actually, theres two types of firewire. theres firewire 400 which looks like a modded USB port, and theres firewire 800 that looks like a modded ethernet port. and that mac has a firewire 800 port. (im typing from a macbook pro 13 inch 2nd gen by the way and firewire 800 is on the side.)

should have bought the Pro bro .... and/or .... you should have looked first. Macs with FW have FW800 jacks so when you get your FW device, check what it is and whether or not you need an adapter .... most are FW400.

My take is that the average Macbook user probably doesnt use or know wtf firewire is anyways. They have a mac just to have it. On the flip, a Macbook Pro user is a little more engaged in his/her computer, uses Mac for a specific reason, thus firewire a mandatory feature. Apple really should drop the regular MB line imo. You never (should) buy baseline models of anything.

no the adaptor goes into the firewire port, its just firewire 800, the adaptor will adapt the 800 to 400 as others have stated. 400 is the firewire you are used to seeing, that the old macs came with, firewire 800 is on all the new macs and is faster, goodluck.

Uuuuhhh... I don't know if you are really serious (and very confused) or, if you are just another, clueless, apple hating win fanboy, but whatever. Here goes:

All of the current MacBookPros come with firewire ports (even though firewire on a modern (AVCHD) camera is pretty rare.(or non existent?)

All you need is a firewire 4 pin to firewire 800 cable (9pin to 4pin) as Firewire 800 is backwards compatible to the 1st generation firewire) consult amazon or your local retailers.

As for the topic of this video in general: Apple withdrew firewire on it's least expensive macbooks (but not on the macbook pro's) because virtually all the current consumer (AVCHD) camcorders no longer support firewire.

There are some "prosumer" HDV camera's that require firewire but anyone with a $5-10K camera whining about spending the extra $200 for the macbook pro is just blowing smoke.

Canon HV20/HV30/HV40 all consumer they all use HDV which means they all use firewire. There are lot's more consumer cameras that use firewire. And the macbook pros started at 2000 at the time. The macbooks started at 1300... I got the 1300 model and starting film school in September. Man I hate apple for removing the firewire!!

the hv20 and 30 are long discontinued products, AFAIK out of the dozens of models of consumer HD camcorders that Canon has, the only one still using firewire is the HD40.

To answer you question, no, the usb port on an HV30 is used for transferring (mounting) the flash card, sadly though the HV30 cannot record video to it's flash card. But again that is one (old technology)  camera in a consumer HD line of 15 or 25 odd video camera's.

Apple tries to save space so they includes only Firewire 800 on all the new Mac. You just have to get Firewire 400 to Firewire 800 adapter. The least they can do is to keep the port looks the same except with higher speed.... just like USB 2.0.

It's because the MacBook is a consumer computer. Most peripherals and cameras (consumer cameras) are USB. However, because USB has a tendency to drop frames, most professional cameras use FireWire. That is why it is on the MacBook Pro.
