  • Jerry Fisher can sing the phone book, good heart, soal, another Ray Charles

  • bs&t screwed uo by reolacing Jerry Fisher with DCT

  • Very nice

  • senza Dave Clayton-Thomas è..........diverso

si sente la diferenza ,anche di arrangiamento......

  • Great treatment of one of their classics!

  • I think this is German....Musik Laden means Music shop....me thinks

  • maravillosa!!! Fantastica!!! Una virguería soberbia!!

  • I wish the singer had David Clayton Thomas's voice...

  • HAts off to This song!.Awesome.

  • Magic.

  • A lot of heart and "life" going on here ... love it! ♥ Grew up hearing Billie Holiday singing it ...

  • OMG this is real music people.....

  • Love the 'back stories' to all these wonderful songs from this era...anyone know the reason 'why' this song was written?

  • @lonlinke The song was written by Billie Holiday. According to her autobiography, she wrote it after an argument over money with her mother.

  • jazz rock ehhh bueno

  • Whoa really smooth right here

  • oh who said this is better than Billie Holiday???

I love this version... but no one can touch Billie...

  • @nabilzing1 Why compare them? It's not a contest -- enjoy them both, equally if you want to, or not equally if that's how you feel. A song that needs one performer and one performer only to make it leads a very precarious existence.

  • What a WONDERFUL beginning to this all time BS&T classic! Then he starts singing...

  • Absolutely great music and bana and vocal!!!!!

  • ~ Dedicated To Christina Green; the 9 year old who lost her life on 01/08/11 ~

  • @WSU85DET I'm so very sorry for the loss.

  • Wants And Needs We found an energy source we created something with wheels that we called an automobile We thought hydrocarbon energy was the best choice we dug holes in the earth to feed our cars we dug holes in the bottom of the sea We destroyed the earth because we didn’t understand the difference between wants and needs M.S. Morrison
  • Hey, I haven't heard that in ages, or was it eons? Wonder why they don't play it over the radio anymore... Anyway, Merry Christmas and Happy New 2011. Godspeed!

  • best version of this song-i mean even over Billy Holiday DCT is stonecold

and th solo is sweeeeet man

  • That's Lew Soloff on trumpet!!

  • Comment removed

  • hehe german TV! ;-)

  • I love the horn section but then I am partial to horns!!

  • Sweet perfection!

  • What a fantastic voice !

  • I love this version!!! Fantastic

  • A creation by God. Best I know.

  • Thank you.....It's beautiful

  • go Lew!!!

  • ♥♥ ♫♪♫ and mucho more ♥♥♥'s :)

  • BST, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire.......greatness.

  • @pflqr so true... i grew up listening to them because of my pop.....and I will always love them all....

  • the best version of this song by BST

  • ? what year was this filmed?

  • Great, great.....simply great!!!!!

  • There are no bands like this anymore...........this was a fucking great band. To bad that they don't exist anymore

  • Jerry Fisher did a great job on this.

  • Looks like Pat Metheny on guitar but it is not.

  • @ThatOneDude88

His name is Georg "Jojje" Wadenius, a great guitarist from Sweden.

  • "Bones" Malone on trumpet! The solo by Lew remains my favorite jazz outing ever, and Georg Wadenius NEVER fails to entertain w/his great guitar licks!!!

Beats the snot outta DCT's version - Jerry is a fabulous vocalist, without peer!

Thanks again & again for posting this best version ever of BS&T's tune, from a very long time ago!

  • this just makes my soul feel good. puts me in mind of back in the day. these guys were the very first concert i ever attended at Kiel auditorium in St Louis.

  • This is SOOOOOO HOT!!!

  • Spit valve...

  • HAIR

  • 4 :21

  • Thanks so much for posting...

  • at 1:11 , why does the guy grab his bell?

  • he's probably actually pushing on his tuning slide with his thumb

  • @werealldoodshey makes sense...

  • I like this version just as much as the DCT version.

  • @TechMaven

I really agree. When a vocalist can interpret a classic without having to imitate the more popularly recognized version, it says a lot about the quality of their musicality. I love this version too.

  • Let's not be too harsh on this guy. David Clayton Thomas was so much better than him but it's wrong to be so hyper critical of this guy. It's still a great arangement

  • Love the tempo - thanks for posting

  • No comparison to the David Clayton Thomas era.

