So basically all you guys are saying is NASA;'s funding is really just enough to keep these guys out of the unemployment line???!!! No president wants to be know as the one who shut down NASA. so just fund it with enough money to keep them going, but not enough for any real planetary exploration? Am I hearing this correctly?
TOOOO BAD THAT IDIOT IN THE WHITE HOUSE CANCELED (FAILED TO FUND) THIS PROJECT. SO NOW WE HAVE NO AMERICAN MEANS OF LEO OR FUTURE INTERPLANETARY TRAVEL. WAY TO GO OSAMA OBAMA
@mjsimons57 totally agree. I can also predict that as long as that bum is in the white house there wont be any real nasa or space exploration. We're actually taking backwards steps in my opinion.
@KinaNafasi Your opinion is wrong. Space travel is fascinating. Try reading about it. You would find out that all signifigant funding to manned space exploration was cut in the early seventies, and is only now returning with CCdev. The Republican party has never funded space exploration. They only use NASA to develop weapons tech.
Even though people who don't know what's going on whine about him, Obama is the best president for space exploration in nearly 50 years.
@monokhem I respectfully disagree, although you are entitled to your opinion as well. Look, all im saying is it just looks like were dealing with antiquated technology rather than some newer designs. Why are we still messing around with the same propulsion methods. Why not nuclear and other ideas? Same ole stuff. its frustrating really.
@KinaNafasi Cars have had 4 wheels, 2 headlights, and a windshield for a hundred years. Just because modern cars have those too doesn't mean they aren't more advaced. Looks can be decieving.
They just had a breakthrough in nuclear power plants the size of a briefcase (40kw/hr), and expect to have a prototype in opperation next year. The VASIMR plasma-based propulsion system is set to be attatched to the ISS in a year or two for testing. It's happening. Just start reading up on it.
You guys do realize that this conical capsule that is going to return 6 people from space to earth alive no matter what, must be a state-of-the-art machine.
Why has the Orion`s "Service module" changed from the large Apollo" type as shown in this video ( 2007 ). To the "egg cup" style "Service module" shown in video a year later ( 2008 ) ?
NASA is a cluster - F. They need to quit making cartoons and spend their money on building the ship already....Can the Ares I, use the Delta 4 heavy and get ON WITH IT !!!....
Nasa Needs to grow a set and quit "learning how" to do long term space living. Have we not been performing experiments for 20 years. Lets go to Mars already, enough messing around.
We were closer to going to Mars in 1969 than we are now. The political will simply isn't there. And (ironically) everything is a lot more expensive now.
@dcb1138 well, one good reason(this is my opinion) why we havent gone to mars is because were already there, the government already has a base set up there with the help of their secret interstellar spacefleet. the british and the us and other countries are working together coperately setting up secret colonies in space, the moon, and on mars. dont know why though, but they probably know something we dont know
This is the original uncastrated 5.5M Orion before the mass cuts to make it able to fly on the under performing J2 Ares I.
The J2 5segment srb Ares I lifts about 5,000kg less then the Original SSME 4 segment srb ares I would have but they decided they couldn't get an SSME to air start safely and decided SSMEs are too expensive to throw away.
The odd thing is they didn't even do any ground tests first before switching engines.
@LegosPL0X There is a difference between visiting the ISS to provide it with supplies, exchange crew... etc. in some low earth orbit. And visiting the moon or even mars (remaining in the capsule for prolonged time, isolated, no ISS). Different required equipment, power, oxygen, water and food supplies are required for each case. I think it,s a wonder that they will use the same capsule to visit the ISS, moon and mars.

NASA needs to be dismantled and be replaced by a new more ambitious organization and we need to start making permanent colonies in space now . . .

@Danny77uk Nah, everything is much cheaper now, due to automation and computers doing most of the heavy lifitng.
It's that now you can't find a Red Commie that wants to go on Mars before US.

Have you got several billion dollars to donate to the space program?
dyoniz1 1 year ago
@dyoniz1 They already have had (and have) several billion dollars. They already spent 9 billion on the program for nothing !!!!

it's odd, they're continuously changing the service module, it used to be shorter and now it's longer. The solar panels are rectangles.
