Are we alone in the universe? I don't know= Known Unknown
Unknown Unknowns describe something that we don't question because we are completely unaware of it. If you are blind (and nobody tips you off),you don't know about colors, therefore it would not occur to you to question the color of the sky . If you didn't even know that North America existed, would you wonder who lived there? Silly examples, but sound statements on Rumsfeld's part.
I have never heard such a well-articulated, sensible explanation of U.S. foreign policy during the Bush administration. FINALLY, it has been explained to me, and I think it's the same system that Obama is using, as far as I can tell. The scariest part of this evilmonger's explanation is that -- if you listen to it about three times and really iron out what he is saying -- the bastard makes perfect sense.
He should have mentioned how leftists are a perfect example of "unknown unknowns". You see they're so ignorant, stupid and immature, they really don't know enough to know that they don't know anything. I love getting into debates with these sorry pussbaggers and watching them walk away in fits or try to take a swing at me in frustration. What sorry losers!
Rumsfeld was the Bush administration's secret weapon for confusing the shit out of simple minded reporters and to keep them from asking the real questions like where is all our tax money gone to.
Is the fact that this administration had a lil more than prior knowledge to the 9/11 attacks a 'known-known' or a 'unknown-known' cos even i know it aint an 'unknown-unknown'
Man this guy is extremely confident when he talks, even when he doesnt make sense and has no idea what the fuck he is saying. He didnt even stutter im impressed, how confident he is in his bullshit.
@Jermetrice What is incorrect or confusing about what he is saying? Sure, it's sort of stating the obvious and contributes little without context, but it makes perfect sense. The first known/unknown describes awareness of a premise or issue that raises a question; the second describes whether or not we can answer that question.
It's funny you all slam him on this. This concept is critical to understanding executive level thought processes. I was introduced to it during Intelligence training in the USMC and it came up again in college analytics and again in business school.
I don't think he even knows what the hell he is talking about but it served the purposes of the Bush administration and the international banking cartels.
I have a feelign if you were in his presence you wouldn't be afraid... if you were in the presence of Al-Qaeda, the Taliban, or Saddam's Republican Guard, or the Fedayeen Saddam I think you'd feel different.
The man is incompetent, not evil.
These moral equivalencies have ruined people's minds.
Although we all get a kick out of this, he is actually showing a matrix used by intelligence officers to delineate between the information that they have at their disposal. It is a very useful tool for strategic analysis. Unfortunately, Donald Rumsfeld has a track record of gaffs, and this just sounded like another "faux pas". Truth is, he was actually 100% right. Right message, wrong audience.
We can go even deeper into the (un)logic of our psyche though There are also these things called: Known known knowns Meaning we known that we know what we know Unknown known knowns We dont know that we know what we know known unknown unknowns We know that we dont know what we dont know known unknown knows We know that we dont know what we know etc. :D
The worrying thing is he's essentially making a good point.
"Known knowns" - facts that we know
"Known unknowns" - At least we know to ask the question, but we do not know the answer (that tends to be the frontier of science)
"Unknown unknown" - the stuff we are so oblivious to we don't even know to ask. (When we answer "known unknowns" we tend to make "unknown unknowns" become "known unknowns")
I worry because, atleast for now, HE helps run your country!
ie:In his quotes, to be clear, "We" is the Intelligence Community, "they" are the alledged "Enemy"(Iraq).Rumsifield refers to info he knows, like locations, motivations weaknesses and strenghts etc. Info they know they dont know such as hidden reserves or spies etc. Info they dont know they dont know such as outside influences like Profetic Unfoldments, UFO or alien interference or deeply rooted uncomprehensible psychologys or hidden fuel and money sources. This formula of analysis maps thougts.
Is the sky blue? Yes= known known

BTW- Rummy really doesn't need defending

I love it when people defend this guy!
The thing that is funny is that he is serious about his logic. Instead of just saying that there are things we don't know,
things we think we know, things that we know and things that we say that we know even though we have no idea what we're talking about.
Read People Of Ar's comment in this thread to de-logicalize it some more.
Oh yeah, and lighten up, would you?
