Mubarack is alive because he resigned rather than resist the uprising. I think the same thing happened in Tunisia. Had Gadaffi gone into exile (like Baby Doc of Haiti or Ida Amin of Uganda) he would likely be alive today. This is also true about Saddam. Had he gone into exile, he would likely still remain alive today.

They gave a similar warning when they showed hundreds of burned corpses of Gaddafi's prisoners strewn across the floor of a warehouse in Tripoli. Atrociities must be seen to be believed.

Yes, sure, you can always list the achievements of dictators, especially if they have oil. Stalin, Mussolini, Hitler, Mao - didn't they do well? (Shame that enemies sometimes spoil the plans), I think you are missing the point. It is not about material 'improvements'. It is about freedom of the human spirit. Scots have known this since the 13th century, I suggest you read about William Wallace and Robert the Bruce. Then maybe you'll get an inkling of what really matters in life.

@brawladdie1 None of those men achieved in 41 years for their people what Gaddafi did for Libyans. This is a simple point of fact. How on earth can you put Gaddafi in the same list as Stalin, Hitler and Mao? These people were mass murderers. Stalin murdered 30 million, Hitler 6 million, more if you hold him responsible for WWII. Mao killed 40 million. Most countries in the world are ruled by one party, or one man. They are not all the same, and you have to distinguish between them.

If you play the numbers game, all you are saying is that, in some cases, the end justifies the means, and that is precisely the philosophical basis that justifies every oppressive dictatorship. If you and others adopted my point of view, no future dictatorship would be able to claim legitimacy. To say that 'most countries in the world are ruled by one party' shows a limited understanding of how complex societies work.

Nevertheless my central point is simple - the Libyan people are worse off now, and will be worse off in the next 41 years than they were in the previous 41 years. NATO has destroyed Libyan infrastructure and murdered hundreds, if not thousands (our media doesn't care). 85 innocent people murdered in the town of Zlitan by NATO. I don't see how anyone could dispute that.

If the ends are a dramatic increase in living standards, and the means involve removing some political freedoms, it is justified. Gaddafi never massacred 'his own people', a shred of evidence is yet to have been presented for this accusation. If you think the Libyan people have been 'freed' by NATO you're not looking at the facts on the ground.

Besides, that's still an argument that material comforts are all that matter. I don't think they've been 'freed' by NATO. I'm not that naive. The freedom bubble will probably burst, but that's now up to the Libyans who have to make choices denied to them under a dictatorship. 'Innocent' people get killed in revolutions, just like wars. Should we stop ousting dictators?

Mahmoud Jibril (PM 5th March - 23rd October) studied and taught at the University of Pittsburgh from 1980 until 1987, then ran a company called 'JTrack'. He worked in Gaddafi's government from 2007, clearly as a Trojan Horse. Since 23rd October its Ali Tarhouni who was flown in from the Uni. of Washington Michael J. Foster School of Business (where he'd been working since 1985), in March. Libya is being run by the US

I'd have thought the real innocents are the thousands who were arrested, tortured and killed by Gaddafi's security forces, more than the unfortunates who have ended up killed in the recent conflict. I recall a charming Saif meeting the Western press in the morning, then standing on a jeep in the evening, brandishing his weapon and urging his supporters to slaughter the 'rats'.

@brawladdie1 The 'rats' were the people trying to overthrow the Libyan government by using machine guns, snipers, handguns, and other stolen army equipment, organised by the CIA and other Western (as well as the Qatari) intelligence services. The State Department said openly that people had been on the ground in Libya for months before this started, just look it up, the Qatari govt. admitted this as well. The UK govt. would behave the exact same way if a coup was attempted here.

Strikes me as strange, however, that Tony Blair embraced Gaddafi so enthusiastically before a Western-inspired coup. I must be missing something subtle in the long-term plan.
