  • He couldnt make a guitar scale sound bad even if he tried

  • @Aodhanhendrix1 Agreed..maybe we should get him pissed one night and get him out playing so we can look good..

  • Sweating...cotton mouth.... uh oh.

  • thin lizzy twiddle fuck yeah!

  • Free lesson, thanks!

  • govan is the lord of technique & tasteful technique but Im not a mad fan of his music, he's more of a major inspiration to guitarists

  • @AVH5000ultimate the hair is distracting....only those who can venture through the allure of the hair are truly deserving of the rewards of his wisdom....consider yourself lucky, disciplined one.

  • He is great... but he needs some conditioner.

  • suhr guitars.

    oh man...

  • You people comment his looks, stop with it.

    Learn something from this man.

  • I LOVE your little slidey things :D

  • his strap anoy me! >.<

  • First, thanks for the video.

Next, what is that fuzzy necklace your guitar is wearing?

  • @KrispyKreatin it's for dampening the strings while you're playing up near the pickups or tapping to reduce string vibration. usually people do it with hairbands. it just makes it a bit cleaner

  • @MrCk1234567890 cool beans. thanks man

  • can u do your next video on a 100 dollar fender squire, to show that we dont need a 3000 dollar guitar to learn this?

  • I wonder where he learn play guitar and music theory? Anyone knows?

  • Yeah and I want to be Shwissgart.

  • Let's face it kids, as we get older .... we mellow from metal into JAZZZZZ HA HA !!!

  • @5till12 Mellow, yes. Jazz....only the hipsters.

  • @TranceWulf Right. Because no real musician would want to play jazz.

  • @ShredST Not unless you like to play elevator music. But hey to each their own.

  • @TranceWulf Please educate yourself in a subject before making broad statement about it. WTF is elevator music, anyway?

  • @ShredST Stuff you generally hear in elevators i would assume. And i know far more about the history, practice, and people of jazz than i ever cared to know. Mkay~?

  • @TranceWulf The only elevator music I've heard are tame lounge music, so that excludes the vast majority of jazz.

  • Guthrie can talk with the guitar better than his mouth xD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Who he is, is he a well-known?

  • @ilkka2205 In the world of shred and guitar theory he is fairly well-known... But in general music, not at all.

  • "And we are mostly guys - Lets be frank" NO... I WANT TO BE GUTHRIE!!

  • thumbs up for debussy

  • I love this guys videos.....

  • GUITAR JESUS!

  • This guy is buckethead's yoda.

  • Este hombre es sobrehumano

  • This video alone has helped me become a better guitarist. I don't play this style, but it still is what made me break through my writers block of guitar riffs. Keep up with the good work, Mr. Govan!

  • i just love how he described the locrian mode :D

  • AND absolutely TOP marks for looking like Ian Anderson around '71

  • Fuck this guy is good...

  • great player, nice lesson

  • The magical SRV "wrong" note

  • beautiful sound, great to hear something actually musical, rather than the sound of automated dorian cogs or whatever, turning at super high speed

  • Should of learnt the piano...

  • Very enlightening. He talks a lot of sense and I would rather have the feel of the music and rhythm than speed any day. Love the different moods he gets from the Dorian by emphasising a particular note.

  • I have played the guitar for 13 years now. And I have to say that everything he says in all of these videos makes so much sense and is so true. Thanks a lot for these videos. It's being so much helpful.

  • occasionally i enjoy scalar soloing... its not a bad thing because its easy...

  • he is just another so damn great guitarist.

  • look at the extremely low action on that guitar.. why the heck isn't there any fretbuzz?!

  • He's a great teacher and even a better guitarist.I may not listen to his music, but I appreciate his playing and I respect him more than most guitarists.

  • Guthrie actually has the smartest philosophies I have heard from a guitarist

  • you are the fuckin man guithrie

  • "we want to be faster than the other guy, and we are mostly guys - let's be frank" =)

  • aww c'mon, I WANNA hear a Locrian Blues pattern...

  • The Gandalf of guitar... YOU... SHALL... NOT... SHREDDDDD

  • @nisoldi haha this make my fuckin day dude

  • @nisoldi hahahahah XD

  • FUCKING HIPPY

  • @danglingslong learn to play Mr small mind

  • "Three fit into the minor pentatonic shape nicely, three fit into the major shape nicely, and the other one is horrible." XD

  • mostly guys huh... well, maybe that's the bad thing about it

  • Cool!!!! Great technik, great music!!!!

  • counter injewity?

  • What are modes?

  • @anonymouslolxD scales starting on different notes basically. 7 notes in a scale, 7 modes, for example the second mode of C major, is D dorian, which is the notes of C major, only starting and ending on a D. Dorian is a mode, btw.

  • I hate guitars that need tabs for everything. Train your fuckin ear and learn shit phonetically. It'll make your a better guitarist and musician.

