just wikipedia: On 7 June 1958 a bomb exploded at the entrance of the Turkish Embassy in Cyprus. Following the bombing Turkish Cypriots looted Greek Cypriot properties. On June 26, 1984 the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktaş, admitted on British channel ITV that the bomb was placed by the Turks themselves in order to create tension
@ge0rgi0 How ironic that you only wrote about events where T Cypriots did something bad to G Cypriots. In your next post, are you going to copy and paste things the G Cypriots did to the T Cypriots? I certainly hope so, otherwise we are back at the stage where you are simply being biased and ignoring facts on the matter. It seems there is not much point in having a conversation about these things with Greek people, they are far to biased and brainwashed by their educational system and media.
@KoivuTheHab Don't expect me to defend your point of view, the only thing I can do is expose to you the historical facts that I am aware of.At some parts of the conversation I have admitted that not everything was perfect neither with the Byzantines nor the greeks. But I also mention specific events. How come and I found so many events throughout history, & there have not been similar events from you?Maybe all these atrocities are no coincidence? What can humanity expect from Turks next?
@ge0rgi0 So you admit that you have learned and only know of all the negative points of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey and only the positive aspects of teh Byzantine Empire and Greeks. Somehow this doesn't surprise me at all. This is why this discussion started in the first place, because you choose to ignore all facts that aren't positive for Greece. If you read below you will find plenty of events from both sides but we know more about recent history than ancient history naturally and the -->
@ge0rgi0 Ottomans were dominant in fairly recent history so it is very well documented. I think we can expect the same from the Turks as we have for a long time, economical growth, friendship and above all peace. From Greece we can expect the same things except in terms of economy. Turks and Greeks are very similar people, one could say they are almost identical culturally. The only difference is religion which still leads to the exact same actions in modern society.
@ge0rgi0 Another thing about Byzantine times, I'm sure you don't expect there to be a lot of documented writings about negative things the Byzantines did. Occupied territories in those times were not advanced, even among Greeks only the elite could read and write, so quite obviously very little negative documentation that can be proved. The only thing frowned upon by some is the widespread homosexuality and sodomy. Documented simply because it was normal and widespread.
@KoivuTheHab i provided you with tens of facts, many of them with dates, and a genocide. you responded with excuses and not specific events.Still, ignoring that the renaissance was also fueled by Greek intellectuals and the enslaved Greece was held in the dark during that era, you only say vague things about the earlier byzantines, a proto-medieval empire, ignoring our immense contribution to world's and europe's culture on purpose. The main difference is culture and ethos, not religion.
@ge0rgi0 Homosexuality and sodomy is a very divided question even in modern societies, I don't condemn it myself. However in terms of population in those times, both reproduction and health wise, could have presented a significant problem. Also the Christian view is exactly the same as the Islamic and nazi view. I have provided you with endless facts, you simply don't believe what all other historians agree with. Once again you need to remember there is less evidence from 3000 years ago than 300
@ge0rgi0 I have never ignored the fact that the Byzantine Empire had an impact on European culture and modern society, you are simply putting words in my mouth. At last you have finally admitted that you have a biased view as a Greek, do remember that I represent the neutral view as I don't have a connection to either country. I am not sure what makes you think that someone neutral would blindly see the Greek point of view? It's like studying only one part of history and being biased about it.
@KoivuTheHab I admit that i have a biased view, did i say otherwise?I just look at the recorded facts to support my side. That is the proper way to support your opinion when you are biased, so that you don't reproduce wrong information based on your feelings. Respond to these facts with others if you can.And no you are not obliged to support the Greeks, but you seem to be biased if you support the Turks without evidence.
@ge0rgi0 I have represented plenty of evidence. There was not more recorded in 500BC than in 1800s, this is a silly statement. Also in 500BC only a select few recorded history, in 1800s it was the whole world. It's foolish to claim that that the culture in ancient Greece was 'higher' than in the Ottoman Empire, ancient Greece not surprisingly had a much simpler culture. There is 100 times more documents from the Ottoman times for various reasons.
@KoivuTheHab I disagree completely, if you would have been raised in the Ottoman Empire you would have been free and educated. The Jizya was abolished in the 1850s, not long after Greece was granted independence. The education system was always at a very high standard in the Ottoman Empire. In the 1800s you would have had every chance to thrive in this community, infact more so than almost any other country on the planet. Freedom of press and elections have been around for a long time -->
@KoivuTheHab Also, an interesting fact you should look into is that there may be as much or even more recording of history in 500BC as in 1800.Keeping history is also subject to the culture of the people. And for the ottoman case the culture was lower than ancient Greece, so history was recorded less.
@KoivuTheHab Also, I am not a religious person myself but I have to recognise that I owe to that imperfect christian religion, the freedom of 1821. Religion keeps peoples divided as a whole but united nationwise-culturally. I m glad I wasnt brought up in an unfree and uneducated ottoman empire. I would not have the freedom to let my mind grow as I have in Greece. As you know freedom of press and proper elections are a phenomenon or the recent ~10 years in turkey.
@ge0rgi0 The only thing that has been restricting media is the silly 'insulting Turkishness' law. As far as press goes it's actually quite irrelevant. It's quite funny how in your mind the Ottoman Empire was like a prison when infact it was a thriving community with many different nationalities and a great empire in many ways. Most of these countries had a higher standard of living than they would have had in a free country. Naturally most would prefer a free country but that isn't the point.
@KoivuTheHab in what way "missing" the renaissance could result in the best education worldwide? And how can there be more Greeks famous as Renaissance contributors than inside the ottoman empire, if there was freedom? Name one Greek who excelled in any cultural aspect from inside the ottoman empire. Turkey of 1900 onwards was a military - governed state!! There is one thing distorting history man, but naming black as white is a harmful practice...
