Valid point. I think Johns an amazing guitar player. I certainly don't think he is anywhere near as innovative as Pantera was. Look at dimebags funeral...EVERY guitar god was there. I think he's much more respected in the guitar community.
He's really really good, but he's just trying too hard and it shows. It's so difficult to put into words what is just awkward about the way he tries to hedge his image. He's like a preppy square turned arrogant bad boy, but it's not really working... But I think the best blues guitarist today is Derek Trucks.

While I think this is an impressive and crazy performance (he and the crowd were loving every minute of it), playing behind you head isnt that hard if you've practiced your scales and have that muscle memory. I'll give him the one handed thing, that was kinda cool, although thats not too hard either. The stuff on the ground was tight though and it was a really good, if flashy, solo.
@Siciliancameleon i think people (specifically girls) went nuts when he did the guitar-behind-the-head trick coz they could see his body, and you know how the ladies are a t JM gig... practically wet from the first note :P

And yes, you can say that Mayer is a "creator and originator" because he's done things in his songs that no one's ever done before. He takes pop music to a new level. He brought blues back to the "pop" scene. That's pretty inovative if you ask me.

the head is in my opinion the most overrated trick ever, because its easy. as he started playing with
"one hand" he was just doing hammer ons and pull offs. and then he just used a slide.