  • i'm sorry but i have been listening to bs&t since the early 70's and there is no doubt that DCT was far better then this hack he should have stuck to play the brass

  • @omt1957 Remember, DCT left the group, after BS&T 4 failed to produce any top 10 hits. He thought that HE was the reason that the band was successful, so he went on a "solo" career, which failed miserably - BS&T was a COLLABORATION of writing, vocals, jazz solos by brass & woodwind instruments AND the times of the late 60s to early 70s!

Jerry was a wonderful singer, and made some great LPs w/the band!!!

  • Superb solo by Lew - the strongest soloist that the band EVER had! Love the way he really WORKS to scream out the hi notes - incredible trumpeter!!! Still is!

  • was Lew, the trumpet player that went on and played christian music after BST broke up???

  • No, Lew has always been active as a jazz & studio musician, performing for such acts as Gil Evans, Michael Franks, Hilton Ruiz, Manhattan Jazz Quintet, Giovanni Hidalgo, Carla Bley, & the Lincon Center Jazz Orchestra. Needless to say, Lew has been in constant demand as a soloist, due to his professionalism and ability to improvise on jazz melodies with the best trpt players!

  • Good song! :-)

  • Soloff sounded great then! Nice solo here. Yet he's the weakest featured player..well, next to Steve Shenkman, in the Maynard Tribute gig. That's what age will do to ya'.

  • The Marching Jayhawks performed this as their closer for their BST show. It was amazing!!

  • CANCION DE 1969

  • Do I hear "KILLER JOE" in the mid section? Is "CHESTER THOMPSON" on keyboards?

  • Hey, I've always loved their album versoin of this song with Clayton Thomas but this is a great version as well.

  • Janice may have done it better, but not by much

  • This dude could sing.

  • Billie Holiday composition... but I didn't know that when I heard it for the first time on BS&T's second LP in 1969... couldn't get it out of my head... still can't... Fred Lipsius' changes? Whoever's: Definitive.

  • One of my favs they did...Blessings Annie

  • was this from snl ?

  • I"m pretty sure this is way to early for SNL. This looks like about 1972 I'm guessing.Let me know if I'm wrong.

  • I think their brass section is tighter then Chicago's

  • I saw Lew Soloff recently in the 55 bar New York playing with Mike Stern. He's amazing alright. His solo on this clip is fantastic.

  • lew soloff cliniced my school band and he said that he tough that i could make it as a bass player, it way very inspiring

  • I love this band. Saw them in Hawaii around 1970. It was awesome. Lew Soloff really blew me away on trumpet! He could really nail those high notes. I was playing trumpet in my high school stage band back then, and got to solo alot. And I always wished I could play like him. The other guys were great, as well.

  • Anyone know when this was recorded? Is that Lew Soloff on trumpet? BS & T really sounds like a Jazz Blues band here!

  • most really decent band can change their sound, depending on the song... and this is a blues song, soo........ It's a very good song, though.

  • my friends mom loves this

  • Man Lew Soloff is flying in that solo, superb

  • The best version i've ever heard hands down is by Jonny Fair. It's still up here last i checked, give it a listen & you'll see what i mean. It gave me chills...

  • chilling arangment. you know it's a reall band wene it has horns suprized some rapper hasen't sampeled it yet

  • OMG! This is their version from Rock Superstars!!

    Thanks for posting this!

  • Mistake to swing it I think.

  • my favorite song, greatest band I know! there amazing!!!

  • Jerry Fisher is more a Ray Charles type singer. This song really brings out the Ray Charles influence which is great. I happen to love Ray Charles sytle and Jerry's definately a good student of Rays.

  • Ichisatori is wrong. Bass player is Jim Fielder. This video must have been made in 1973. Jerry Fisher (v), Bobby Colomby (d), George Wadenius (g), Fielder (b), Larry Willis (p), Lew Soloff & Tom Malone (tpt), Dave Bergeron (tb, congas), Lou Marini Jr. (s).

Ron McLure joined later in 73 along with Jerry Lacroix. Jaco Pastorius replaced McClure briefly before joining Weather Report. McClure returned then.

Wadenius left in '75, replaced briefly by Steve Khan, and then Mike Stern same year.