@KoivuTheHab Accepting homosexuality is considered to be more civilised behavior than the islam/nazi approach, and still, these were different times, for example prostitutes in ancient Greece were highly educated and respected people. I think you are the biased one since you say you are not a greek or a turk and still you refuse to see the greek point of view. Me being greek i am justified to have a biased opinion, and to defend my name.
and if you think this is all past, I inform you that the violent and barbarian nature of the Turks came on surface again the last 100 years. Do some research about events like the instabul pogrom, the methods used to tear apart cyprus, the marches on desert which caused what is today called the armenian and pontic genocide, burning of smyrna.
@ge0rgi0 I am familiar with history and I know of all these events you mentioned. The pogrom in Istanbul was a lie triggered by corrupt and greedy politicians for personal gain and ideals. It was falsely reported that Atatürks house where he was born on the Greek side had been bombed and destroyed, it is childish to put blame on the general population for the acts that followed. The Cyprus issue is a two sided story, like the UN said the intervension itself was legal but the occupation that -->
the romans clapped yes because the byzantine empire was the right part of the roman empire which had 1)mostly greek peoples, as it was centered on the greek-populated balkan peninsula and greek-populated asia minor 2)greek culture, 3)orthodox religion. It was a homogenous empire. An old-fashioned empire. You could use that card for alexander's empire though. But that was in fact really tolerant to the peoples it contained.
Why do you keep saying ''you''? I'm a Finnish man and an Atheist who is interested in history, theology and politics. I'm not putting words in your mouth, those were your exact words that I repeated: ''the most beautiful greek women were taken and raped''. It's an outrageous claim that all the most beautiful women from occupied territories were all suddenly made into sex slaves for the wealthy. Yes the Janissary were made up of males from occupied areas and also converted, Janissary Infantry --^
Ataturk was as Aryan White European with Blond Hair & Blue Eyes, he wore the Great German Iron Cross & fought on Germany's side! Long live the German Empire & her Allies! @Psychontinos13 I think you live at UK and therefore your texts makes me sure that you are a quer, I mean HOMO...Secondly, we didn't conquer a village where there was no army..Read the history first of all..It is your mistake und failure if you couldn't get support from others..what can we do? You had enough time hehehe...Why don't u try the same today and get it back....if you can come of course to ISTANBUL heheheh..You are like a child..Go work and earn money; otherwise u gonna starve
@Gitanes1972 too bad for you I live in Greece andask your mom about who's really a homo..And to let you know everyone supports Greece..Germans and Turkians cannot accept their EPIC failure against Greece so that's why you're so jealus faggots..And don't think that all Greece has homo's just because in our TV realities and shows are all homos..and you have to check ge0rgi0's comment below so that I don't copy-paste and say the same things..So now what you should do is..SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU FAGGOT
@Psychontinos13 Germans and Turks can't accept their epic failiure against Greeks? Are you from planet Mars? Have you ever heard of World War I ? With comments like those I guess you were fingering your asshole when they tried to teach you modern history in elementary school... Well done my friend...
@Psychontinos13 In the aftermath of WW1 Greece lost a lot of land to Turkey and 10s of thousands of Greeks died. Greece was also occupied by Germany in WW2. Perhaps you should stop making retarded comments? Come out of you shell and stop dreaming, Greek campains in the world wars were a catastrophe. It's about time you face facts.
@KoivuTheHab I agree to the fact that we were occupied in WW2 by Germans but then don't forget how we kicked their asses not only the Germans but the Italians too..!
And a comment about your stupid comment on the Greek campaigns..Give me a name that did what Alexander did, ALONE!!
@KoivuTheHab yes modern history..When you conquered Κωνσταντινούπολη it was 1453..It's not modern history it's medieval..and since then you did no campaign so shut up..
@Psychontinos13 What do you mean ''you''?... My people never went further south than Karelia... You were speaking about Alexander, compared to that it is modern history. What exactly do you mean there was no campaign after this? The Ottomans went on to conquer Hungary and reached Wien (Vienna). There couldn't be any more campaigns against Greeks as they were already part of the Ottoman empire all the way until 1830, Constantinople was the last stronghold.

If u ever had a leader like Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, you wouldn't be whining like this. Small country, limited agriculture, shitty economy, full of hatred with agony, I know life must be tough for you. I don't have anything against greeks but bitches like the ones here who puts and supports that placard is just a bad example for their own country. NE MUTLU TURKUM DIYENE!
@curzer1 are u serious?? u are a turk and u talk about shitty economy? right this very moment Greece is 29th economy in the world and turkey is 72nd! a Greek produces 3 times more than the average turk..1/3 of the turkish population lives under extreme poverty levels and basically turkey is a 3rd world country trying desperately to pass out as a ''western country'' begging to enter EU...we had many leaders better than Kemal during our history...from Alex the Great till Kolokotronis...
@curzer1 btw i piss, shit , vomit and spit on Gaymal Atajew's grave..he would have done NOTHING against the Greek army marching till ankara in ww1 if he hadnt help from the Soviets and the Germans....FACT
@ElectraofMaced0n Your piss, shit, vomit and spit doesn't worth a penny anymore. you are nothing but a bankrupt country which doesn't even have a medical support for their cancer patients. All the world sees how desperate your country r for money. There will be no greece left in 5 years from now on. I bet you guys will beg to come to turkey. Also your history has gay leaders who just wanted more dick in their asses.
@curzer1 oh really??name me a Greek gay leader?Alexander the Great had a wife and a son unlike ur Gaymal atafag who was an alcoholic piece of shit who fancied Greek fishermen..the ottoman secret services knew that..as for our country..well turkey NEEDS DECADES to reach ''bankrupt' Greece's economy..u see today Greece has 27K per capita and turkey has 12K per capita...turkey is a joke and 1/3 of ur population lives under poverty levels..even Bulgaria is richer than turkey JUST LOL @ U LOSERS :)
@ratzP now u guys started to burn your own country, what a shame. even u don't have a proper medical supply for your cancer patients...very sad. you guys r going down really fast and when euro collapse u will all be poorer. letting u guys in eu was only a political decision anyway, never deserved it. I hope good citizens of greek will remain in peace and prosper. But bitches like you my friend can suck my turkish cock and feed my seeds to your family.

