  • Great video by the way. Im in highschool and my manufac teacher is having me taper a 5 degree cut on my baseball bat we are making on the lathe out of aluminum and he told me to set the compund rest at a 90 degree angle from the tool post then move the hole thing to a five degree angle and i have to do the same cut u did i hope you can help me thanxs.

  • this was very helpful thank you very much

  • Great service you provide!. I spend more time on the lathe then my job and your skills have improved my work considerably. Thanks a lot for your guidance. I feel bad asking, but I'd love some guidance on:

-leveling, gibbing Heavy 10 (or any other lathe)

-cutting a good 5-c collet (mine are pretty high tolerance, but not great)

-accurate measurement when dealing with a lot of slop (old machine)

    -setup for lathe/milling machine

Thanks again, you should be paid for this work you've done!

  • You are awesome!

  • I love your videos and think they are the best on youtube, but your wife must think you are talking to your lathes when you are filming your work, he he,

keep up the good work your doing showing us how to do it

    best regards from wales uk

  • Do you have a video or information on radius turning/ball turning?

  • Would the process be the same for cutting an internal taper

    Excellet video. :)

    Thank you

  • Really enjoyed watching your video, it sort of took me back to my own engineering days, I was once a fully skilled Press Toolmaker including making Jigs & Fixtures, I could jump on any machine in the toolroom with confidence in my operator skills, but its only because of people like yourself who taught me well. I miss those days as I drive for a living now, but I retain my engineering background for ever.

Excellent video - Thumbs up from England :-)

  • Nice videos!

I wanna learn how to work with a lathe. Would say its ok to learn by doing? Or should I get some help...an experienced guy like yourself on my side to show me how to?

  • @AnselmoFanZero You can certainly do it by yourself, but sometimes helpful to have an old hand nearby.

  • @mrpete222

Yep. Thats what I was thinkin. Thanks!

  • Thanks for this video series, i have a 13 inch south bend lathe ( belong to my father, now he left this world ) and i start to learning how to set up the cutting bits,

and to did this tapper, the lathe have the tapper attachment and i read on another video how to use it, thanks

  • 8:51 was that your wife????

  • i just purchased a Logan model 7500 lathe i ran it at the shop and its in good condition everything works on it and i bought it for $600 do you think it is a reasonable price......Sir

  • @romeojuliet54 Yes--worth at least 800 or 900

  • how many lathes do you have? I know about the two in the basement, this one looks like a one from the garage (yes, I see the tractor), so it makes it a third one. don't tell me you have more? :)

  • @seasonedtoker I have sold this Logan lathe since this video was made.

  • Great technique. I am in a machining class and was just taught the exact way of turning tapers by rotating the compound to the degree that is desired. Works wonderfully. My compound is manual feed as well, so on my finish pass I count one second in between .005 marks on compound feed. A bit time consuming but makes for a consistent finish without lines when you count in your head. Nice videos

  • G'dae mate, thanks for sharing your knowledge ,,,you sir are the best source of information on machining techniques on you tube...keep up the good work and merry chistmas to you and alll....

  • Sorry I ran out of characters. My user name GK1918 stands for Greaves Klusman

heavy 20 made in 1918. I only know of 2 in the country and mine works perfectly.

I made this MT2 in my last writing for my pride a 1942-SB9A with a rare 4.5 bed. I

know you are in my age group so if you could contact me at Visicoach@comcast.net I'll email photos to you. And also a flat belt drill press

that can not be identified (its a big one) thanks again Sam in Ma.

  • Thanks oddly I have always done it this way. No schooling, no books, and no help.

I figured this out myself. Now this vidio. I guess I did well. It began when I lost a

MT 3 center. So I chucked up a good MT3. I then with dial ind. on compound,

went back and forth with my carriage until it dialed into '0' then locked in my comp

rest. .This is now the angle. I figured out to turn it long enough as to put into my

headstock & cut to what I need Works perfectly. self taught thank you SP.

  • Thanks very much for the taper tip and for nailing it down in video, A great instructor was just what I needed today!! I'll be back!!

  • well explained

  • Good informative videos. I've been bashing and trashing metal for donkeys years, but I always learn something new. Thanks for posting

  • God Bless you for sharing Your Knowledge.

  • was told if you place a ball bearing in centre hole at the ends of you work peace and have centres with a hollow to suit the ball bearing. That this would over come the problem with turning a taper with the offset tail stock method.

  • @Mrlandroverful Good idea-one could use a woodturners CUP CENTER with the point removed.

  • Thanks for the Glen Beck reference. He's a funny guy.

Also please block the dude with the course language.

Keep these videos coming. I just finished watching the ones on "Reamers." I really didn't know much about reamers before those 3 videos.

  • this is especially good for me to hear after having some tubal caine books-good work-thanks

  • As rikilousx said , great video, your others as well. Thank you posting them , i have learned a lot.

Our friend Glenn Beck sir ;)

  • Love this video, and all of your others... so wished you hadn't mentioned Glenn Beck.... however, you sure are a fantastic teacher and generous with your time. Thank you!

  • Ah Oh a brief cameo by Mrs. Tubalcain... Time for lunch!

There is always a little deflection when taking a cut, some times the slides in the lathe will pull a little one way in one direction and a little the other way when you back up.

  • Thanks, that was useful to see (and hear).

A bit surprising to hear that the cutting on the back travel was the result of workpiece flex. It appeared to be a shallow cut on a reasonably large diameter rod. Is work flex the only reason this can happen?

  • Where did the name "tubalcane" come from?

  • Genesis

  • @tzkelley Genesis 4:22 Tubalcain is a descendant of Cain, the son of Lamech and Zillah

Also, pen name used by an English author Tom D. Walshaw who regularly wrote for ME from the 40's up to his death in the early part of the 80's (I beleive)

  • @tzkelley

Genesis 4:22 " And Zillah, she also bare Tubalcain, an instructor of every artificer in brass and iron....." Quite a fitting name for our YouTube friend, I would think :).

  • @imrussman I want to apologize to Tucalcain for the outburst from this nut. He was making vulgar comments on my videos, so I blocked him. Apparently he decided to come here and harrass me through the comment portion of one of your videos. If you just hit the block button, he won't bother you anymore either. The internet is a great thing, but sometimes it brings out the cuckoos as well.

  • Wow, Glen Beck now has MORE credibility!

  • Why don't you live next door to me?

  • oh noes you listen Glenn Beck?

    Oh well......

Your machining videos are still great.
