  • MS TESSMACHER!!!!! :Dhahahaha I love that yell...

  • omg that was so traumtic for me when i saw it for the first time - it actually hurt me more than it hurt him - i so wanted to just chuck in and save Superman.

  • Some people complain that Hackman played Luthor too campy but I love how smug he was. He's the smartest guy in the room, he knows it and he wants everyone else to know. And he's going to kill millions without blinking an eye, he just doesn't care.

  • I hope Zac Snyder considers Ryan Gosling as Lex Luthor.

  • GREAT scene!! ;)

  • I miss thoose real movies.

And no 1 can replace c. reeve. He is the real superman

  • WHAT?? Superman to stupid to close the box and block Luther?? LOL

  • @snlker Whenever he is around Kryptonite, it CRIPPLES him. I emphasize. CRIPPLES.

  • I like it when Luthor holds the Kryptonite up and Superman has the best "shocked" look like: What the fuck is that?? Get it away whatever it is! Reeve = THE Superman.

  • Everyone has their own little faults. mine's in California

    best Lex Line

  • To me Christopher Reeves will always be the Superman of my generation

  • chris is so cute in this scene nice and helpless simular to Burt Ward being given Knockout gas from catwomen as the boy wonder.

  • Which of the "Superman" films is this from?

  • Miss Tessmacher!!!!

  • People really forget Superman is actually a smart guy. Even in the movies, they dumb him down. It's really quite frustrating.

  • always thought this scene was incredibly homoerotic... mind over muscle, the way reeves' breathes and pants hard, eyes half closed, acting like he is having the world's greatest orgasm instead of incredible weakness and pain, the way luthor "lovingly" takes him by his arm and walks with him and carries him away......

  • I love that Hackman comes across as jolly and humorous as Luthor until things get serious, and then we see him as a pure sociopath...amused by the idea of Superman's death and cruelly nonchalant at the notion of Miss Teschmacher's mother's demise. He treats the whole thing as a thrill. "Is this how a diseased mind gets its kicks? By planning the death of innocent people?" "No...by causing the death of innocent people."

  • @ignoranceandwant you nailed it. hackmans performance was the perfect balance between camp and straight.

  • @ILoveLadyGaGa1999 He's probably shocked, as it's the first time that he's ever encounterd kryptonite in the movies.

  • n its funny how i always thot this who gives a fuck about the kryptonite the nigga superman can still fite without his powers but i soon discover it doesnt just take away his powers it makes him weak n kills him

  • yall ever notice how the fuck does ppl dont no who superman is what he too fast for u to c i thot the purpose of suits so they wont no ur identity all superman have is tights a cape and his damn underwear on top of his tights the nigga doesnt have a mask all he does is take off his glasses how stuipiud u gotta b to not relize superman is clark

  • Couldn't Superman have just shut the box as soon as he saw and felt the Kryptonite?

  • 73 PPL LIVE IN Hackensack, New Jersey

5 PPL DONT LIVE IN Hackensack, New Jersey

  • tell me exactly how does kyptonite HURT superman. what does it do to his body physicaly? does it hurt him and take away his powers, or just take them away?

  • @haydross57 its highly radiated for kryptonians if exposed long enough it can kill them

  • Really! IS he that weak that he can't just take it off

  • How embarrasing would that have been if it didn't work

Superman: There's no detonator in here! Just a glowing rock!

Lex: But...but it's radioactive! Radioactive chunks of your home planet!

Superman: And...is that supposed to hurt me?

Lex: Welll...oh forget! Just take me to jail...

  • @Bladerunner93 You should write for Robot Chicken.

  • This is Hackman's finest moment in his 3 films as Lex. He's so deliciously evil when he owns Supes, and then promises certain doom for Eve's mother.

  • MISS TESCHMACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • i can't watch it - it makes me as much pain as Superman feels

why couldn't he just run away when he saw that....

  • @SimsMoyal I think he's just so surprised that he's feeling so much pain.