Anal sex is internationally understood as greek style. YOU WISH TURKS WERE GAY YOU FAGGOT. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, may God rest his sole really distroyed your hopes and dreams of having an anal orientated constantinople, You are lucky you still have greece. The Turks must have smelt your shit driping dicks there and left greece to you.
@ercamemin you speak about constantinople like you own it or something... dont forget the we founded it 2500 yrs ago, when your people were in mongolia (no democracy, no culture, no language, in other words, monkeys) ... no matter how much you try to change it, you can never change history, sons of nomad mercenaries and thieves. All the crap of that time, united together to create turkey.
@ge0rgi0 You speak a lot of crap little boy, Democracy is a very new term and ideology, pleace don't mention it related to ancient times 2500 years ago, it honestly makes you sound like a retard. Also it's not called Constantinople, it's called Istanbul, there have been over 10 names in history for this city but now it's called Istanbul, end of story. Yes Istanbul is owned by Turkey and it's people, it's a simple fact. You should open a history book sometime and read about empires of the world.
@KoivuTheHab democracy is a very old term, it comes from ancient greece 500years BC! it is the essential political system that suggests people have equal rights. maybe there have been modernisations but the basic idea remains. byzantium was an ancient greek settlement that changed name to the emperors name Constantinople only when it became the capital of the roman empire. istanbul is a name used ... less than 90 years.
@ge0rgi0 The name Istanbul was been used for hundreds of years, possibly a thousand years in different forms. It became the official name for the city in 1923.
@KoivuTheHab yes it was used. It was used by everybody in byzantium because it is a greek phrase. "is tin Polin" = "to the City" but the city's name is constantinouPoli or Poli. Istanbul is a stupid name, its like calling Ankara , "istinankira" or "istanankara"
@ge0rgi0 Yes I know this, I'm well versed in the art of history. The citys name is Istanbul. The moment the Turks made this the official name of the city the city is called Istanbul and all other names are simply history and nothing more. If someone finds the name stupid it's irrelevant, there are a lot of strange and funny names out there, Istanbul isn't one of them.
@KoivuTheHab Live in the city you conquered. Also you can use a symbol you like as a flag. But you cannot remove the city's glorious history, or the symbol's original meaning. A name is the way to be remembered.
Respect a glorious 2500 year old city with its glorious name. you disrespect that city if you are trying to make people forget that name. That is history's unwritten rule.
@ge0rgi0 History can't be changed, however names can be charged and that is exactly what they have done. How can this be so difficult to understand? Thousands upon thousands of places around the world have changed names, whole nations have changed names. Since when is changing the name of a city in any way or form strange? Constantinople is the past and it's history, Istanbul is the present and the only formal and proper name to call the city. It's time for you to face facts and move on.
@KoivuTheHab whatever, man. you can choose to face the historical weight of a place or try to forget it. That is the proper way for you. Remove the cross on top of a church and make it a mosque, change names of cities, invent history acoording to your interests, those things are fair play in the history of mankind. Keep it up.
@ge0rgi0 This has nothing to do with trying to forget history, or inventing history (which is impossible mind you). Don't let your biased view get in the way of things, changing a simple name has nothing to do with forgetting history, it also has nothing to do with converting a church. I'll also have you know that yes, in the history of mankind those things you mentioned are very common. Don't confuse ''historical weight'' with a simple name.
@KoivuTheHab If there is war between two countries, any kind of unethical action can happen. But it is in the peoples to show their true virtue at such extreme times. You can be victorious and after the battle show respect. This, the Turks need to learn. During the last century they performed unspeakable crimes. To humanity, not specifically greeks or armenians, etc.
@ge0rgi0 False, during Ottoman conquests after cities fell the people were allowed to live and were allowed to keep their faith. Something that was not common in those times, if anything Ottomans were infact more respectful than the other powers of the era. It is easy to proclaim that the last century Turks have performed unspeakable crimes, but so has everyone else in two World Wars. How this has anything to do with the fact that today Istanbul is infact called just that I do not know.
@KoivuTheHab Maybe they were allowed at the beginning, but the most beautiful greek women were taken and raped and the strongest of every 5 greek kids was taken to become yunan ceri.
All the irrelevant things I say move around the same idea, so I'll just say it. You are barbarians, we are civilised. That explains everything. I dont know about all the others in world wars.. I know about greece turkey and the nazis. greece was civilised as always. turks first and nazis later commited genocides.
@ge0rgi0 If you think the most beautiful Greek women were all raped you are brainwashed by propaganda. A small portion of male non muslims were recruited (often forcibly but at times families even bribed scouts to take them) from their families to become bodyguards and elite military(Janissary) for the Sultan. Greeks like all others were allowed to keep their faith, it was not just ''at the beginning''. I am not a barbarian, my country has never attacked or occupied a country in it's history.
@KoivuTheHab if you were the pasha which would you pick? the ugliest? and i didnt say all,, dont play with words. Janissaries were the most important unit and it was formed strictly by NON-muslims which were converted.. You tolerated other religions so much that the day of Easter you hanged the head of our church, Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople. And of course every inch of your territory is on the old byzantine grounds. Attacked and Occupied.
@ge0rgi0 They were also paid for this service and they belonged to the high class of the society, this is why many also wanted to become Janissary. It's funny how you talk about attacking and occupying with such a condemned tongue. Did you forget the history of the Byzantine Empire? Do you think the Romans clapped when your army walked into town? Did the Arabs clap and hail you as heroes as you claimed their land? You have done exactly the same thing, it's about time you look in the mirror.
