Well, it was originally a 99-year lease that was agreed in 1898 when Britain was awarded the final territories of Hong Kong. Of course, the details of how the lease would end were not hammered out in 1898. It took a meeting between Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher in 1984 to finalize the return of Hong Kong to China.
So regardless of whether anyone agreed to the handover or not, it was going to happen because it was already agreed upon in 1898.

I worked in HK in 1993 , i went back 2 years ago on a holiday , i cant belive how the place has changed, swampped with low skilled workers from the main land, high crime. And many people in HK who grew up while it was under british rule were not happy with its current situation. the death sentance is now legal in HK!
I also went back to HK in Dec/2006. I witnessed the changes in HK. It was cleaner and more organized than before handover to China. May be because of the development in the mainland has some positive effects and and pushed HK do better. Over all, I enjoyed my trip in HK as well as in mainland.

Well, it was originally a 99-year lease that was agreed in 1898 when Britain was awarded the final territories of Hong Kong. Of course, the details of how the lease would end were not hammered out in 1898. It took a meeting between Deng Xiaoping and Margaret Thatcher in 1984 to finalize the return of Hong Kong to China.
So regardless of whether anyone agreed to the handover or not, it was going to happen because it was already agreed upon in 1898.

I worked in HK in 1993 , i went back 2 years ago on a holiday , i cant belive how the place has changed, swampped with low skilled workers from the main land, high crime. I also went back to HK in Dec/2006. I witnessed the changes in HK. It was cleaner and more organized than before handover to China. May be because of the development in the mainland has some positive effects and and pushed HK do better. Over all, I enjoyed my trip in HK as well as in mainland.

You misunderstood them. They're fighting for full democracy and other political, social, and environmental issues, and even the ones the UK gov't back then haven't really dealt with in a long time. And eventhough some or most don't like the CCP, they never rejected being part of China and being Chinese.

Britain should have kept Hong Kong. Screw the lease contract, turn the island into a fortress and did in and let the chinks use their human wave attacks.