  • It wld hav happened like this in Superman Returns

  • In Superman Returns, that villain Lex Luthor (played by Kevin Spacey) says "Didnt your dad ever told you to LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!!"when kicking Superman after throwing kryptonite sto destroy him.

  • I miss him so much ;(

  • @monkcr (looks at watch, looks up, shakes head, walks away)..........MS TESCHMAKER !!!!!!!!!!

  • yeah just like the scene from "Superman Returns"" where Kevin Spacey's Lex Luthor throws kryptonite at Superman to defeat him saying "Didnt your dad ever told you to LOOK BEFORE YOU LEAP!!"

  • I love the Kryptonite/Krypton theme that john Williams wrote and that kicks in when Superman opens the case. It's amazing how one little six-note motif that is slightly out of tune can convey so many emotions at once. It's so mysterious, creepy, powerful, etc. Great music.

  • If a piece of rock could kill you, thats exactly the expression youd have. A lesson in acting any film school should show. RIP Christopher Reeve

  • Great movie but one funny thing happened. When they were getting ready to fire those missiles, the headline for the Daily Planet was, "Twin Missile Tests Confirmed" and then when Clark is going to Perry White's office, they show the missiles on TV and someone tells Clark, "You are blocking the set, Clark". But then Lex tells Superman about the missiles and Superman says, "There are TWO of them?" The funny part--as a newspaper reporter, he never read his own headline or watched TV!

  • I LOVE CHRISTOPHER REEVE.

    R.I.P.

  • Okay. Superman: The Movie plus Superman Returns special effects.

    Think about it.

  • @GalacticKnight

    I came.

  • @Dancingwithotters Exactly.

  • Superman: You don't ...even care..... where the other missile's headed ..do you?

Luthor: Certainly I do.I know exactly where it's headed.Hackensack, New Jersey. Give my regards to Aquaman down there. 1:16 SPLASH!!

  • Michael Rosenbaum > Gene Hackman.

It's true, It's true. Though Hackman is miles better than Spacey.

  • this movie: the cast, acting, script, effects! they dont make movies like this anymore

  • 1:43....classic.

  • Lex Luthor is smart. He realizes Superman is too powerful and sure of himself he will fall far the trick that he has hidden the "remote control" to detonate both missiles in a lead box.

He even told him "don't touch that", and when Superman gets a shock Luthor gets extra joy when he says:"I told you". Kudos to Gene Hackman.

To me this is a good villain. One that turns the tables on Superman in an instant.

  • @McLarenMercedes I agree, Luthor is one hell of a villain. I loved the way he took control of Superman at the end, and also loved the way that he threw him straight into the pool. Mind you if I was him, I would've made sure that the pool was laced with a kryptonite liquid, even more pain for Superman :-)

  • Is it me, or does it sound like Lex shouts "Miss Pissbucket!!!!" at the end of this clip?

  • Such a great moment. This film can not be topped. Reeves, Donner and Hackman did such a good job.

  • @monkcr

oh well. she better get out of there fast then

  • i love smallville for introducing me to the superman legends n christopher reeves does amazing acting. superman is truly the best super hero there is. n lex luthor is the best villian ther is. now im an addict for the s on my chest. i want clark kent to sweep me off my feet [sigh] love reeves

  • "I told ya..." *priceless grin*

    Gene is the ONLY Lex.

  • For the money...the greatest portrayal of a villain in movie history! Never before has an actor been able to portray such an evil character with such a wicked sense of humor. All wrapped up in a brilliant scientific criminal mind. Nobody did it better than Hackman. Likewise.....Christopher Reeves portrayal of the Man of Steel will forever be second to none in my opinion! He indeed was Superman.

  • You diseased maniac.

  • If he shot kryptonite into his balls it will be so awesome

  • reeve's eyes are something to look at

  • I like how he can actually move around when exposed to Kryptonite in this other then in Smallville where he instantly collapses to the floor, that pisses me off!

  • Hackman's Luthor is underrated.