@KoivuTheHab you are finnish but you also are making suspicious mistakes("A small portion of male non muslims were recruited ","my country has never attacked or occupied",religious tolerance-with heavy conversion and killing of priests-,"Polis has changed 10 names","todays democracy is irrelevant to the ancient greek"). In my phrase about greek women you added "all" to distort its meaning. Try learning history better.
@ge0rgi0 Those are all facts that you stated with the exception of ''heavy conversion''. There are no other mistakes there. In the case of the women it's exactly the same amount of women we are talking about ''the most beautiful women'' and ''all the most beautiful women''. If 10% of the women are considered the most beautiful, it's still the same exact 10% when they are all included. You should stop making accusations of other nations when your country has infact done exactly the same.
@KoivuTheHab In a 16.000 population medium size city of that time maybe 10% of the eligible females (lets say 5.000 are the women 18-38), we have 500 women. are they enough to feed the pasha and the turkish officers? Ali Pasha of ioannina had 300 women in his harem.
@ge0rgi0 10% was an example figure so that even you could understand we were talking about the same amount. Slavery was a trade in the Ottoman Empire it was also widespread in the rest of the civilized world. To claim that a large procentage of women were simply rounded up for brothels and military commanders simply proves you have very little knowledge of the subject in question. Infact the majority of the Sultans and high ranking officers women were gifts(slaves) from vassals and other nations
@KoivuTheHab dont overanalyse it man. ali pasha is a good example of my point. most of the women were stolen from the nearby Greek villages. He rules a region, he likes a woman he sees and he takes her. dont mix slavery and politics. In fact I dont know much about it and at such a recent time in history. It was mainly a practise of the less civilised. There were no ships with women slaves arriving for each local administrator.
@ge0rgi0 Women(mostly men) were for the large part taken as slaves in raids in North Africa, usually not even by Ottomans but they were often sold to large cities in the Ottoman Empire as this fetched the highest price. I don't think you understand much about the slave system in Ottoman times, slaves went on to become Janissary, even pashas. The Sultans children had mothers that were in fact slaves and some of them had tremendous power. Slavery and politics walk the exact same road here, notice?
I am not sure why you wish to constantly talk about female slaves as infact most of the slaves were men for labour as in all other countries. Also slavery was widespread globally, it's not civilized but that's history, for many countries recent history just look at the USA for example. There were plently of ships with female slaves, I notice you know very little about this subject too. Most female slaves were taken from Africa and the Middle East as they were considered more beautiful.
@KoivuTheHab so about the greek element in areas right &south of asia minor.I just said that, since the macedonians there was a strong greek element there. Hellenistic Koine language & influence from the greek rulers. 2nd the romans: Greek a second language for intellectuals & trade language. 3rd the byzantines. It's continuous presence of the greek element for 1300 years. Not claiming they were Byzantines but they were not radically changing the culture of Byzantium when they were conquered.
@ge0rgi0 There were plenty of other ethnicities in the Balkans, you make it sound like you think the only people living there were Greek, Byzantine occupied territory from Slavic people (mainly Bulgars but not limited to them alone) and Hungarians, and this is only the Balkans! There were plenty of other territories that were fought for at different times of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine also converted plenty of people, including Pagans and Shamans. You also had slaves mind you.
@KoivuTheHab balcans and asia minor were totally Greek since alexander and through roman conquest, so that is a Greek empire right there. About women in harems, I just think that nowadays turks look european for a reason, and mating with african or arab women would not have this result. In ali pasha's example, the majority of women were Greek. for the other I maybe need to read some facts, ok. But Ali Pasha was a pretty representative example.
@ge0rgi0 The Turks have some mixed blood due to their rich history, most of them easily pass as European on most of the continent, is some places they may even look more European than most. I think this is largely due to the fact that they are related to the Europeans in the first place originally. It's not like the population of Ottomans ran around brothels with exotic women, only select members of the overclass did this. Just like me (blonde hair and blue eyes) my race originates from Asia
@KoivuTheHab Occupied Slavic areas? the descending of the slavs from present day russia to the balkans is well known. How is defending your land to an invader occupation? That is some fine history you are putting out. Does it come from the same sources who say that janissaries included "a few" non-muslims? Or from the ones who say that a genocide never occured? And how did you originate from europe? Here in Greece we kept history since 800 BC you know, and we recorded our neighbours also.
@ge0rgi0 The Slavs settled in areas in parts of the Balkans a few hundred AD, yes they were later occupied by the Byzantine Empire. Byzantines did not have control over all of the Balkans in these very early times, they simply conquered and made it their own later, yes indeed it was occupation not self defense. Janissaries were ONLY non muslims recruits, but all muslims. What makes you think that because you have kept history from 800BC it is ok for you to occupy others land but not vice versa?
@ge0rgi0 I did not originate from Europe, I already told you this. I am Finnish and we belong to the same culture and language group as Hungary and Estonia. We came from beyond the Ural mountains thousands of years ago. Janissarys had power because of Ottoman hierarchy, there were millions of Turks, surely you cannot claim '' there were not enough of them to hold positions'' Ottomans sometimes married other cultures, but this was quite rare, only the elite very often did this. Learn history...
@KoivuTheHab The janissaries started having powerful positions in the ott emp. because the Turks were not enough to hold the positions needed. Also they started mixing and mating with the European peoples (not only byzantines). It is both the logical explanation and the historically recorded. You were not europeans who migrated to mongolia, started having mongolian eyes and the came back and in a few years your characterics changed to european again. This is historical alchemy.
@ge0rgi0 As is common practise still today, different cultures often lived in different parts of the city, jews muslims and christians in own quarters for the most part. This is historically recorded, NOT that all cultures were mixing and having children left and right, that is not called logic, it is called not understanding facts. The Finno-Ugric people did not migrate from Mongolia... Thus we do not look like Asians, this is infact very logical. You really need to start reading some books...
