thank you for a great video filled with great energy form the heart.. i just got my tambourine today, meinl, all brass double row jingles, goatskin drumhead... how do you spell the elements you mention? i think i have "doum" correctly spelled, no? thanks again and look forward to practicing... have been playing guitars for 39 years and thought this was a great addition living in Asturias, northern Spain in my great great grandparents villa... Peace
i believe this tambourine is a middle eastern riq. this one is her own model made by remo. supposedly these are decent riqs compared to the other stuff out there because there is supposed to be a lot of junk on the internet
Excellent instruction and playing. Just beautiful.
I have the same drum, but 12" with no handle, and 8 sets of cymbals instead of 5. I love the German Silver cymbals. I think I'm going to get one of these too.
Layne learned the connection between the elements and the strokes from Hamza El Din. It is also in the writing of Hazrat Inayat Khan. Neither of those people are considered new age. But when Layne teaches what she learned from her teachers, you condemn her for being new age. So there you have it, if men of other cultures teach this, it is traditional, spiritual and ancient knowledge. If Layne teaches what her teachers taught her, it is new age poop. Mmmmm.
Layne is a great percussionist, but what really turns me off is attributing different "energies" to different strokes. This is all just new age conceptual b.s. There is enough intrinsic spirituality that spontaneously arises from drumming. It doesn't need this silly overlay of concepts!
actually it's not new age at all. you clearly know nothing about musical history; strokes and notes have always been considered to have mystical properties.
If neither as a percussionist nor as an interested and educated listener you have experienced the varied energies of the different strokes, I wonder to what you attribute the "intrinsic spirituality" of which you speak
Thank you so much for posting this! I bought a tambourine to play at church. After it arrived I was disappointed with the hollow sound. I had no idea you did more than shake a tambourine. LOL So now I'm excited to learn.
Could someone tell me why my tambourine sounds differently in different rooms or out doors?
it sounds differnet in different environments. for the same reason your snare, bass drum, even guitar amp would. that is sound is waves that travel to your ear via the air. different levels of air pressure will affect the waves on it's way to your ear. also you rarely ever hear just the waves that make it straight to your ear. usually the sound bounces off other surfaces in the room thus affecting the texture of the waves before it gets to you.
Hello Layneeeeeeee :0 what a great percussionist! I liked this video so much that I bought this tar-bourine. I will upload a video as soon as I get it in!

She is playing her Remo Signature Riqq.
I have one myself, and they are a very nice instrument, especially for day to day play and for beginners.
The rhythm Layne plays at the end of this is commonly called Malfuf here in the United States.
Threewinds 2 years ago
Actually it is her "Lotus" model, a bit bigger than her Riq and has silver jingles as well as an internal hand hold. Her Riq has brass jingles.
