"Thoreau and Goldman" is rather offensive. Her "you ask.....they don't give......you take it" mentality is not one based on self reliance. It's pathetic and depressing.

@ginasiepel Great engineering and design. I'm now trying to design a 1 person fishing boat (I'm leaning toward pontoons right now, money is very tight so thinking simple, small and unconventional. These and other books of about the same time were great .
This was a time when the practical person, the mechanic, machinist , pattern maker was celebrated. Practical skills are not gender dictated. 3 cheers on the boat and the rest of your endeavors.
Most people are too scared to try anything a little dangerous.
I have a book like that that tells how to make black-powder and a cannon.
Those were different days. The bp worked well but the cannon? Not without better steel and tools. Cheerio
Folding design makes it easy to store ashore. I think for long term use, knees should be fitted where the gun'ls meet the transoms on each part of the hull.
Nicely done! When I was a kid in the 60's my public library had a copy of "The Boy Mechanic" and I checked it out a bunch of times. I have since found a couple copys for my own collection. I love the statements like "this steam engine can be constructed from materials found in most home scrap piles". Everything from photography, radio, electrical, magic, bicycles, models even a biplane glider! Get one on eBay.
What a facinating idea. That would be perfect to fit in the back of a pick up truck so you wouldn't need a cumbersome trailer.
Absolutly magnificent!
Heres an idea. Build an out rigger system like polynesian boats for stability. A nifty retracting light sail based on retractable window shades would be sweet!
I saw a neat project where they used huge plastic barrels like oil drums and made a party barge catamaran. Fit over the bed of his truck.
Awesome work Gina! I've been thinking of starting this project but was wondering what the key changes are that have to be made from the plans?