@KoivuTheHab I dont speak about finland, ok. I thought you were finnish and turk. this keeps happening at the conversation so apply the arguments to this. sorry. Bulgarians laid foot on Greek soil at the late 800s and the area was constantly at war until the late 900s when they were kicked out. if that is the definition of occupation of another mans land. then every country is occupying another's land. Greeks inhabited continuously this area for 3000 years. In 100-200 years it didnt become slavic
@ge0rgi0 The Slavs were there much earlier than the late 800s, Slavs were also north east of the Balkans, these areas were also occupied by Byzantine at times. The Byzantines also conqured pretty much all of the Middle East, North Africa and also some land in Anatolia that wasn't theirs nor Greek. You need to stop being ignorant and stop pretending that Byzantine never attacked, occupied, hurt or enslaved anyone in their history while everyone else supposedly ran around attacking and raping.
@KoivuTheHab About Slavs in Balkans I was specific in the Greek land. In balkans they were earlier, but northernmost. I dont think Byzantines were saints at all. My only problem is the effort from the ottoman side to delete a people, through the methods I explained to you earlier. You know byzantium was the border of europe and western culture. Arab hordes, Slavic hordes, Crusaders, Ottomans hordes, Pirates. Why would you support anyone who tried to raid europe? It happened. Any benefit?
@ge0rgi0 They didn't delete people, people were allowed to keep their culture and faith, unlike in many other cases of occupation, including many recent cases (including also the West). Look at all the countries and cultures that are in the ex Ottoman area, this is living proof of that. This isn't about support one way or the other, this isn't an ongoing political issue or debate, it is simply history. It's irrelevant if actions 500 years ago have 'support' in modern times.
@KoivuTheHab Christianity was also accepted as the religion of the area inhabitants. Dont forget they settled on top of an existing homogenous orthodox greek speaking area. They could not make it suddenly disappear or kill everyone. What they could do and did was slowly kill it. They gave lower taxes to the muslims, they recruited the strongest of 5 kids each year and converted him to muslim. Greek language was not teached but by orthodox priests during "secret school" sessions.
@ge0rgi0 Once again I am not sure why you are bringing these things up when they had already been done by the Byzantines and countless other nations and Empires. Religion and religious propaganda is something always pressed (physically or otherwise) upon occupied civilians, throughout history often civilians had to choose between death or converting. This includes Christianity using pressure in many different forms for conversion. If anything the Ottomans were humane in this particular sense.
@ge0rgi0 followed was illegal. However since the Annan Peace Plan when there was a vote and the south side was the only one to vote against a unification in my eyes they have lost any legit right to claim the northern part. They could have had a united Cyprus but they did not want it, it was their choice. Who caused the fire of Smyrna is unknown, also do not forget that it was Greece that attacked and pushed into Anatolia occupying land after given land by the Great Powers. Don't get confused.

just wikipedia: On 7 June 1958 a bomb exploded at the entrance of the Turkish Embassy in Cyprus. Following the bombing Turkish Cypriots looted Greek Cypriot properties. On June 26, 1984 the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktaş, admitted on British channel ITV that the bomb was placed by the Turks themselves in order to create tension
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 How ironic that you only wrote about events where T Cypriots did something bad to G Cypriots. In your next post, are you going to copy and paste things the G Cypriots did to the T Cypriots? I certainly hope so, otherwise we are back at the stage where you are simply being biased and ignoring facts on the matter. It seems there is not much point in having a conversation about these things with Greek people, they are far to biased and brainwashed by their educational system and media.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab Don't expect me to defend your point of view, the only thing I can do is expose to you the historical facts that I am aware of.At some parts of the conversation I have admitted that not everything was perfect neither with the Byzantines nor the greeks. But I also mention specific events. How come and I found so many events throughout history, & there have not been similar events from you?Maybe all these atrocities are no coincidence? What can humanity expect from Turks next?
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 So you admit that you have learned and only know of all the negative points of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey and only the positive aspects of teh Byzantine Empire and Greeks. Somehow this doesn't surprise me at all. This is why this discussion started in the first place, because you choose to ignore all facts that aren't positive for Greece. If you read below you will find plenty of events from both sides but we know more about recent history than ancient history naturally and the -->
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 Ottomans were dominant in fairly recent history so it is very well documented. I think we can expect the same from the Turks as we have for a long time, economical growth, friendship and above all peace. From Greece we can expect the same things except in terms of economy. Turks and Greeks are very similar people, one could say they are almost identical culturally. The only difference is religion which still leads to the exact same actions in modern society.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 Another thing about Byzantine times, I'm sure you don't expect there to be a lot of documented writings about negative things the Byzantines did. Occupied territories in those times were not advanced, even among Greeks only the elite could read and write, so quite obviously very little negative documentation that can be proved. The only thing frowned upon by some is the widespread homosexuality and sodomy. Documented simply because it was normal and widespread.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab i provided you with tens of facts, many of them with dates, and a genocide. you responded with excuses and not specific events.Still, ignoring that the renaissance was also fueled by Greek intellectuals and the enslaved Greece was held in the dark during that era, you only say vague things about the earlier byzantines, a proto-medieval empire, ignoring our immense contribution to world's and europe's culture on purpose. The main difference is culture and ethos, not religion.
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 Homosexuality and sodomy is a very divided question even in modern societies, I don't condemn it myself. However in terms of population in those times, both reproduction and health wise, could have presented a significant problem. Also the Christian view is exactly the same as the Islamic and nazi view. I have provided you with endless facts, you simply don't believe what all other historians agree with. Once again you need to remember there is less evidence from 3000 years ago than 300
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 I have never ignored the fact that the Byzantine Empire had an impact on European culture and modern society, you are simply putting words in my mouth. At last you have finally admitted that you have a biased view as a Greek, do remember that I represent the neutral view as I don't have a connection to either country. I am not sure what makes you think that someone neutral would blindly see the Greek point of view? It's like studying only one part of history and being biased about it.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab I admit that i have a biased view, did i say otherwise?I just look at the recorded facts to support my side. That is the proper way to support your opinion when you are biased, so that you don't reproduce wrong information based on your feelings. Respond to these facts with others if you can.And no you are not obliged to support the Greeks, but you seem to be biased if you support the Turks without evidence.
