Why not take the meaning from the man himself (Sting): and then there's 'Peanuts', a quirky number not unlike Devo's 'Uncontrollable Urge', which Sting says is "about my disappointment with Rod Stewart, who became a big joke when he used to be a big hero." I think they refer to people like Rod Stewart as a "wanker" in England (i.e., A detestable person). Google this to get the skinny: 01.01.1979 - The Aquarian. Peace
Listened to this last night for the first time in years and loved it as much as i did back in the day. Went round some friends, got drunk and the misses said i was singing it all the way home... I can't remember that bit tho ;-)
His true birthplace is here in the USA in Alexandria, VA - but shortly thereafter he and his family moved to Egypt (which is how some sources incorrectly list his place of birth as Alexandria, Egypt), and then to Beirut, Lebanon.
Ahhh....memories seeing them in Austin, TX--outdoor concert during their Synchronicity tour of 1984. UB40 was the opening band...I'll NEVER forget that concert!!
Hey, K1...it's a song about being fed up with tabloid journalism and celebrity antics. He blames fame and the falsity of celebrity both with ruining people (by rendering them divas) and creating prurient interest by the public in those antics (perpetuating crappy press). "Peanuts" is the implied vendors call to the crowd as he vends snacks to those watching said "circus."
Could anyone please tell me what the meaning of this song is? I mean i can read the lyrics but I don't catch the meaning...anyone please lift the secret :)
witchespoint... back when the album was released, their first, it was hard to tell what was going to sell. 'roxanne' was obvious but "can't stand losing you" wasn't a big one for them here in Oz. really for the variations of styles and classic sound, the album is pretty legendary.
peanuts was one of my favs off the album (obviously) but then i like a bit of crazy energetic music. have fun all :o)
Why'd Sting have to go get all pompous and boring. The Police ROCKED!!!!

Presumably no one knows what that weird instrument is. Perhaps Sting and Stewart would know as they are the ones who wrote this song.
ClassicTVMan1981X 1 year ago
@ClassicTVMan1981X its no doubt Stewart on a middle eastern reed/woodwind of some sort, a folk flute from the middle east where he grew up.

Look at the current state of the media, all the celebrity news, distracting us from the real news that the huge media corporations won't tell us!
It's a ridiculous media "circus" indeed, keeping us stupid!
Enjoy some "Peanuts" while the TV makes you dumber!
Great song!

The solois Andy's take on the Coltrane "sheets of sound" technique, and the hooting noise sounds like a melodica.

@Theunion538 Yep, leave it to Andy to put a Coltrane moment in a punk song!

One of my favorites from this album and the Police in general. I wonder if the title (and delivery) was inspired by that scene from "Duck Soup."

This is such an annoying disaster of a tune, obviously a filler.
Listen to Dizzy's Peanuts. I know Gordon was a jazz *nut*.
