I can see why my dad said this song is such a tear-jerker. And exactly why he wouldn't play it yesterday while going through his big list of songs for me. It's really beautiful, but so sad. It really makes me stop and think. It wasn't even long into the song before I started tearing up, and then I just cried for a few seconds. Heck, I still feel like crying. It really sounds to me like he was about at the verge of tears when he was singing, himself.
this song is amazing.i have a little girl, she is seven ,i could not amagine anything happening to her.i have no idea what i would do if anything did happen.to all u dads out their spend as much time with yor daughters as u can.before u know it they r all grown up.u will never get that time back.
man this song is dam good but it sure brings tears to my eyes and im not afraid to admit it. it is a hard one to listen to but it sure makes me realize how important it is to let my little girl know how much i do love her and not just our kids but the ones we love too. tell them all cause it could be our last chance to
As far as I've been led to believe this wasn't written by Ray or Shel but by a lady by the name of Hazel Smith but performed perfectly by Ray. Sorry to add to the controversy.
@paulinesmith44 I didn't he wrote I said it was about his kid, most of their songs were true to their lives and yes Shel or Ray usual wrote the others.
@paulinesmith44 ..Sorry I meant -Just cause it wasn't in the credits doesn't he wasn't a co writer- , I also like to point out they wrote alot stuff when they were stoned and collaborated on many songs and just cause one person was named as the writer mean much with these cause they shared every every their writing. That's a tip on the flower child age communal living and sharing everything ..many a song has been written during jam sessions.
@daylanrayne sorry just a comment i left on another channel someone came back at me and told me rather rigorously that it had nothing to with either ray or Shel, which i had always had the impression it was, but no this woman was adamant it was Hazel Smith. yeah i totally agree about writing stuff while stoned contoversial, but probably the best songs came from those jamming stoned sessions :D .maybe thats where today's 'song writer's' are going wrong..lol
how can anyone dislike this the most heart breaking song ever makes me cry every time i thought i was a hard ass even so i cant stop hitting replay and cring
did his daughter really die ?? wow how can you sing this without breaking up, it's hard enough to listen to !!!!!! R.I.P all those taken way too young xx

