But dogs aren't useless because people take dogs as pets for the sake of having a social animal as a companion. Cats, I would say, are generally terrible companions because of their independence. The bond between humans and dogs is far greater than cats in my opinion.

I remember when I was a kid, I put aluminum foil on my cat's feet, and started laughing at the way it made him walk. He started trying to pull it off with his teeth, and then looked at me as I was laughing, and just gave me this look of major disapproval. I immediately stopped laughing, and took the foil off his feet. Ever since then, I have more respect for animals... Animals have feelings, and it's possible to hurt them.

I assume the dog has had a few claws to the nose...Mostly it happens that dogs first acquaint themselves through scent, hense the sniffing. It is only through scent that dogs are able to recognize familiar individuals. Also, when dogs jump they are actually attempting to communicate directly with you,it is their instinctual behavior to touch faces by sniffing or licking etc. That is how dogs communicate with other dogs in a pack and it is a friendly thing.

The fact that she shows interest as well as caution indicates that she probably hasn't seen many small animals or cats up close before. She is a very lovely dog, by the way.