  • @natazer Guitars don't have ears

  • figure 4 is just great

  • melena libre

  • you look like you make swords

  • @frankyrocksmyrocks you look like you play too much WoW

  • @Metalheadddddd hey urkle, in an effort to figure out what in the hell you meant by "WoW" i googled it and found out it's geek speak for "World of Warcraft" if that was meant to be an insult, it didn't work.

  • @frankyrocksmyrocks that was genius haha

  • @Jordo1900 thanks man. i mean no disrespect to this guy, he's obviously an amazing player but also an amazing teacher. nothing but respect :)

  • Maaan fuckin shit! You are totally right!

  • Something about this guys playing!

  • 3 fit nicely in the minor pentatonic, 3 fit nicely in the major pentatonic and the other is horrible. ROTFLMFAO!!!!!!!!

  • where is the tab???

  • Guthrie the best freak guitarist

  • i understand now... guthrie govan is a guitar in human form... XP

  • I don't know why, but this guy scares me.

  • I think the entire way i perceive the guitar and music has just been changed. Pure brilliance.

  • I have been playing for 25 years, and have never come across anyone who taught me so much in so few words. Every time I investigated modes, or 'out' playing, I lost the plot. Why couldn't anyone explain it like Guthrie??? So concise, so clear...

  • I totally agree with this guy. Music has always been #1 for me, even as a shredder.

  • Rofl he is right. The Locrian mode is terrible XD

  • Wow, terrific advice well taught, and of course the guy plays like a motherfucker.

  • Great playing and teaching method!! Thanks !

  • This guy is fucking amazing.

  • Zen Guitar - Great Advice!

  • 1:26 - haha let's be FRANK, see what you did there

  • I fucking love this guy. Such a great personality, all he wants is for people to improve!

  • Where can I buy string dampener like he has? Dont have any hair scrunchies layin around

  • @SheebaTonkaMan thats actually what it is, a hair scrunchy. hes the guy that made using hair scrunchies famous

  • He looks like he's getting paid to do an instructional video... oh wait.

  • what the fuck are you guys talking about what does it matter what he looks like fucking grow up!! he a a freaking musical genius and all you guys talk about is his looks. there are so many valuable things in there that you could use to comment on and you don't. you know why most guitar players suck is practice not taking it serious. guitar is my second endeavor in life. I play baseball throw 94mph and i spends so many hours on it. apply that effort to guitar or just do fucking play!!!!!!!

  • He looks like he's been smoking crack and not slept for a week.

  • I bet this guy gets all the babes.

  • this guy would give a killer funeral or wedding speech

  • este wn tiene cara de freak !! se nota q no salia a jugar y q le falta una mina...... toca mortal...

  • Oh my God it's Jesus! And he plays the guitar!!

  • This guy is incredible! His teaching is fantastic. Why have I never heard of him?

  • Fuck he is just too good.

  • Where is the ring Hobbits?=/

  • gotta love guthrie playing TL style.

  • Wow, terrific player with a very pleasant way about him. I dig him and his style. Thanks to this gentleman for showing us guitar dudes some neat stuff to consider and practice. Of course, few of us will ever be in Mr. Govan's class, but we can try, right? Cheers.

  • whats that thing you got at the nut? is it a capo?

  • @gumme88 don't be ridiculous. It's for preventing the strings beyond the nut from swinging

  • @gumme88 He will move it up on the neck to keep other strings quiet, especially when tapping. Watch professor shred #3 Its like a fuzzy hair tie. They work great!

  • This guy is awesome, amazing skill yet remains musical even while shredding.

  • which mode was he talking about that was horrible? was it the phyrigian?

  • @hihowareyouitsme Any Phrygian mode contains all notes of the minor pentatonic scale built from the same root. He plays a minor 7(b5) chord and minor pentatonic has a natural 5th so it must be Locrian he's talking about.

  • @bertox137 oh okay thanks... i'm a bit rusty on my modes, havent worked on them in a while and i forgot which ones go with which chords

  • @hihowareyouitsme Locrian, I believe.

  • i could spend hours and hours just listenin the man talking

  • he looks like Ol Drake

  • braaaaavoooo proffff.... XD veryy niiiiceeee ..

    XD

  • Damn i love this XD i play mostly blues, but i find myself a bit restricted by that kind of playing scheme, i really wanted to approach different sounds but i end up loosing my "identity" by doing that, because its very hard for me to combine the pentatonic/blues licks with other scales and i always end up playing either one or the other =p i really hope this helps out

  • I'm not saying the guy isn't good. But does anyone else find it ironic that a guy with shred videos all over youtube is talking about not shredding?

  • @taurusclimber guthrie govan is probably hands down the greatest guitar player around these days. he plays fast when the time is right for him to do so, and as for having "shred videos," he doesnt title the videos, other people do.

  • @ThrashIsBack123 Another greatest guitar player comment. When are people going to learn that is totally subjective? I'm not talking about titles, I'm talking about playing. I've seen several of his songs where he is typical shredding. I'm not downing the guy's skills, he has them, I'm just pointing out the irony.