  • Doesn't hold a candle to David-Clayton Thomas. The singing is weak, the tempo too slow and overridden by the guitar.

  • I absolutely agree...100%

  • A crust of bread and such...

  • we're playing this song in my Jazz band class, and it is so GREAT!!!!! This is the best version i found. Aretha Franklin also did a decent version, but not as good

  • Powerful jazz, rythm and blues version. So glad I came across this eclectic group of musicians who proves that great music trancends color.

  • GOD BLESS LPC 8-28-92 - 3-24 92 RIP we love you and miss you forever but we know you are okay with Jesus

  • Damn. . . blue-eyed soul sure tastes good!

  • Thomas left the band in'72. In'74 the band was on stage at the Wherehouse nightclub in Denver and Thomas sat in with this version of bs&t and the place went nuts. He rejoined the group the following night.I know this as fact because I was in the audience when a spontaneous DCT came up onstage. Vocalist Jerry Fisher was replaced at that moment.

  • yes he looks like the brother of chewbacca, but he sings great

  • Jerry Fisher looks like a wookie

  • Honestly, one of the most beautiful songs written in rock.

  • Honestly rock didn't write this song. Billie Holliday and Jazz gave this song to us

  • written in rock???

you should look up the history of this song

  • This Was Wonderful! ^_^

  • Mike Stern!

  • is that Jaco? i think it is.

    wow.

  • Guitarrist is George Wadenius, bassist is Ron McClure. Jaco came later.

  • ah yes, that is McClure. Stern was '76. Jaco's first record (produced by Colomby) was '76.

and i know PM and JP were friends during the UM years (ending end if '73, PM went north to GB and soon to meet and mentor MS)... so, did JP actually ever play with BS&T?

  • nice song i love it good job!!

  • I have been listening this song with this band since it was released, certainly not my favorite version. I agree that the B-3 should not be replaced by any other keyboard. Larry Wills is a fine keyboardist but in this one I miss Dick Halligan. Interesting in many moments. I am from Mexico. God Bless BS&T.

  • the tall guy on 2nd trpt is Tom "bones" Malone

  • The Rhodes replacing that great Hammond B3 sound from the original... just didn't get it for me... and they tried to stylize this so much that it lost its groove... kind of like the batteries wearing down on my casette player... sorry... and this is one of my all time favorite tunes... and yup DC Thomas back in the day just killed me on this song... I've heard him lately and he's singing as if.by the numbers.and kind of sound more like hes doing a Kenny Rogers imitation

  • Jerry Fisher is the vocalist...much more soul than David Clayton Thomas, but not as much as Jerry La Croix.

  • DON'T JOIN SCIENTOLOGY (Fictiontology)!!!

  • Wow, Doctor Zaius was the lead singer for BS and T? Interesting.

  • Shut the feck up

  • wow! what an amazing sound! my friends father was the tour bus driver for the who and sun ra, and a few others back in the day.. and his hi fi sounded like this lol.. i love this sound from the beat club, it will never happen again, and what a great venue eh that large theatre!!! great performance too ...

  • Who the hell is the tall guy on second trumpet?

  • Same question here...???

  • Compare this video to Drumcam's version and you be the judge

  • It's not as good as DCT did it' Sounds like he is afraid to sing it.

  • are they still jamming?

  • That's Jerry Fisher lead singer.

  • Is that Burl Ives singing?? :-) (heheheheee!!)

  • it's jerry fisher...he replaced DCT for a couple of years

  • You're so funny.

  • Have you every heard Burl Ives sing? Get your hearing checked for your own sake.

  • I believe the singer is Jerry Lacroix. Also sang with The Edgar Winter Group, and others...

  • Great to hear this...it would be brilliant to hear Fire and Rain as it doesn't appear to be on youtube....anyone out there please put it up?

  • a think thats the new guy who entered after david clayton left the band!. I hope someone could upload a video of the 60s or 70s with david singing this awesome song!.

  • that is not David Clayton Thomas! That is not Joe Cocker! I don't know who that is. Sounds as if this predated David entering the band.

  • is it Joe Cocker on the lead ?

  • great musicians !!! in the seventy the very best ones !! Nobody had never played pop music this way !

    TERRIFIC !

  • whos that guy singing???--lol

  • I think it was David Clayton Thomas.

  • jerry fisher is the singer.
