I was thoroughly confused with myself during this scene. I steadily agreed with him, of course not to the point of saying it's "Nigger Bullshit." Saying "This black thing, is just as good as this white thing," doesn't denounce racism at all. If we truly denounced racism, we would pick these books on the book itself, not who wrote it. It takes the false assumption that differences in outcomes between the races can only be attributed to "racism," and then, to "correct" the situation, standards are lowered either uniformly or specifically for the "discriminated against" group, etc. For example if a white applicant scores an 85 on a pre-employment test and a black applicant a 75, the black applicant might get the job offer.

This is stupid. Sorry but it is. There are reasons for opposing affirmative action. Why should someone lose their job for a less qualified person based on race. This country will remain balkanized and divided as long as fools like those in positions of power and authority continue to insist on affirmative action. A black teen coming from a poor background actually has more chances in life than a white teen coming from same circumstances, because the black teen can benefit from minority scholarships and affirmative action, IN ADDITION to the regular scholarships a white teen can benefit from.

It takes the false assumption that differences in outcomes between the races can only be attributed to "racism," and then, to "correct" the situation, standards are lowered either uniformly or specifically for the "discriminated against" group, etc. For example if a white applicant scores an 85 on a pre-employment test and a black applicant a 75, the black applicant might get the job offer.

@balancedeath black americans, after they were freed from slavery in 1865, were no longer "slaves" by any means. they were an oppressed people who were treated unfairly, but, by definition, they were ABSOLUTELY NOT slaves. "by any stretch of the imagination" = "however you look at it." So another way of putting it would be "black americans, no matter how you look at it, were not slaves after the emancipation proclamation."

in some states, people arent hired on as cops because they score too high on the tests, and it has nothing to do with race. certain police departments dont want their cops to be too intelligent, because the smarter you are, the more you question, and the more likely you are to deviate from established procedures, etc.--thats their rationale anyway. so those two cops may have been hired, not because they were black, but because the white guy was just too smart to be a cop in general.

I am all for giving folks a chance to shine, that they otherwise may not have gotten. HOWEVER, they have to PUT FORTH THE EFFORT. Not simply handed to them for free. You should get things in life based on your own merit, skill sets, character and integrity. I dont think its fair to lose your job to someone who cant read AND does not put forth any effort.

Like many whites, the father in the film ASSUMES that white men lost their jobs to "less qualified" black applications. That racist assumption/stereotype that is belied by historical and present day fact. The vast majority of high & middle income jobs are occupied by white men, in part, b/c of preferential racial hiring/discrimination that advantages white men.

The assumption that a person of color is under-qualified/less qualified than a white applicant, that a person of color "stole" a job from a white person is racist. Aff action policies were designed & implemented by Republican Pres. Richard Nixon's administration, quotas only applied to institutions (schools, businesses, etc) w/ a history of discriminating against white women and people of color.

Affirmative action is fucking crap and must be abolished. I was once passed up for a job when my family desperately needed money for some black girl who was unqualified and worked poorly. A friend of mine who knew the manager confirmed that it was an affirmative action hire. Its crap, the company lost production and I was unable to make a living because the corporation was more worried about political correctness than fairness. It fucking makes me sick.

Affirmative action is a necessary evil to balance out against legacy admission system and institutional racism. If underqualified children of whites get easier access to universities so should underqualified children of the poor to balance it out.

Very tolerant, but thats beside the point, i've also volunteered at poorer schools like in Oakland or Richmond, the gap in proper education is staggering, im proud of the government trying to even the scales for all minorities in low income cities trying to make it here.
