RIGHT PEOPLE AND OTHER JUDOKA. I AM A BLACK BELT IN THE SPORT. THIS NEW RULE IS RIDICULOUS. JIGORO KANO DID NOT WANT THIS. IN HONOUR OF HIS NAME PLEASE VOTE THIS COMMENT UP AND TOGETHER WE WILL TRY AND BANISH THIS NEW RULE.
This new rule no leg attacks sucks!!judo have too many throws that are leg attacks the kata guruma is a blue belt throw yet you can even use a elementary throw! That was my most effective throw.

Marius Vizer (president of IJF) states that he incorporated this rule because Wrestling & Sambo's influence was taking over Judo... what is he talking about? Because of this rule thousands left Judo into BJJ, Wrestling & Sambo. Instead of winning people over from BJJ/Sambo, Judo is now losing those people. IMO Judo is supposed to evolve but not backwards. Marius Vizer states that this was the original Judo, that's not true ... leg grabbing techniques were & are part of the original Kodokan rules
These rules are supposed to induce more of a standup style of judo!! mmmm! Think they should target the position of negativity rather than stop a vital part of throwin! Leg grabs!!!
Yeah this definately is gonna be a problem,i'm a judo fighter myself and this will be like Greco-Roman wrestling with a jacket,i would'nt mind that be that i do greco-roman also, what rhadi ferguson said was on the mark, you have to really solid with your grips and be fully committed when you throw, athletes adapt true but starting out this will be somewhat a headache!!!
by the way: can anybody tell me why nr. 27 and 29 get a hansoku make? as far as i know you are allowed to grab the leg if your opponent actively gets an one sided grip over the shoulder?
All these new rules are BS and to me, are spoiling Judo. If one wants to grab a leg, let him/her grab a leg. Proper Judoka should be able to defend against lame wrestling tactics. These new rules do not all emulate a real fight, which I believe a martial art should do. MMA for me!
@neilzyaus i don't know how you come to think that these rules are spoiling judo. in recent years it became obvious that the IJF had to take action because the 'real judocas' as you call them, meaning competetive athletes knew how to defend against leg grabbing. they bent down and lowered their hips just like their 'wrestling opponents'. the result were boring fights and the decline of classical technices. i mean did you watch some of those world cups at that time? it was horrible.....
@neilzyaus the new rules really improved the attractiveness of judo. this year's fights are so much better than the crap i had to watch and deal with last year.
so if you want to do MMA then go ahead. there's clubs and leagues for that. but judo, competetive judo is first of all a sport and not a martial art. as a judoka i dont have to compare to other martial arts/ sports.

As a bit of history the advantage of a lot of these takedowns has been the shorter person playing a taller person. So now the game is going advantage taller judoka.
The other thing is these takedowns became more popular when the scoring changed from 'land largely on back with speed, force and control' to 'roll largely across the back in a continuous movement'. throws that use to score the lowest now obsolete Koka were now scoring Ippon and giving advantage to drop in techniques, leg takedowns.
This is so stupid! In almost every example of a leg grab penalty the attack was successfully defended or little advantage was gained. So what's the point? This garbage is only going to make the sport more confusing and boring for the spectator. As well as making judo less effective as a martial art. Most refs had a hard enough time judging judo before now they add these barely discernible differences for valid and in valid leg touching. Maybe I'll switch to BJJ (never thought I'd say that)
I've been involved in judo for over 30 years (with National and International experience and titles), and the vast majority of judoka think these new leg grab rules are a bunch of crap. Dr Kano introduce kata guruma, so why do we want some dude on a board telling us what is and what is not considered legit "judo"? Plus an immediate hansoku make call is even bigger crap. Check out AAU "Freestyle Judo" rules for an option. These new IJF rules will not advance the sport whatsoever.
Thats freakin ridicoulous! That was always my go to... Tsurikomi-ashi to Sode Tsurikomi-goshi to Kata Guruma. Never failed if I got it spot on. These rules are crap.
hey i am new to judo so this should not be a problem for me what about the other who have been doing this for years this is going to fcuk there game right up why have these changes been brought in
No man, they will be a problem for you. Because what you are learning is weak sauce, watered down Judo. If things get worse, with more strict rules, you'll never be able to develop a strong foundation in Judo's Self defense aspects. If things get better, and they open up the rules, then you'll be behind all the new kids who will learn the old school tricks and attacks with a clean slate.
Demand more from your sensei! Ask to randori with classical rules! Do AAU freestyle!

This rule also means.. keep attacking.. I seen way too many judoka's being way to patience. They need to keep the attacks coming.

@pcjudosambo The techniques are used because they work. If you lose sight of that you don't know what Judo is about.
