September 12 1979: I had just turned 8 and there was all this talk of a hurricane coming. I can remember Aunt Dianne calling out the back door, "Your dad is here!" As I dropped what I was doing, I saw a butterfly fighting the wind, I felt the butterfly was trying to get to his home. I stopped and just watched this butterfly as he was pretty much out of control. I thought, "I hope he gets there."
i was 10 years old. i live in elberta which is in baldwin county. this is definately where the most damage occurred. all i can say is, there used to be a lot more pine trees, then hurricane frederic came a long. it looked like someone had trown a box of matches on the road. we lost a 300+ year old oak.
well wife and i lived in ft walton bch then and we had a hurricane party with about 20 friends. VERY STUPID IDEA!!! the big glass window blew in and trees started falling. ended up 16 adults and 4 crying babie and 2 cats and a dog all crammed in a hallway closet!!! then moved to guam where we survived a SUPER TYPHOON and a 6.3 eathquake. WHAT A LIFE!!!!
This "hurracan" devastated our crops and kept the family indoors for a week. I remember going outside during the eye of the storm and seeing the plantain fields flattened, all the hopes crushed for the growing season, and a foretlling move back to the States ensued.
