with respect to the side of the blade. Secondly, it is imperative that you sharpen both sides, as it looks to be a crosscut saw, where the edges of each tooth are beveled alternately left, right, left, right, etc. If you sharpened each tooth on the same side, the saw would push itself sideways during the cut. look it up!
@eepmac I don't really need to look it up, I must have sharpened a saw about 30 times already and never goes wrong. And I'm not even doing general carpentry, I'm doing FINE WOODWORKING!!!
@39ynnoj And you are likely (or should be) using a back saw (miter saw, dovetail, dozuki, brassback) which is a rip cut saw. In this video, he is sharpening a cross cut saw... Search for "Saws part 2: sharpening a cross cut saw." Tom Lie-Nielsen is a master woodworking tool maker, and is responsible for designing some of the best tools in the industry. The video is incredibly detailed, but does a good job of explaining how cross cut saws cut and how they are best sharpened.
@eepmac Please tell me, this 'master woodworker' how long has he been woodworking? I am learning directly from a man who has been making furniture for the last 47 years.
Sharpen your saws as you please, allow me to carry on doing it the 'wrong' way
I only sharpen my little 14 tooth per inch dovetail saw and fret cutting backsaw. It is important to address rake angle and set, and he does not mention direction of file stroke (toward toe on push cutting saw sharpening tooth bent away from you) But this guy probably takes all for granted as he is a veteran. Sharpening handsaws was a breakthrough in my woodworking, it makes such a difference.
zthetha- Congrats. You're a youtube douche bag. Your parents should be so proud that you can now claim membership in the lamest group of ueless asshats who think that making stupid comments towards helpful people is productive, funny or meaningful.
Go back to watching Asian Cartoons or playing Videogames whatever else it is pathetic morons like you do.
@RoofFiddler I find that offensive! I watch Japanese anime and i enjoyed the video! i think it was just a comment about how the channel is too diverse giving useful info sure but hitting lots of niche audiences that aren't general interest - you subscribe for martial arts or cooking or something like that and get a lot of content you do not wish to see. Do not be so offended by it. That was not a youtube troll. in fact YOU have become the troll. Please watch your blood pressure.

Terrible. Is this a rip or a cross saw? How do you sharpen each type? What about setting the teeth? What about jointing the teeth? What about fleam? I don't see how you can presume to teach how to sharpen a saw without discussing ALL of these.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
with all the power tools they have today, why use a hand saw? Second, won't it be better just buy a new one, save time and I don't think hand saw are that expensive.
@iluvbogs you have a point but its good to have these old skills. Kinda like shaving with a straight razor. And i still havent gotten the hang of that.
Fred may be an expert saw sharpener, but it sure don't come across in this video. He doesn't even begin to relay the skill and knowledge that is used to sharpen handsaws. This video does an injustice to all the folks who still shapen by hand.
I agree, a file will leave a really rough finish like you sharpened it with 120 sandpaper, if you want nice sharp theeth get a ceramic tri angle sharper from the likes of spyder co, then stop the tooth with a bit of leather lace or thin strip of leather, that will keep the teeth sharp!
It would be nice if you actually managed to get across what part of the blade you are filing and at what angle. Maybe a drawing to illustrate this at the beginning would be helpful.
How would you measure 2-3lbs of pressure on each tooth with your hands? OldHowlingHound has it right...proper angles, set the teeth, and I would say the right machine would do a much better job.
There is lots more than what they have in the Expert Village posts. Angles must be correct and teeth need to be set too. Please see the rest of this series of videos, but if you really want to learn go to a good technical school. Carson's isn't going to give it all away on here.
you have posted a wonderful vieo give it a 5 star. please continue to post video to educated the children of tommorrow you are an asset to the world. Thank you again for your video.
Thank you! I was going to try a Dremel tool on this, and your method looks a lot easier and more effective.
