there is a fun variant, I call REVERSE othello, the only difference is you win the game by ending with the LOWEST score, its INTERESTING.

In other ways, it's easy to earn an angle for the opponent.

Reversi NOT Othello was invented in 1883. In Reversi the four centre squares empty at the start of play.

There is some lose connection yes.. The game reminded the creator of the fight for the girl Desdemona between Othello (a Moor) and the white Portuguese De Jago. There are also some opening positions which are named after characters in the play.
