  • Is this right near the old elementary?

  • I live there in 1971-1973 kool..

  • Thank you so much "roadking"!! My family lived in Butzbach from 59-62..12A Virginia Rd.! As every kid did, back then, we lived at the AYA...how great to see that once again. I remember Saturday mornings, meeting at the AYA, and getting on a bus to go to the movies. Across from our playground was a prison, and gees the story all the kids would tell about hearing things going on there!! LOL

Thank you again for the memories! Karen ( Morris) Vinion

  • I lived there as a kid. Took Tae Kwon Do with Eddie Carrillo. Met Jimmy and Jennifer Carrillo, Chris Gaxiola, Stanley Butts, etc. Great memories.

  • Thank you so much for these videos. You actually have the apartment I lived in at the very begining of this video. I learned to ride my first bike on this side walk. I remember thinking the hill infront of the building was a mountain. You have no idea how much this means to me and my 3 sisters. I just wish you could do the same with our neighborhood in Furth. Thanks so much!!!!! If Jimmy or Jennifer Carillo ever see this, my friends from upstairs look me up on Facebook!!! 1983 to 1986 Nikki

  • @nemerson78

Glad you enjoyed the trip down memory lane Nikki and hope your upstairs neighbors will find you.

  • I lived in that building when I was a kid! You also showed a shot of my HS home on Georgia Rd. Shame on you for making me cry!

The Buddha was my fave, run by Frau Rosie! Her Frittes were da bomb!

The shoppette was after my time, but I remember the AYA well. Many good times were had there.

  • I lived in that building when I was a kid! Shame on you for making me cry!

  • i was 18 years old when i got station at butzbach, single, alone, and decided to practice my german that i studied in high school. it worked, i met a lot of German friends my age there at the gasthaus's on Saturday afternoon's. Which improve my German language much further. Their parents treated me like a son, invited me to their house for supper etc. Christmas's; their holidays, etc. it was like a home away from home. Until i met this kid from an american german family.

  • i was in Butzbach from 1973 to 1978, oh the memories. i resided with a family on michigan st. where i met my little friend jimmy, when he was 11 years and i was a single solider coaching baseball and football. through i met his sister which later become my wife. i was proud and happy to marry into a german family, even now that me and my wife are divorced. my in laws are/were awesome and beautiful people. Butzbach was my first duty station at the age of 18. I love that town.

  • I was a 10 year girl when my Dad was stationed in Butzbach. We lived on Oregon right across from the dispensier and dental clinic. This video brings back wonderful memeories. The AYA where we had dances and the baseball field where my older brother played. Oh yeah and George G.. the 1st boy to ever kiss me. LOL Thanks Road

  • I was stationed at the "Rock" Kirchgones from 1981 to 1984. The place sure has changed. The trees and the bushes are so much bigger, back then it was wide open area, you could play football between the buildings. No gates or fences, no covered share a ride back then. We lived on New York Ave. Thanks Roadking!

  • lived ther 1976-77 and had a blast where are all my buds and where is the bird-cage and who is hangin out down at the "apple orchard"

  • I remember pomme frites and the shoppette/video store!

  • I am so glad you got the DYA in this video, me and my siblings would go here after school in 1978-1981, I guess the name changed from AYA to DYA, around the corner was Foodland (shoppette) where I would buy candy & soda. Gosh such memories, we lived on New York Rd! ;)

  • i used to live there. i miss it so much. its soo sad to think that its abandoned now

  • Roadking, thank you so much for the videos. All of these years thinking back trying to picture life in Butzbach. Your work sealed my memories. We lid there in '80 - '84. We lived in apt 2C in front of the clinic. I remember playing soldier in the woods behind the clinic. We would also ride our bikes up the dirt road into the woods where real soldiers would train with tanks. My friends Jesse and brother james Storey, Shaun and many others. It is sad that its closed down, I wanted to go back.