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 I have represented plenty of evidence. There was not more recorded in 500BC than in 1800s, this is a silly statement. Also in 500BC only a select few recorded history, in 1800s it was the whole world. It's foolish to claim that that the culture in ancient Greece was 'higher' than in the Ottoman Empire, ancient Greece not surprisingly had a much simpler culture. There is 100 times more documents from the Ottoman times for various reasons.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab I disagree completely, if you would have been raised in the Ottoman Empire you would have been free and educated. The Jizya was abolished in the 1850s, not long after Greece was granted independence. The education system was always at a very high standard in the Ottoman Empire. In the 1800s you would have had every chance to thrive in this community, infact more so than almost any other country on the planet. Freedom of press and elections have been around for a long time -->
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab Also, an interesting fact you should look into is that there may be as much or even more recording of history in 500BC as in 1800.Keeping history is also subject to the culture of the people. And for the ottoman case the culture was lower than ancient Greece, so history was recorded less.
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab Also, I am not a religious person myself but I have to recognise that I owe to that imperfect christian religion, the freedom of 1821. Religion keeps peoples divided as a whole but united nationwise-culturally. I m glad I wasnt brought up in an unfree and uneducated ottoman empire. I would not have the freedom to let my mind grow as I have in Greece. As you know freedom of press and proper elections are a phenomenon or the recent ~10 years in turkey.
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 The only thing that has been restricting media is the silly 'insulting Turkishness' law. As far as press goes it's actually quite irrelevant. It's quite funny how in your mind the Ottoman Empire was like a prison when infact it was a thriving community with many different nationalities and a great empire in many ways. Most of these countries had a higher standard of living than they would have had in a free country. Naturally most would prefer a free country but that isn't the point.
KoivuTheHab 1 month ago
@KoivuTheHab in what way "missing" the renaissance could result in the best education worldwide? And how can there be more Greeks famous as Renaissance contributors than inside the ottoman empire, if there was freedom? Name one Greek who excelled in any cultural aspect from inside the ottoman empire. Turkey of 1900 onwards was a military - governed state!! There is one thing distorting history man, but naming black as white is a harmful practice...
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
@ge0rgi0 So is naming white as black. I'm done wasting my time here, some people are simply too brainwashed to listen to reason.

@KoivuTheHab maybe the historical events are brainwashed also. Have fun in your life and keep learning history!

ge0rgi0 6 days ago
@KoivuTheHab Accepting homosexuality is considered to be more civilised behavior than the islam/nazi approach, and still, these were different times, for example prostitutes in ancient Greece were highly educated and respected people. I think you are the biased one since you say you are not a greek or a turk and still you refuse to see the greek point of view. Me being greek i am justified to have a biased opinion, and to defend my name.
ge0rgi0 1 month ago
and if you think this is all past, I inform you that the violent and barbarian nature of the Turks came on surface again the last 100 years. Do some research about events like the instabul pogrom, the methods used to tear apart cyprus, the marches on desert which caused what is today called the armenian and pontic genocide, burning of smyrna.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 I am familiar with history and I know of all these events you mentioned. The pogrom in Istanbul was a lie triggered by corrupt and greedy politicians for personal gain and ideals. It was falsely reported that Atatürks house where he was born on the Greek side had been bombed and destroyed, it is childish to put blame on the general population for the acts that followed. The Cyprus issue is a two sided story, like the UN said the intervension itself was legal but the occupation that -->
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
the romans clapped yes because the byzantine empire was the right part of the roman empire which had 1)mostly greek peoples, as it was centered on the greek-populated balkan peninsula and greek-populated asia minor 2)greek culture, 3)orthodox religion. It was a homogenous empire. An old-fashioned empire. You could use that card for alexander's empire though. But that was in fact really tolerant to the peoples it contained.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
Why do you keep saying ''you''? I'm a Finnish man and an Atheist who is interested in history, theology and politics. I'm not putting words in your mouth, those were your exact words that I repeated: ''the most beautiful greek women were taken and raped''. It's an outrageous claim that all the most beautiful women from occupied territories were all suddenly made into sex slaves for the wealthy. Yes the Janissary were made up of males from occupied areas and also converted, Janissary Infantry --^

All the crap of that time, united together to create turkey.
ge0rgi0 10 months ago 8
@ge0rgi0 You speak a lot of crap little boy, Democracy is a very new term and ideology, pleace don't mention it related to ancient times 2500 years ago, it honestly makes you sound like a retard. Also it's not called Constantinople, it's called Istanbul, there have been over 10 names in history for this city but now it's called Istanbul, end of story. Yes Istanbul is owned by Turkey and it's people, it's a simple fact. You should open a history book sometime and read about empires of the world.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab democracy is a very old term, it comes from ancient greece 500years BC! it is the essential political system that suggests people have equal rights. maybe there have been modernisations but the basic idea remains. byzantium was an ancient greek settlement that changed name to the emperors name Constantinople only when it became the capital of the roman empire. istanbul is a name used ... less than 90 years.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 The name Istanbul was been used for hundreds of years, possibly a thousand years in different forms. It became the official name for the city in 1923.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab yes it was used. It was used by everybody in byzantium because it is a greek phrase. "is tin Polin" = "to the City" but the city's name is constantinouPoli or Poli. Istanbul is a stupid name, its like calling Ankara , "istinankira" or "istanankara"
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 Yes I know this, I'm well versed in the art of history. The citys name is Istanbul. The moment the Turks made this the official name of the city the city is called Istanbul and all other names are simply history and nothing more. If someone finds the name stupid it's irrelevant, there are a lot of strange and funny names out there, Istanbul isn't one of them.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab Live in the city you conquered. Also you can use a symbol you like as a flag. But you cannot remove the city's glorious history, or the symbol's original meaning. A name is the way to be remembered.