  • @taurusclimber noticed how i also spoke with objectivity by saying "probably." guthrie isnt saying not to play fast. he is a master at his craft and recognizes when he feels it is appropriate to play fast and play slow. hes warning agaisnt speed for the sake of playing fast. but seriously man, guthrie is one of the best around.

  • @ThrashIsBack123 If you use absolutes, there is no objectivity. An objective statement would be, "Guthrie Govan is among the top level guitarists these days." Not a "greatest guitar player" comment. I saw a master craftsman last night in Tommy Emmanuel. I like his music better than Guthrie's. It all comes down to opinion, but I can still say that they're both amazing at what they do. You can't deny that there are shred videos of Guthrie on here, because there are. But he's good.

  • @taurusclimber What exactly is typical shredding? He's advising players not to play easy set patterns; he's not telling them not to play fast.

  • I Feel The Same Way He Does . I Don't Wana Be A Shredder I Rather Make Music Then Tricks !!

  • WHAT IS THE SONG AT THE START RIGHT AFTER THE SHRED BEFORE THE VIDEO STARTS?!?!?!?!??!!!?!?!!?

  • @TcupCmug its just the backing track for his song WAVES

  • @MrMatropolis its not the backing track, i want to find the tab for it or the song. ive searched and searched i know its not the back track

  • @TcupCmug its the song ''waves'' frm erotic cakes but for the purpose of the video the melody has been taken out,

  • Well I bet he teaches you this.1 Go buy meth.2 Go Smoke Meth.3 Go get guitar.4 2 Days later Rember that you needed to get guitar not stop sidetracking.5 Smoke more meth.6 Play guitar scales for 3 weeks untell METH runs out.7 Go Sell guitar for more meth.8 go steal new guitar to finish pratcing scales.9 smoke more meth and play more scales.10 Go sell said stoles guitar for more meth.11 Go buy more meth.12 Now remanence how grate of a guitar player you are tell tweaker frends you are a rockstar

  • He looks like he hasnt slept in 3 weeks

  • To be honest I think he looks like Guthrie Govan. Regardless of what he looks like, I could listen to him play for hours on end!

  • Fine player. Lousy teacher.

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood

    Wow man, I gotta disagree.

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood The teaching was fine, but was not directed at novices. Otherwise he's have to explain pentatonics/modal theory, which is another kettle of fish.

  • @LiquorWreckedEmGood No, you just don't know your music theory.

If you knew what he was talking about, you'd be able to relate 100% to what he's saying.

Now take your harmonic minors and pentatonics and get out of my house.

  • Why are all the guys called frank?

  • I love this clean tone!

  • Looks like Andy Murray after a Year of hairgrowing...

  • @Futinger Reminds me of Ian Anderson from Jethro Tull Circa 1978

  • i hate how they mixed this with complete silence on the parts of him not talking. NOISE GATE-100%!!!!

  • the tremolo reminds me a lot the trem on the EBMM JP's

  • if ian anderson never founded jethro tull......this guy

  • haha he cant look straight into the camera for 2 seconds

  • figure 4 is my favorite

  • I don't wana be Frank :(

  • When I taught guitar I taught pretty much the same thing. I told them that they should listen to the scales and the notes instead of shredding through, and memorize where they were on the fretboard.

Of course, I'm nowhere near as good as GG. The guy's smooth as butter.

  • he looks dirty as fuck for some reason

  • My precious.......

  • 3:45 "youll find three of them fit into the minor pentatonic shape really nicely, three fit into a major pentatonic shape really nicely, and the other one is horrible" lmao hes telling the total truth about Locrian it is kind of horrible X__X

  • 1:25 "and we are mostly guys, lets be frank.." hahahahhah hysterical.

  • great playing....a tooth brush, shower and hair cut would do wonders.

  • He inspired me to add twiddles to my playing.

  • Ian Anderson.

  • He looks a little Jesus Christ.

  • This dude is the Bob Ross of guitar.

  • why is there a compresser on the vocals it sound anoying!

  • @MinNyeAccount It's a noise gate, not a compressor.

  • @boaganaba no he's right there is compression on the vocals

  • @6EELZE6U6666 But what he's talking about is the voice cutting in and out. That's a noise gate. Compression doesn't cut out sound.

  • @boaganaba no I think he's talking about the fact that his voice sounds really undynamic and squashed, I understand what a compressor and gate does

  • Good to see jar jar binks has found a new career ;) awesome technique tho cheers man

  • 10 people have defined themselves as bad guitarists. Can't argue with that..

  • Yngwie Malmsteen at 1:55

  • Ol Drake?

  • Hq

  • Not just a total guitar god but he's also a fucking excellent teacher too. I'd love to see him play Xbox : p

  • After watching & listening to this guy, that little lightbulb FINALLY went off in my head... He managed to explain music theory in a way that didn't sound like alien language! XD

  • Nice perspectives on music.

  • Loved that video! :D

  • he´s so fuckin right..

  • Comment removed

  • You have to admit the man is a class act, great teacher and player
