look how Kid blocks with his guns and then imagine how you'd block if you held the gun normal and how you'd block with a sword.
i'd certainly rank them sword, backwards gun, forwards gun (from best block to worst block).
hold your hand out and feel how your muscles work in the various positions. holding a gun normally and blocking puts you in a weird position that's hard to put force into. holding the gun backwards is closer to the sword block so it works better.
it is just to make him look better not cus of any insane reason like to block and defend, though the author could use it in some fights. Kid just uses it to look cool
@kukulza i kid is just a strange strange boy. i dont see how blocking with your guns upside down is any different then right side up if anything the gun would be pointed toward you more so while blocking with an upside down gun, then holding it normally
look up what a "tonfa" is and think about how holding a gun like Kid does it similar to a tonfa (it doesn't extend as far down the wrist as usual but it's the same style of melee weapon)
so if you think of kid as using tonfa that fire bullets from the shorter end (in the case of a gun, the shorter end is now longer than the other end), it makes no sense to hold his guns "normal." he's using the melee advantage of tonfa plus ranged power of guns.
@kukulza While holding a gun the manner in which u hold it is very important. Firing like that u lose a large amount of control and would send bullets all over the place because ur hand would not properly channel the recoil while firing and the natural quivers in ones arms would be magnified by the loose grip since handguns are meant to be held upright. Also trajectory would be affected since many calibers hold more of a curvature path holding it upside down would greatly affect that. L2 guns.
i'd love to see the physics related to holding a gun differently, ignoring the human element (genuinely i would)
As for the human elements (grip/quivers/w.e), while those problems may be true for people who have tried it once or twice, it may not matter after some practice... I don't believe i've ever heard of someone actually seeing if practice can allow one to hold a gun as kid does and still aim properly. if you know of anyone who has tried, feel free to mention them.
you're also making a big assumption that Kid is even aiming at all... One of his named-moves (something like triple-river-shot or something) fires 3 shots that curve quite significantly mid-flight...
i take that as meaning kid doesn't need to care about aiming (aiming is probably taken care of by the twin pistols themselves)
keep in mind also that Kid isn't human, so his ability to "channel recoil" and his "natural quivers" may be nonexistent as a Shinigami.
@kukulza better question, he has guns with homing bullets, why get close enough to justify having to hold them special for melee combat in the first place?

Wow that was awesome. I gave it 4 stars just cuz in my mind I'm comparing it to other really really epic ones I've seen, but this AMV is still very damn good. :D

blocking/punching with a gun held normally would be like blocking/punching with an awkward blunt object.
but if you hold the gun upside-down like Kid does then blocking/punching becomes relatively the same as how a sword held like that works.
how you hold a gun doesn't change the bullet's trajectory anyway. (it'd probably be a lot harder to aim with a gun held like Kid does tho)

look how Kid blocks with his guns and then imagine how you'd block if you held the gun normal and how you'd block with a sword.

hence why i said that.
my comment about the guns being more effective for hand-to-hand when held backwards was simply an idea.
they might have done it just to make him unique (he'd be symmetrical whether he held the guns normal or not)
