most kids study crazily hard, did you know that Korean kids and teens study more than 15 hours a day incluiding Saturdays?

If you've ever seen korean "idols" you will notice that almost 99% of the time they ALL have double eyelids, big round eyes, a higher nose bridge, slimmer jaw-line, and WHITE SKIN. take note on that last part, because this is the sole reason why I believe these ppl want to look white. Also I have a picture of my grandma when she was 20 years old and she didn't look much different from the Korean people in the Korean medias. The schools of korea don´t build self esteem. You have to learn too much while having literally "no life". In germany many schools try to give students the self esteem they need. Also, the government tries to strenghten self esteem through "advertising" and workshops. (I don´t know how is this in other countries.) I´m happy to life in germany, we have the least number of suicides and we are the 2nd most happy country in europe. I hope korea will make the educational system much more human..

lots of psychologists and sociologists claim that confucian culture is very harmful in developing individual identities, despite of the claim that confucian self is social self in a good sense.

Individualism breed the desire to look different... Such a high demand for plastic surgery is just evolving society expectations brought about there exposure to western culture.

Appearance is important. It's not the most important but it still is.Not only in Eastern culture, it's pretty valued in Western cultures too. Thats why all these girls suffer from anorexia and do plastic surgery. The whole society is fucked up. But still you have to take care of your appearance. it is known that at least 93% of korean women had plastic surgery in south korea. I read that due to the popularity of korean celebrities which are products of massive doses of plastic surgery creation created the korean wave. MOst koreans are very shallow and superificial. Most are born with no eyelid creases and a very unproportion face and that is why they do eyelids, nose jobs, facial bone contouring, skin bleaching along with all the facial implants u can think of. I always thought the Koreans I met in college (esp. recent immigrants, exchange students, people who didn't grow up American) were sadly materialistic, superficial, fake. All the women had to have this ugly brownish lipstick on, and painted on perfectly, and so much makeup without flaws, and brand name everything. @KYUNGILNAM It's not to become westernized. The U.S. have unknowingly started following many Korean-originated fashions.
Westernizing oneself isn't the point. They simply want to be more like THEIR society's ideal. The ideal happens to look like someone people might consider more 'western', which, really is rather euro-centric of them.
Who the hell cares about some other societies on the other side of the earth? It's their peers who judge them by their society's ideals.

during the chosun dynasty (1392-1897 A.D.), the ideaL beauty had small eyes (double eyelids were very rare. only 10% of koreans have natural double eyelids), small lips, and small nose. but now korean people want big eyes with double eyelids , high nose, and so on. it is definitely the influence of westernization. to put it differently, it is the consequence of the colonized mind.

It's not the Chosun Dynasty right now. Yes, there was a western influence, but it's just that. Influence. Most Koreans aren't trying to become the 'Westerners' of now, but the influence has affected the modern ideal. There's a difference between wanting to become westernized, and wanting to become a west-influenced ideal.

@KYUNGILNAM western faces are more punctuated because of their evolutionary differences in time and adaptation. not all races started out the same contrary to modern evolution myths. the newer races (koreans are the newest race) are million years behind western races but have exceedingly outpaced their western counterparts in intelligence (korea is highest IQ in the world).
we are not "trying" to be western. we are merely finding our identities.
