my mother in law Joyce was one of the many children housed here she was only 4 and said to a 4 year old it was the toughest and scariest places she ever lived
Catholic Charities of Buffalo maintains all the old orphanage records. My grandfather was a toddler there in the late 1920s, and I was able to obtain a full set of records for him and his siblings through Catholic Charities.
@colleenrobledo You're kidding!! I have been trying to find a way to get records with my information but it's hard living in California. My two younger brothers and I were residents there - not once, but twice. I must have been between 5 and 6 the second time. I hated it there. If you wet your bed, you had to take your sheets through an underground "tunnel" to the laundry room. It was very dimly lit. I suppose to scare us into NOT wetting our beds.
My father was raised here on and off...he was born in1909, and his father, a doctor, and his mother, a piano teacher, were not married. His father wouldn't let him be adopted by anyone...My father had some fond memories of one particular nun here. I'd love to look for old report cards or memories with other residents...does anyone know how to access old recordxs?
my name is dianne freiert and I was raised here along with my brother fred and sister martha, trying to contact with other people who have been there, alot of stories to tell!!!!!!

this is where my great grandfather, my great aunt, and my great uncle all lived. i personally am glad to see that it is still standing, and hope it remains that way. there is so much history for me, and for other people im sure that is attached to this building. thank you for posting this!
I am very interested in what your aunt and uncles last name was. My grandmother and her two brothers might have lived here also. Their last name was Tamberino. John L. (Johnny), Daniel (Danny) and Mary Francis. Ring any bells? I just started the search and all I really know is that the orphanage had a fire and the records were burned.
I'm curious. Is there some particular reason that you chose to focus so much on the "worship" area? Granted, it's very interesting and worth looking at, but there are other parts of that building that merit almost as much attention.
This Orphanage is on Dodge street in Buffalo. I lived on Dodge street and watched it burn when I was young. They closed it temporarily, or downsized. It was still in use in the late 50's because I used to ride my bike in there and remembered feeling a little jealous because they had a pool. The boys used to leave their religious medals on the sides of the pool and rush off to class or prayer. My father was also in this orphanage during the depression of the 1930's.
I saw this orphanage burn in 1956. I was sitting in the library of the nearby Museum of Science when we heard yelling and we ran out toward the orphanage.... where all the children were streaming out on the sidewalk; and flames were shooting upward....I was 9 years old at the time. The image stuck with me all these years.... I am now 61. It's possible that this is the orphanage where my grandmother lived as a child.... I remember making that connection as I watched the scene.
This is spooky & sad. I'd never even heard of this place until I began reading "FixBuffalo". You say it's across from the Science Museum? Which street?
It is a spooky video. The orphanage was closed in 1956. Very curious how you equate religion with perversion. Look inside yourself. Plenty of perverse thoughts there. Before bloody abortion there were plenty of orphans. War orphans, you name it. Without the church they may have been on the street. What then? God bless the German Orphanage. God damn you.
Times change , these days its easier for the Catholic Church to march around at Abortion Rallys then to actually take care of the orphans already on this earth like they used to in the old days....
The Catholic Diocese needs to sell their $800k house on Oakland street and move here instead. Discusting how the church could abandon this building and leave it rotting for the local citizens when all the Catholic Priests can afford to buy new Cadillacs, Lexus and BMWs.... This is a billboard for the selfishness of the Catholic Church.
My father and all his siblings were put into this orphanage when he was very young, during the war. The walls do not need to speak... the atrocities he and his youngest sister went through there are unspeakable.
I haven't spoken with many people who were residents there. The main person I've spoken with didn't have bad things to say about it. I'm sorry it wasn't universal.
I really appreciate the chance to see what I have only heard about from my dad who speaks little of it.The movie actually made the tears of what he went through stream down my face...I am so glad i cold see this, thank you :)
that whole religious shit gives me the creeps, church on its own is too evil, lucky the decay makes one realize how random and pointless christianity actually is - nothing lasts forever. The idea that it's an orphan house AND catholic is creepy though...
I found a way inside today it was kinda creepy

A good number of other areas are too dark for my camera's video mode.

How come it was never demolished?
The vandals were definately doing their work.
Sad.

It is on Dodge Street. It hasn't been demolished because it is a heritage building and there is no money to pay for the demolition.

Lord - what else is new? It's the new American ruin.
This stuff depresses me. No quick fix to the City's ills.
