@nabilzing1 Why compare them? It's not a contest -- enjoy them both, equally if you want to, or not equally if that's how you feel. A song that needs one performer and one performer only to make it leads a very precarious existence.
Wants And Needs We found an energy source we created something with wheels that we called an automobile We thought hydrocarbon energy was the best choice we dug holes in the earth to feed our cars we dug holes in the bottom of the sea We destroyed the earth because we didn’t understand the difference between wants and needs M.S. Morrison
Hey, I haven't heard that in ages, or was it eons? Wonder why they don't play it over the radio anymore... Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New 2011. Godspeed!
"Bones" Malone on trumpet! The solo by Lew remains my favorite jazz outing ever, and Georg Wadenius NEVER fails to entertain w/his great guitar licks!!!
Beats the snot outta DCT's version - Jerry is a fabulous vocalist, without peer!
Thanks again & again for posting this best version ever of BS&T's tune, from a very long time ago!
this just makes my soul feel good. puts me in mind of back in the day. these guys were the very first concert i ever attended at Kiel auditorium in St Louis.
I really agree. When a vocalist can interpret a classic without having to imitate the more popularly recognized version, it says a lot about the quality of their musicality. I love this version too.
Let's not be too harsh on this guy. David Clayton Thomas was so much better than him but it's wrong to be so hyper critical of this guy. It's still a great arangement
i'm sorry but i have been listening to bs&t since the early 70's and there is no doubt that DCT was far better then this hack he should have stuck to play the brass
@omt1957 Remember, DCT left the group, after BS&T 4 failed to produce any top 10 hits. He thought that HE was the reason that the band was successful, so he went on a "solo" career, which failed miserably - BS&T was a COLLABORATION of writing, vocals, jazz solos by brass & woodwind instruments AND the times of the late 60s to early 70s!
Jerry was a wonderful singer, and made some great LPs w/the band!!!
Superb solo by Lew - the strongest soloist that the band EVER had! Love the way he really WORKS to scream out the hi notes - incredible trumpeter!!! Still is!
No, Lew has always been active as a jazz & studio musician, performing for such acts as Gil Evans, Michael Franks, Hilton Ruiz, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Giovanni Hidalgo, Carla Bley, & the Lincon Center Jazz Orchestra. Needless to say, Lew has been in constant demand as a soloist, due to his professionalism and ability to improvise on jazz melodies with the best trpt players!
Soloff sounded great then! Nice solo here. Yet he's the weakest featured player..well, next to Steve Shenkman, in the Maynard Tribute gig. That's what age will do to ya'.
Billie Holiday composition... but I didn't know that when I heard it for the first time on BS&T's second LP in 1969... couldn't get it out of my head... still can't... Fred Lipsius' changes? Whoever's: Definitive.
I love this band. Saw them in Hawaii around 1970. It was awesome. Lew Soloff really blew me away on trumpet! He could really nail those high notes. I was playing trumpet in my high school stage band back then, and got to solo alot. And I always wished I could play like him. The other guys were great, as well.
The best version i've ever heard hands down is by Jonny Fair. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. It gave me chills...
Jerry Fisher is more a Ray Charles type singer. This song really brings out the Ray Charles influence which is great. I happen to love Ray Charles sytle and Jerry's definately a good student of Rays.
Ichisatori is wrong. Bass player is Jim Fielder. This video must have been made in 1973. Jerry Fisher (v), Bobby Colomby (d), George Wadenius (g), Fielder (b), Larry Willis (p), Lew Soloff & Tom Malone (tpt), Dave Bergeron (tb, congas), Lou Marini Jr. (s).
Ron McLure joined later in 73 along with Jerry Lacroix. Jaco Pastorius replaced McClure briefly before joining Weather Report. McClure returned then.
Wadenius left in '75, replaced briefly by Steve Khan, and then Mike Stern same year.
we're playing this song in my Jazz band class, and it is so GREAT!!!!! This is the best version i found. Aretha Franklin also did a decent version, but not as good
Thomas left the band in'72. In'74 the band was on stage at the Wherehouse nightclub in Denver and Thomas sat in with this version of bs&t and the place went nuts. He rejoined the group the following night.I know this as fact because I was in the audience when a spontaneous DCT came up onstage. Vocalist Jerry Fisher was replaced at that moment.
ah yes, that is McClure. Stern was '76. Jaco's first record (produced by Colomby) was '76.
and i know PM and JP were friends during the UM years (ending end if '73, PM went north to GB and soon to meet and mentor MS)... so, did JP actually ever play with BS&T?
I have been listening this song with this band since it was released, certainly not my favorite version. I agree that the B-3 should not be replaced by any other keyboard. Larry Wills is a fine keyboardist but in this one I miss Dick Halligan. Interesting in many moments. I am from Mexico. God Bless BS&T.
The Rhodes replacing that great Hammond B3 sound from the original... just didn't get it for me... and they tried to stylize this so much that it lost its groove... kind of like the batteries wearing down on my casette player... sorry... and this is one of my all time favorite tunes... and yup DC Thomas back in the day just killed me on this song... I've heard him lately and he's singing as if.by the numbers.and kind of sound more like hes doing a Kenny Rogers imitation
wow! what an amazing sound! my friends father was the tour bus driver for the who and sun ra, and a few others back in the day.. and his hi fi sounded like this lol.. i love this sound from the beat club, it will never happen again, and what a great venue eh that large theatre!!! great performance too ...

@lonlinke The song was written by Billie Holiday. According to her autobiography, she wrote it after an argument over money with her mother.
