when i was little and watch it off from my DVD "Hey, Mr. Producer", i always points at the TV and say" Hey! The pianist is the Fagin from Oliver Twist and also Elizabeth Swan's father from the Pirates of Caribbean!"
Julia McKenzie sang this song YEARS before Bernadette Peters dared to go near it. I saw the original London-production of Side by Side by Sondheim 15 times as a teenager, not realizing then that it was one of the gayest things I would ever do in my entire gay life. Julia McKenzie gave me a huge lump in my throat every time and she still does. Please by kind :-)
@peerkbh I don't mean Julia isn't good, she's amazing I love her too, I was more making a comment on how Bernadette Peters totally takes over and owns it. It was nothing against Julia.
@peerkbh Here's aflash for you: 'Broadway Baby' was NOT originated in Side by Side by Sondheim. It's originally from "Follies"- premiered on Broadway by someone who wasn't the glorious Julia McKenzie.
Thanks for your comment but I already knew that. Side by Side is of course a compilation of songs from other shows - an early Sondheim's Greatest if you will. Seeing Follies in London with Julia McKenzie some years later was another unforgettable experience, but I am fully aware that she was not the first to sing the song. Just the best :-)

I like how every time someone came in , Bernadette stopped singing & gave an attitude like , " what the hell , i should be the only one singing this " [: Bernadette was the best and the funniest at singing and performing this song. I just bought it on itunes & its exactly the same. I also LOVE how Bernadette & the lady from the beginning harmonized and Bernadette was like " Ohhhh geeee , " & "TWINKLING , TWINKLING , TWINKLING ! " <3333
I think Julia Mckenzie needs some credit for this video aswell!! She's a brilliant comedian and singer!! Her and Bernadette Peters are tied for Sondheim's favourite interpreters.
I absolutely adore this video. These ladies rock.