  • what a cool lair!

  • Reeve's horse Buck was made out of kryptonite.

  • luthor will have cancer if he touch's that kyrptinite

  • oh that's disgusting - i remember i watched it in 1988 when i was in 3rd grade and i was crashed for many days after that i felt such a huge pain for my hero

  • I absolutley love how clueless Superman is against Lex Luthor. I mean, what sort of man parades around in a tight spandex outfit and red boots and expects not to be destroyed? If I was Luthor, I would've humiliated Superman until the whole world could see what a useless piece of s**t he is!

  • "Mind over muscle." God that's good stuff.

  • rip chirstopher

  • Luthor gave him a chance when he said "Don't touch that."

  • The kriptonite made it hard for him to be storng!

  • THE SINGLE FUNNIEST Moment in SM history at 1:49. Gene Hackman is pure genius. With the head shake!!!!

  • Gene Hackman rules!!

  • Meteor rocks. Damn it.

  • god i was just C R A S H E D when i watched that scene back in 1988

Superman was always my hero and when i was 10 years old such a thing made me go beserk! even thou it turns out for the better later

  • Why didn't he just close the box?

  • chris looked so cute all powerless so lickable like Robin being put to sleep.

  • Bush created Kryptonite!

  • What if Lex had gotten it wrong, and Kryptonite didn't affect him? Then Superman would have just been like "What the hell is this?" and Luthor would be like, "Urm...it's supposed to kill you...?" and Superman would then throw him through some walls, stop the missiles, make out with Lois Lane, then fly around the earth, smiling for the camera...

  • @Bladerunner93 - but Lex is a clever man and Superman is no where near as clever as Lex as shown in this clip. Lex Luthor rules everytime!!!!

  • Superman is gay. Luthor rulz

  • Luthor's an idiot; he wore a kryptonite ring all those years, and didn't even think that a radioactive chunk from the planet Krypton had a cancer risk...

  • @SupermanDestroyed

    YOU are gay. Luthor suckz.

  • Dude, in this scene Superman got seriously owned - DEAL WITH IT!

  • you should see Lex luthor vs Superman, then you'll know REAL Superman pwnage.

  • Superman sucks - big time!! Look at what he wears PMSL!

  • @Bladerunner93 Lex wouldn't have got it wrong mate! He is far too clever for the likes of Superman - just look at Luthor, smartly dressed, fashionable, look at Superman - what a joke!

  • I love the thrilled look on Luthor's face as he witnesses the Man of Steel experience pain for the first time.

  • @tangerinewolf This isn't the first time he's experienced pain.... (referring to his father's death.)

  • superman should have just closed the box...lol

  • Superman isn't as clever as that !

  • I loved the way that Lex used the Kryptonite and Superman's own vulnerabilities against him. Superman, with those bulging pecs, red boots, red cape, bought to his knees and discarded into the pool like a piece of crap. HOT STUFF!

  • my ex reminds me of lex, rich and twisted lol!

  • I had the hottest dream last night inspired by this scene...

  • i love his really cute gasp when he gets pushed into the pool. and i find the insult at the beginning really cute. and i find it funny when miss tessmacher says that her mother lives in Hackensack and he shakes his head. and lex's miss tessmacher scream is amazing. that is my text tone!!! oooo and throughout the whole movie... christopher reeve is totally and utterly hot. but that's enough of me. lex is not hot, he is a mean man and superman rules all.

  • do u have clip when the gal helps superman

  • turned to putty in lex hands

  • I love this scene.

  • How about Kryptonite bullets

  • Chain me up any day Lex.

  • hot

  • who. please for the love of god say that it isn't lex u think is hot. plz plz PLZ tell me superman is the hotty of the scene. PLEASE!!!!!!!

  • actually, both of them together. power play = hot.

  • That is one hell of a set.

  • Love the bit at 1:01 where Luthor puts the chain onto the helpless hero!.... Superman was dumb as shit not to realise that Luthor was a better man than him!