Respect a glorious 2500 year old city with its glorious name. you disrespect that city if you are trying to make people forget that name. That is history's unwritten rule.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 History can't be changed, however names can be charged and that is exactly what they have done. How can this be so difficult to understand? Thousands upon thousands of places around the world have changed names, whole nations have changed names. Since when is changing the name of a city in any way or form strange? Constantinople is the past and it's history, Istanbul is the present and the only formal and proper name to call the city. It's time for you to face facts and move on.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab whatever, man. you can choose to face the historical weight of a place or try to forget it. That is the proper way for you. Remove the cross on top of a church and make it a mosque, change names of cities, invent history acoording to your interests, those things are fair play in the history of mankind. Keep it up.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 This has nothing to do with trying to forget history, or inventing history (which is impossible mind you). Don't let your biased view get in the way of things, changing a simple name has nothing to do with forgetting history, it also has nothing to do with converting a church. I'll also have you know that yes, in the history of mankind those things you mentioned are very common. Don't confuse ''historical weight'' with a simple name.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab If there is war between two countries, any kind of unethical action can happen. But it is in the peoples to show their true virtue at such extreme times. You can be victorious and after the battle show respect. This, the Turks need to learn. During the last century they performed unspeakable crimes. To humanity, not specifically greeks or armenians, etc.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 False, during Ottoman conquests after cities fell the people were allowed to live and were allowed to keep their faith. Something that was not common in those times, if anything Ottomans were infact more respectful than the other powers of the era. It is easy to proclaim that the last century Turks have performed unspeakable crimes, but so has everyone else in two World Wars. How this has anything to do with the fact that today Istanbul is infact called just that I do not know.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab Maybe they were allowed at the beginning, but the most beautiful greek women were taken and raped and the strongest of every 5 greek kids was taken to become yunan ceri.
All the irrelevant things I say move around the same idea, so I'll just say it. You are barbarians, we are civilised. That explains everything. I dont know about all the others in world wars.. I know about greece turkey and the nazis. greece was civilised as always. turks first and nazis later commited genocides.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 If you think the most beautiful Greek women were all raped you are brainwashed by propaganda. A small portion of male non muslims were recruited (often forcibly but at times families even bribed scouts to take them) from their families to become bodyguards and elite military(Janissary) for the Sultan. Greeks like all others were allowed to keep their faith, it was not just ''at the beginning''. I am not a barbarian, my country has never attacked or occupied a country in it's history.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab if you were the pasha which would you pick? the ugliest? and i didnt say all,, dont play with words. Janissaries were the most important unit and it was formed strictly by NON-muslims which were converted.. You tolerated other religions so much that the day of Easter you hanged the head of our church, Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople. And of course every inch of your territory is on the old byzantine grounds. Attacked and Occupied.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 They were also paid for this service and they belonged to the high class of the society, this is why many also wanted to become Janissary. It's funny how you talk about attacking and occupying with such a condemned tongue. Did you forget the history of the Byzantine Empire? Do you think the Romans clapped when your army walked into town? Did the Arabs clap and hail you as heroes as you claimed their land? You have done exactly the same thing, it's about time you look in the mirror.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab you are finnish but you also are making suspicious mistakes("A small portion of male non muslims were recruited ","my country has never attacked or occupied",religious tolerance-with heavy conversion and killing of priests-,"Polis has changed 10 names","todays democracy is irrelevant to the ancient greek"). In my phrase about greek women you added "all" to distort its meaning. Try learning history better.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 Those are all facts that you stated with the exception of ''heavy conversion''. There are no other mistakes there. In the case of the women it's exactly the same amount of women we are talking about ''the most beautiful women'' and ''all the most beautiful women''. If 10% of the women are considered the most beautiful, it's still the same exact 10% when they are all included. You should stop making accusations of other nations when your country has infact done exactly the same.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab In a 16.000 population medium size city of that time maybe 10% of the eligible females (lets say 5.000 are the women 18-38), we have 500 women. are they enough to feed the pasha and the turkish officers? Ali Pasha of ioannina had 300 women in his harem.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 10% was an example figure so that even you could understand we were talking about the same amount. Slavery was a trade in the Ottoman Empire it was also widespread in the rest of the civilized world. To claim that a large procentage of women were simply rounded up for brothels and military commanders simply proves you have very little knowledge of the subject in question. Infact the majority of the Sultans and high ranking officers women were gifts(slaves) from vassals and other nations
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab dont overanalyse it man. ali pasha is a good example of my point. most of the women were stolen from the nearby Greek villages. He rules a region, he likes a woman he sees and he takes her. dont mix slavery and politics. In fact I dont know much about it and at such a recent time in history. It was mainly a practise of the less civilised. There were no ships with women slaves arriving for each local administrator.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 Women(mostly men) were for the large part taken as slaves in raids in North Africa, usually not even by Ottomans but they were often sold to large cities in the Ottoman Empire as this fetched the highest price. I don't think you understand much about the slave system in Ottoman times, slaves went on to become Janissary, even pashas. The Sultans children had mothers that were in fact slaves and some of them had tremendous power. Slavery and politics walk the exact same road here, notice?
