Brandy's style gave the song a much more deeper feeling of loneliness, which is absent in this version, although the vocals of Andrews are much better, but the mood doesn't seem as natural or believable.
also I laughed at the "slave in calcutta" part, that would have been funny in the "new" version of the song
I grew up on Brandy's version, but I prefer this 234563.98 times over Brandy's. Julie has a liquid warmth about hers, Brandy is just...very...breathy..
@XBreezyBooX that is because Julie is from the time before microphones, pitch fixing and everything else.. she sang with orchestra without a head mike.. my only sorrow is that she pushed her voice too hard and lost it.. check out her refusal for a Tony because she thought her cast was the support not her greatness
@DavidoffGustav I thought it was the throat surgery that messed it up? Julie is the image of how to remain humble and grateful throughout it all. I wish the actors I worked with had a smidge of her gratful qualities
@funkyflyswim Actually, she mistreated her vocal folds during Victor Victoria and ended up with nodes. We know now that they go away after a few weeks of vocal rest, but back then, it was assumed that they had to be cut out, so she had surgery, which damaged the chords.
I didn't know that this one was the original until a few years ago. I thought the version starring Leslie Ann Warren was the first, and I call myself a Julie Andrews fan. She shines in this as she does everything else.
@JAMbannana This program was broadcast live and in color, which was rare on TV in the 50s, but unfortunately, the only copy that survives is this black & white kinescope. I don't understand why they didn't colorize it when it was released on DVD. It probably would have helped it to sell more copies.
What I love about this is that something like 120 million people stayed home and watched this on TV on that Sunday night. It set a record for TV viewer-ship.
Cinderella was lucky to have to amazing women like Julia Andrews and Brandy play her

I love Julie Andrews, but I don't think her voice is fit for this particular song. She sort of sounds like Snow White. xD