  • Fantastic acting, the sheer look of fear on Reeve's face. Really makes the green rock look even real one screen.

  • that lex is way too hairy lol

  • The hair was actually a wig. He takes it off at the end of the movie.

  • so hes hiding his shame? XD

  • apparently so.

  • Lex Luthor's first appearance in the comics was that of a middle-aged, crazy scientist with a full head of hair and I felt Gene Hackman captured the original incarnation of Luthor perfectly.

  • I think Gene Hackman is the quintessential Lex Luthor... While Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville) is, IMO, the best portrayed Lex, Hackman is still the classic Luthor.

  • well he did reveal it was only a wig, and he was indeed bald in the end.

  • good good scene

  • Look how great actor reeve was!! best superman ever

  • i agree with u 100%.He was the best actor ever to portray Superman.

  • agreed. Even though these superman movies had terrible effects, reeve made them awesome. =3

  • and ten times better then Routh.

  • This is still one of the hottest Superman scenes ever. Too bad we didnt see any close ups of Superman's crotch while he was wet. ;)

  • Reeve is superman not that new trash of superman returns whose name i can not remember

reeve is really handsome I love his crotch and butt

  • I'm sorry to anyone offended, but Christopher Reeve IS and ALWAYS will be Superman!!! no doubt!

  • love the curve and that handsome face with those blue eyes, rest in peace my darling

  • owned

  • A very beautiful film. But if one chunk of kryptonite would take Superman down, how could he lift an entire Kryptonite island in Superman Returns? Because it was a crappy film that's why.

  • The island wasn't 100% Kryptonite!!! On top of that Superman picked a spot to lift that had no kryptonite. Once the kryptonite started falling closer to him, he was being exposed to Sunlight which strengthened him. On top of that pure kryptonite doesn't seem to have the effect on him that it does in other media.

How can you hate Superman Returns it was homage to the first one. You must hate the first one too than. Because there was no action in the first one, and Lex had a real estate plane.

  • I love the first two SUperman movies, but don't care for Superman Returns at all... it comes down to characters. While attractive, Lois was bland and not the spitfiery reporter we've all come to love. Superman was immoral: used his powers to spy on Lois and her fiance, ordered a beer at a bar instead of a milk, and made moves on Lois even though she was involved with someone else whom she shared a kid with (yeah, it turned out to be Supe's kid, but we didn't know that then).

  • So what if Clark ordered a beer? I'm amazed at how many people griped about that. I've worked in a few bars in my time, and never once have I served a glass of milk.

  • Plus, it's SuperMAN... not Super-young-20-year-old-who-looks-like-he-just-graduated-from-high-school. Oh, and Spacey's Luthor paled in comparison to Hackman's. All in all, it was a weird choice to make a sequel to a film that came out 16 years earlier, with an entirely new cast, instead of starting fresh.

  • Lex was such a genius to figure out Superman's weakness.

  • There will be only one Superman and that is Chris Reeves the most beautiful, handsome, man ever!!!!

  • imagine if there were 1,000 green kryptonite hanging on Sman's neck. He would be dead for sure.

  • i love the old superman movies 100x better than 2006 superman

  • For real, if it's not Christopher Reeve, I just can't believe that it's Superman. It's a shame Richard Donner didn't get to do more films.

  • Gene Hackman is one of the best villans, along with Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino.Loved Superman cos it takes me back to the first time I've seen an american movie with slovak subtitles.:-)Don't you have the whole movie, plese????

  • Cool scene.

  • Gene Hackman really captures Curt Swan's Lex Luther.

  • amazing acting from both of them

  • I wouldn't of have let Superman go in the pool.... I wouldv'e pounded his ass!

  • Quite idiot... Why he didn't quickly closed the box before get too weak?

  • Because he had never encountered Kryptonite before. Before he really knew what was happening, he was already feeling too crappy to do anything.

  • MISS TESS MUCKER !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Lex is EVIL! desieced maniac!
