dude that was really good seriously maybe the only thing you could make better is to show some of the car in the fire but very realistic either way. are you going to upload the full movie? looking forward to it...
Hey I'm working on a no budget student film as part of my final year of uni. I have a similar scene in mind where the main character gets in his car which then explodes. Im just looking for some advice, how did you go about creating this? Cheers.
One tip (if you care): When the car has exploded and you see it from the side (excuse my bad english) you should show a small part of the front of the car. and maybe a little part of one of the doors. This would make it look even more realistic than it already does and ensures you there really is a car in all the fire. ;)
lookin ´forward to see the full movie! :)
p.s Excuse my bad english I'm only 13 and from sweden :D
well im a pyrotechnician by trade .. and seen many explosions.. and nothing looks good as a real one.. best not try something that dont look quite right .. best get someone that can do it for real.. or not include it in your script !
I agree on nothing looking as good as the real deal. But this was a nobudget project. I wanted to see what's possible with creativity and I don't think it looks that bad. Of course it's hard to satisfy a pyrotechnician, but the movie wasn't made for professionals, it was just for fun and not one single viewer out of 200 people (professional film makers included) complained about the car explosion looking too fake. It's not real and noone ever said that.
It's not that CGI as you may think - it's a real miniature with real smoke and flash effects. There are just some superimposed flames and it looks far better when not heavily compressed as on YouTube. And after all it's nobudget, but obviously you don't read video descriptions...
Thanks! Yes I did, with some help of a friend. The complete scenery with both cars and the parking lot is a model (my friend built the surrounding out of wood, I did the cars, basically modifying them). The actual explosion is a real smoke-flash effect, shot with 3 cameras, slowed down to 1/4 speed and superimposed digital flames.

Great work! Its easy to be a critic. I'm working on a no budget short movie right now and know how tough it is to create any effetcts!!!
BRAVO!

at 0:17 there should be some yellowish
flamelight coming towards the boy falling
down on the floor. Need to research and
view carefully each FX footage you're about
to shoot. Draft & plan in text, then story-
boarding, shoot footage, post production &
lastly edit (footage, FX footage blend & sound)
If first 2 things are done carefully, there should
be no touchup needed at the end. Good work!

Usually video shots are at 30fps or 25fps
so follow the video fps flow but remember
don't try shrink to 15fps to shorten footage
rendering. 15fps would look very awkward
and fake.

What framerate did you film the explosion at?

Ok, that has to be the best explosion scene I've seen yet. Where was the fireball taken from?
NastySod 4 years ago
Thank you! The fireball is from Artbeats ReelExplosions, but it would have never looked that good without the real (non-digital) flash and smoke.