I didn't have a year with my little girl only three months and five days. Why can't we have singers like this anymore. K.C. Dr. Hook You are the only one. Where did our music go. Dr. Hook must have took it with him. Maybe he has some for later I sure hope so. The greatest. Would say more but there is nothing left to say he says it ALL.
awesome song and just shows us tht we have to treasure every minute we have with our children and loved ones cause they could be gone tomorrow..i only get home for weekends cause of work but spend alot of time holding and playing with my 6 month old son.. daddy loves you so much nicholas xox
You can even him choke up on these times : 2:16;& 2:17 OMG !!! this is a very sad song.. Note: I never got to meet/ see my daughter to this day & I AM Still LOOKING This Is Not my fault either it is the way the system works ( Meaning Country Welfare) I am Very Sad!! This is so sad. I mean I belive this is a true story. Could you imagine losing your child and having to think about all this. This is what you really have to think about, when you hit your kids how dose it make you feel? Do you feel big and bad? If your the kind not so say I love you much do so because it could be the last. I'm only 14 but listening to this song and oh so many sad stories I heard makes me think when I become a parent.
Some songs says all, be sure to take care of each other and do good in life, we all gone go, some sooner some later, but be sure you go with your heart in one piece
This is misspoohgrl09. to all those that sent me well wishes, i am eternally grateful!! your kind words have indeed given me strength. I know that my baby girl is up in heaven playing on the streets of gold. i have since given birth to a baby boy, and he knows that he has a sister that is an angel in heaven.
songs like this one and "thank God for kids" by the Oak Ridge Boys should make us all be appreciative of the loved ones we have.....and never be ashamed of showing the love because someday ???????
4 years ago today I held my cousins hand, Listening to this song, when she passed, ever since then, i play this song once a day, as a reminder of her. I will always remember her, and will always wish it would have been me instaid
this is a simple, beautiful song. i have a big collection of dr hook and shel siverstien material but don't know this one. anyone know where to get? nice way to end the end a busy day.
ive heard this song for years and his voice is almost unbarable to hear so much pain in it. but what a treasure. true wisdom comes from pain. we all live it. but to lose your darling child makes you wonder just how much wisdom do we need.
you cant help but cry when you hear this....dr hook.......their timeless
I have loved this song since i was a little girl and it made me cry then and now i am a big girl with children of my own and it makes me cry even more.
hi hollie, nice to hear this song again ,its just so sad , more sad as it had real meaning for ray sawyer [who wrote and sang this song, about his daughter whom he lost to the big C .
to write your deepest feelings out is a hard thing for most of us to do and send it to the person we love, but to write this record it and sing it with thousands of people watching must be one hell of a great feeling and such a deep song would have me crying through the whole song if I was there to see them play it. i have seen them three times but not once did ray ever sing this live that I seen. god bless his little girl and god bless ray too. :)
@979708 His(Ray Sawyer) daughter's death is why he wrote the song.. but the poor man hardly sings it any more i think it's clear why , he can never make the end without braking down. So sad..but knowing he's crying while he's singing hurts even more. To the singer/songwriter I'm sorry for your loss. Thats something no parent wants to imagine it's a beautiful song thank you for writing it.
The way that the little girl's faith grows stronger and purer through it all, as the Father is falling apart and crying just rips my heart out. Her faith never wavered and even I was getting more upset with god, as the song goes on. This song says all that needs to be said, so purely, and completely. In pain there is joy, and in joy, you can always find overwhelming pain. From the mouths of babes comes deep wisdom. They'll meet again, in Heaven, Where there is no pain. Hugz n kisses to all! :*(
what a emotiona song for ray to write this and know he lived through this. wow the most simple song's. kind of a 80's nursery ryhmes to me. left me crying. god it can happen to any of us.that's so deep.
to hater38100 I am sorry for your loss and in this day and age no parent should out live their kids some people are stronger than others and i do admire your strength
my 17 year old daughter and I have our rants and raves and this song has made me realise how much I lose if her life was taken from me many thanks to the person that wrote this
For all the years of laughter and joy he brought us with his music, I love Dr. Hook and the rest, for sharing this much pain and heart stopping sadness with us. Thanks to them for reminding us that with joy, there always comes pain, n vise-versa.The tears in his voice say it all. His little girl was MUCH loved. Hugs Dr. Hook with all the love I have. "Thank you"
He sure gets the pain and heart stopping agony of losing someone that should never go at such a young age. God Bless him for sharing his pain with us all, and always remember to tell those that U love how much U love them all the time. You never know when your time is over. Sits here crying.
Me and my sisters grew up listening 2 this album. If anyone out there has still got a copy of it i wud b very grateful if they cud do me a copy as i cant get it anywhere, heres hopin!! xx
ray sawyers wrote this song about his own little girl who took sick when she was five and died a year later , rest in peace all kids who don,t get to see a long life out
my friend played me this song when we were about 13, she loved it and wanted it played at her funeral....she died about 4 yrs later...i moved away by then...so i dont no if she had this played...if not this is 4 u jodi!!!! xxoo miss u
OMG i am crying soo bad. i lost my daughter when she was just two years old. She was killed when i was hit by a drunk driver. we were hit on her side of the car and he car seat was pushed to the other side with her in it. The doctors told me that she was killed instantly
omg you poor woman, my heart goes out to you!! if you ever need a friend i'd love to be that friend, you can message me anytime you might just need to vent, I know your little girl is watching over you right now as I write this, you can feel her can't you? remember the joy and the love she has for you, it's as pure as any other type of love in the world, I don't know what esle to say except I will keep you in my prayers and hope she stands by you as she has been doing, god bless you.
@ChaoticJinx this is miss poohgrl09 i am soo sorry for your loss as well. belive me when i tell you that the pain never goes away, but it does get less painful. you will get through this. you are in my prayers. please be strong.
Well, the FCC must have taken its time in banning the song, then. I heard it on the radio more than once in January 1977. What probably happened is it slipped down the charts not long after it came out. (By summer of 1977, it wasn't playing on the radio anymore.)
OMG, I've been a Dr Hook fan for over 30 yrs, N I've never heard this song. I'm sitting here bawlin my eyes out. For all the laughter he gave me w/ his music, this one rips my heart out. I think everyone can relate cause we've all lost someone at one time or another. All my love to this group.
me to. didnt know he did this type. he sure poured his heart and soul into it. wonder if it may be a bit personal. like someone said at some point in our lives we can all relate. I certainly can a few times over. We all have sadness in our lives but somehow we reach back to our inner strength and keep truckin..Beautiful song
i love this song it always makes me cry...you can hear in his voice the pain .... my brother had this song played at his daughters funeral....wonderful song and dr hook is a fantastic artist .... i hope he come back on the scene would love to hear more tunes from him
I just listened to this for the first time... thanks to cdaniels7689... It sounded as if he was extremely emotional while singing it... like on the verge of tears.
I just lisened to this song for the FIRST AND SECOND TIMES. After thinking about it, I have decided that there is probably NOONE IN THE WORLD who could sing this song with such feeling and emotion like Mr. Sawer. He did sunch an amazing job with this song. Hats off for posting it.
Hi mate, i'm a massive hook fan! Shel Silverstein is a true legend for writing such brilliant and beautiful songs and Dennis carried them off to a tee!! Met him in person at his solo tour in Darwin England, great guy. Long live the Hook!!
I love D.R Hook, this song makes me so sad, it makes me cry.

I heard this song for the first time almost 5 years ago on Father's Day.
It is the SADDEST song I have EVER heard in my 40+ male years.
No song has ever come close to tugging at the heart strings as this has.
Apparently, there is some factual basis behind it. Not the 'angel' part, of course.
But, I just wonder what would possess Ray Sawyer to compose , or sing, such a sad song?
979708 1 year ago
@979708 His(Ray Sawyer) daughter's death is why he wrote the song.. but the poor man hardly sings it any more i think it's clear why , he can never make the end without braking down.

I really just don't like this song. It's cheesy and corny. I love Dr Hook and have a daughter of my own but this song isn't that good.

I Heard This Song Was Realeased But Was Banned :/ And I Think It Were ABout His Daughter
Jealousbebs 2 years ago 2
Well, the FCC must have taken its time in banning the song, then. I heard it on the radio more than once in January 1977. What probably happened is it slipped down the charts not long after it came out. (By summer of 1977, it wasn't playing on the radio anymore.)

OMG, I've been a Dr Hook fan for over 30 yrs, N I've never heard this song. I'm sitting here bawlin my eyes out. For all the laughter he gave me w/ his music, this one rips my heart out. I think everyone can relate cause we've all lost someone at one time or another. All my love to this group.
Yoacham1 2 years ago 3
me to. didnt know he did this type. he sure poured his heart and soul into it. wonder if it may be a bit personal. like someone said at some point in our lives we can all relate. I certainly can a few times over. We all have sadness in our lives but somehow we reach back to our inner strength and keep truckin..Beautiful song

This is the saddest song I have EVER heard in my life.
I'm am Australian male in my early 40's. NEVER have I hear a song so pitiful.
NEVER has a song melted my heart.(maybe that's what's pitiful!)
What makes it sadder is that it's a bit anti-climatic.
Whatever possessed the artist to write such a sad song? Previous posts suggest it has some basis of fact.
