I just discovered this impressive and beautiful voice ...and I am truely overwhelmed by it !!!! What a shame that this straordinario artist is not better known, he certainly deserves a special place in the history of Opera.
I love Christoff and Siepi , but you can be certain that from now on, Mr. Shtokolov will be
also on my list of favorites.
Thank you @CraigFrancisSoto for introducing me to this amazing artist ~ and Thanks for this post.
This was very a very beautiful rendition, and elegant too. He takes very well care of the small but importat details. In particular, I like how he pronounce the word "Bog" (God) when he repeats the last line. He suggests the "hissing sound" at the "g" as it should be, but at the same time avoids making it too strong.
Absolutely the finest version of this oft-recorded Romance based on Pushkin's poem. A true artistic synthesis of all that's beautiful in poetry and song. WOW! what a voice Boris Shtokolov had. Thank you for posting this so that Boris may live forever in our hearts. AMAZING!
song and the singer. But let us not forget the band! Does anybody know which orc. this is? Just listen to the end starting at 2:55. Yours Lauri H /Jolson111,Finland
Absolute gem of voice and mastery of singing.Can not think of anyone else who could equal his beatiful voice control and richnes of the sound.What a joy to hear this extraordinary singer.Thank you for posting this
it is pure belcanto , so quite , lovely music . this song is not difficult to sing it but what makes it difficult is to interpretate the poetical text of Pushkin , not an easy task for sure .....
A wonderful romance , very famous in Russia , mainly bcs the verses belong to the Great poet A. Pushkin , who is the the national poet of the country . Sheremetev , like all Russian composers , follows the italian school of singing with all these familiar to us , legati - pianissimi - crescendi and all musical ornaments ..
Thank you Khankonchak. This is a very impressive voice. If you have any further Shtokolov you would like to share with us, I'm sure we would all be grateful to hear this marvelous basso. I love Reizen but this is something really special.
Che bella voce!I'm sorry to say I was not familiar with Shtokolov until I heard this piece.What a wonderfully sonorous voice this man has.His timber and tone is just marvellous.Usually,basso profundos like Shtokolov don't sing mezza voce and pianissimi like this.His voice gives me goosebumps. Meraviglioso.Bravissimo Boris!Grazie mille for sharing this superb piece.
Thank you very much, thank you with all my heart for having posted this song! This is all that I can say right now. I had been looking for this song, day after day, month after month, for quite a long while.
I shall not comment about Shtokolov and his music, as any comment becomes superfluous in front of this music.
Thank you for posting this. I first heard this recording some thirty years ago, and haven't been able to get it out of my mind, my heart, and my "soul" ever since. The pairing of Shtokolov's phenomenal voice with the musical poetry of Sheremetev/Pushkin, produces as you say a masterpiece -- which note for note, word for word, isn't equalled by many more complex and illustrious musical compositions. When given the chance to introduce people to Boris Shtokolov I always choose this particular song.

Such a beautiful voice. Also, his facial features look Asian. Very interesting and handsome.

It truly leaves a person silent - you are so right; his voice meets the soul of the song.
Thank you for this magnificent post! It has touched my heart as I have always longed to see Russia and hear the magnificent voices 1st hand.
This has given me that experience. Thank you!

its pushtin...
i used to love you; i love you still, maybe
not died down alltogether in my soul
but may it not alarm you any longer
i do not want to sadden you with aught
i used to love you worless, without hope
with shyness now, with jealousy racked
i loved you so ingenuously, so dearly
as God may grant you to be loved by another

"I loved you: and, it may be, from my soul
The former love has never gone away,
But let it not recall to you my dole;
I wish not sadden you in any way.
I loved you silently, without hope, fully,
In diffidence, in jealousy, in pain;
I loved you so tenderly and truly,
As let you else be loved by any man. "

feldeurs :
There is also a very beautiful version of this wonderful Russian romance sung by Dmitri Hvorostovsky on his CD "I met you my love.
I totally sympathize with you : It is one of the loveliest Russian romances with wonderful lyrics by the great poet Pushkin.