  • Thank you for the walk down memory lane. we lived in bldg 6514 from Oct 2001 'till july 2007. we were one of yha last families to leave the housing area. Lots of good memories, thak you RoadKing you are the best!

  • Gosh the memories ... I'll have to ask my parents and ask them the name of the street where I grew up. Its a shame they won't let you into your old apartment.

  • Thank you very much for the memories I lived in the bldg where you started the video 6537 12 H Michigan Rd....I lived there in temps from Aug 1983-Aug 1984 when we moved to permanent quarters in

Bad Nauheim. I attended school there and also took Tae Kwon Do with Eddie Carillo who also lived in that bldg....Thanks again!!!!

  • Also....I remember the "Budha" that you are referring to. I don't recall what we called them in 81' - '84 but there were two of them. One at one end of the road near the school and the other at the other end of the road. When we were there, they sold Brats, palmfritz (french fries) and brochen (german bread) to name a few things. Mom would send us up there from time to time to get "dinner". She got so pissed because they always seemed to burn the brats every time!

  • Thanks for the walk down memory lane!! We lived in Butzabach from 1975 to 1978. Our address was 12-A michigan Rd and I could see the back of it from your video!!!!I went to Butzabach Elementary and my brother went to Giessen middle school I will never forget the dances that we attended at the AYA!!

  • Definately a huge rush of memories!! My dad was career Army and we lived there 81'- 84'. My brother and I were 7 and 8 when we moved there in 81'. We were always involved with something at the DYA.....sports (soccer/football), field trips plus it was a great place for a kid to go and watch movies, play games, etc... And that barber shop?? My dad would send my brother and I down there every couple weeks to get haircuts. $5 for a "regular" haircut!!!

    Thanks for posting!!

  • Thanks for the memories. I did not live in Roman Way housing but I was stationed at the "Rock" with HHB 2/3 FA. I used to walk to and from Butzbach from the "Rock" often when I wanted to save taxi fare, just so I could buy a couple extra biers...lol...1987-1990. I used to walk through this area on the way to Butzbach....Thank you, Thank you

I have great, no, the BEST memories of Germany. I lived in Butzbach from 87-91. My dad was stationed in Frankfurt and Friedberg both. I am sending this video out to all my school contacts. Thanks for the walk down memory lane. Cindi

  • Tell me about it, I was in Schweinfurt from 03/99 to 04/02. Luckily I was in Essouhulf housing, how ever the hell you spell it. I feel for you, me and my wife us to visit friends there and they didn't like it.

  • Thank you for the walk down memory lane, lived wit the family in roman way housing from Oct 2001 'till July 17 2007. We were one of the last families to leave the housing area. Tears are clouding my eyes. :{

  • I lived here from 2003 to 2007 i was moved out when it closed so i have to finish my senior year in a different school. I really miss it there man all my friends were so close adn it was right next to town where we could go to the carnivals and fests 'sigh' farewell Butzbach... old friend.

  • I lived here in the early 70's. So many memories of butzbach elementary. Ping pong at the youth center. Football, baseball and first GFs. Thanks for posting these.

  • I lived here from 1991-1994. Building 6513 (I think), Apt. 6-D. Went to Butzbach Elementary, Giessen Middle and Giessen High Schools.

I spent a lot of time at the basketball court, the Youth Center and the Shoppette. There was also a skateboard ramp behind the basketball court.

It's sad to see the old housing area deserted like this. And it brings back so many memories. I had wondered if this was still in operation.

    Thanks for the memories.

  • Oh those little Mail boxes. I delivered Stars and Stripes and always cut my hands up pushing papers into the boxes.

The AYA was a DYA in 1986 with the Shoppette around the corner. I guess they turned it inot a video shop after I left Roman Way. Taht loading area for the Shoppete was the main entrance when I was there.

Played little league ball on that field and set off fireworks for the 4th. That basketball court was there in '86.
