I, being a pupil from that school agree and would like to suggest that they cannot close the school. My reasoning wick and thurso are at least a 20 min drive. they have to think of another way, there has to be. The other pupils won't have the freedom to walk to school any more i think its outragous that they think that they can do that! P.S. Thats my house behind the buinding (community center "The Hall") 1:14 - 1:18
What the council needs to keep in mind is that they are dealing with children; not just numbers and statistics. Even from the statistics point of view, rural primaries compete just fine against town schools - even if the town schools have room, do we want to risk raising the pupil to teacher ratio to a point where our young ones won't get the attention and education they deserve?
Communities like Bower attract young families because of this safe rural environment. The council needs to back off.
The school really is at the heart of the community. Both smaller and larger Caithnesian settlements, hardly have as much life as Bower does. Taking away the school is just another stab into the peaceful way of rural Caithness; forcibly shunting kids into town schools could ruin their young lives by denying them of a safe place to grow up in. Bower already has a spread-out collection area - trying to bus the kids into town will complicate things and kill the day2day livelihood in the village.
Everyone, is of course entitled to their own opinion, it's just a shame our kids will have to get up early and catch the bus for 7 miles to reach the town. In Bower the school hold a lot of importance not only for the children, but for the wider community as a whole, it is our hub, and influences everyone one in the area, supporting communication between businesses and building friendships between residents. Everyone on the area wants to keep their local school. I'm no different!
