How to Change a Serpentine Belt : What is a Serpentine Belt?

my cousin replaced the alternator on my car, but in turn, has changed the tension on my serpentine belt. which is turn has cause constant squeling sound when the car is not warmed up. I have a 97 Toyota Corolla. Can I adjust the tension myself?? I don't want to have to bring this to a mechanic and pay absurd amount of money. Help me out please!!