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
I am not sure why you wish to constantly talk about female slaves as infact most of the slaves were men for labour as in all other countries. Also slavery was widespread globally, it's not civilized but that's history, for many countries recent history just look at the USA for example. There were plently of ships with female slaves, I notice you know very little about this subject too. Most female slaves were taken from Africa and the Middle East as they were considered more beautiful.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab so about the greek element in areas right &south of asia minor.I just said that, since the macedonians there was a strong greek element there. Hellenistic Koine language & influence from the greek rulers. 2nd the romans: Greek a second language for intellectuals & trade language. 3rd the byzantines. It's continuous presence of the greek element for 1300 years. Not claiming they were Byzantines but they were not radically changing the culture of Byzantium when they were conquered.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 There were plenty of other ethnicities in the Balkans, you make it sound like you think the only people living there were Greek, Byzantine occupied territory from Slavic people (mainly Bulgars but not limited to them alone) and Hungarians, and this is only the Balkans! There were plenty of other territories that were fought for at different times of the Byzantine Empire. The Byzantine also converted plenty of people, including Pagans and Shamans. You also had slaves mind you.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab balcans and asia minor were totally Greek since alexander and through roman conquest, so that is a Greek empire right there. About women in harems, I just think that nowadays turks look european for a reason, and mating with african or arab women would not have this result. In ali pasha's example, the majority of women were Greek. for the other I maybe need to read some facts, ok. But Ali Pasha was a pretty representative example.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 The Turks have some mixed blood due to their rich history, most of them easily pass as European on most of the continent, is some places they may even look more European than most. I think this is largely due to the fact that they are related to the Europeans in the first place originally. It's not like the population of Ottomans ran around brothels with exotic women, only select members of the overclass did this. Just like me (blonde hair and blue eyes) my race originates from Asia
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab Occupied Slavic areas? the descending of the slavs from present day russia to the balkans is well known. How is defending your land to an invader occupation? That is some fine history you are putting out. Does it come from the same sources who say that janissaries included "a few" non-muslims? Or from the ones who say that a genocide never occured? And how did you originate from europe? Here in Greece we kept history since 800 BC you know, and we recorded our neighbours also.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 The Slavs settled in areas in parts of the Balkans a few hundred AD, yes they were later occupied by the Byzantine Empire. Byzantines did not have control over all of the Balkans in these very early times, they simply conquered and made it their own later, yes indeed it was occupation not self defense. Janissaries were ONLY non muslims recruits, but all muslims. What makes you think that because you have kept history from 800BC it is ok for you to occupy others land but not vice versa?
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 I did not originate from Europe, I already told you this. I am Finnish and we belong to the same culture and language group as Hungary and Estonia. We came from beyond the Ural mountains thousands of years ago. Janissarys had power because of Ottoman hierarchy, there were millions of Turks, surely you cannot claim '' there were not enough of them to hold positions'' Ottomans sometimes married other cultures, but this was quite rare, only the elite very often did this. Learn history...
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab The janissaries started having powerful positions in the ott emp. because the Turks were not enough to hold the positions needed. Also they started mixing and mating with the European peoples (not only byzantines). It is both the logical explanation and the historically recorded. You were not europeans who migrated to mongolia, started having mongolian eyes and the came back and in a few years your characterics changed to european again. This is historical alchemy.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 As is common practise still today, different cultures often lived in different parts of the city, jews muslims and christians in own quarters for the most part. This is historically recorded, NOT that all cultures were mixing and having children left and right, that is not called logic, it is called not understanding facts. The Finno-Ugric people did not migrate from Mongolia... Thus we do not look like Asians, this is infact very logical. You really need to start reading some books...
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab I dont speak about finland, ok. I thought you were finnish and turk. this keeps happening at the conversation so apply the arguments to this. sorry. Bulgarians laid foot on Greek soil at the late 800s and the area was constantly at war until the late 900s when they were kicked out. if that is the definition of occupation of another mans land. then every country is occupying another's land. Greeks inhabited continuously this area for 3000 years. In 100-200 years it didnt become slavic
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 The Slavs were there much earlier than the late 800s, Slavs were also north east of the Balkans, these areas were also occupied by Byzantine at times. The Byzantines also conqured pretty much all of the Middle East, North Africa and also some land in Anatolia that wasn't theirs nor Greek. You need to stop being ignorant and stop pretending that Byzantine never attacked, occupied, hurt or enslaved anyone in their history while everyone else supposedly ran around attacking and raping.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab About Slavs in Balkans I was specific in the Greek land. In balkans they were earlier, but northernmost. I dont think Byzantines were saints at all. My only problem is the effort from the ottoman side to delete a people, through the methods I explained to you earlier. You know byzantium was the border of europe and western culture. Arab hordes, Slavic hordes, Crusaders, Ottomans hordes, Pirates. Why would you support anyone who tried to raid europe? It happened. Any benefit?
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 They didn't delete people, people were allowed to keep their culture and faith, unlike in many other cases of occupation, including many recent cases (including also the West). Look at all the countries and cultures that are in the ex Ottoman area, this is living proof of that. This isn't about support one way or the other, this isn't an ongoing political issue or debate, it is simply history. It's irrelevant if actions 500 years ago have 'support' in modern times.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@KoivuTheHab Christianity was also accepted as the religion of the area inhabitants. Dont forget they settled on top of an existing homogenous orthodox greek speaking area. They could not make it suddenly disappear or kill everyone. What they could do and did was slowly kill it. They gave lower taxes to the muslims, they recruited the strongest of 5 kids each year and converted him to muslim. Greek language was not teached but by orthodox priests during "secret school" sessions.
ge0rgi0 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 Once again I am not sure why you are bringing these things up when they had already been done by the Byzantines and countless other nations and Empires. Religion and religious propaganda is something always pressed (physically or otherwise) upon occupied civilians, throughout history often civilians had to choose between death or converting. This includes Christianity using pressure in many different forms for conversion. If anything the Ottomans were humane in this particular sense.
KoivuTheHab 2 months ago
@ge0rgi0 followed was illegal. However since the Annan Peace Plan when there was a vote and the south side was the only one to vote against a unification in my eyes they have lost any legit right to claim the northern part. They could have had a united Cyprus but they did not want it, it was their choice. Who caused the fire of Smyrna is unknown, also do not forget that it was Greece that attacked and pushed into Anatolia occupying land after given land by the Great Powers. Don't get confused.
