Strats are very versatile, you can pretty much play any type of music with a Stratocaster. However Les Pauls in many ways can sound a lot more better than a Strat, I would get a Les Paul for a more high gain sound for more smoother and darker tones. In the end, it's all about personal preference... or just get both!
