@curlymo01 - 3, because you have to think of what number can you divide both the numerator and denominator by so, 3 fits in perfect to both 9 & 12, because 3x3=9, and 3x4=12. Same thing with 7, it could go into 21 three times, and could go into 28 four times.

to make it into a smaller fraction you would divide the numerator and the denominator by the same number. 3 is the only number, apart from 1, that will go into 9 and 12. so 9 divided by 3 is 3 and 12 divided by 3 is 4. 3/4
