This movie was so popular that after it's theater run in '77, they re-released in '79! (& in the late 90's). I remember seeing it (the re-release) with my step dad when I was 8yo.
Thanks to computers they can make anything look like anything these days. Nothing's really impressive any more. It must have been nice to see something that would blow you away like the first star wars.
Obviously I wasn't being serious, it's actually a joke "Homer Simpson review" of Star Wars Ep 4 in The Simpsons Movie box-set. I thought it was amusing because, first, SpaceBalls is an ugly monstrosity of a movie (Mel Brooks, damn you!) and how could a far superior film like the first Star Wars be a parody of THAT?; and, second, is there a person alive in the Western world today who HASN'T heard of Star Wars?
Hence the joke. I was just trying to be clever, or funny, but certainly NOT serious.
That line brings up one blatant flaw in the movie. How long can you pretend to be a storm trooper when you're not the exact same height as all the mf clones!!?!?
This is not the FIRST Star Wars TV commercial. How could it have been - the announcer (a younger Don LaFontaine!) says "winner of 7 academy awards". So this is the "re-release" of Star Wars shortly after Oscar time.
I remember the FIRST Star Wars TV commercial. It was very short and there were quick cuts of spaceships and a shot of Darth Vader turning his head. It was the VERY FIRST time anyone saw Darth Vader and when you saw him, everyone thought "What the hell was THAT thing?"
I'm guessing this was the 1978 re-release TV spot when Episode IV A New Hope was added.
