What an amazing player. I was lucky enough to see him play. Went to a post season game where the Bullets played the Knicks, he was incredible. Then the Knicks got him, what a back court. Can you imagine Frazier and Monroe on the team now... that would be great!
Y'all are so right... Sadly I wasn't even born til '81 and didn't see Earl or Maravich actually play but have loved watching the classic games and the ESPN specials on players from the earlier 'era' of the game. Growing up, kids my age (myself included), often laughed watching clips of these players thinking their dribbling 'goofy' and awkward... later to realize the stiff rulings on carries, dunks, etc... were the only thing holding them back from purely embarrassing the opposition further...
kobe plays very alike to this guy woah!!! this guy must have been a pearl for the game, I wish I lived these times in order to see him, he's phenomenal.
The best thing was he didn't palm the ball dribbled with in the rules; kept his hands on top of the ball. If he played today with the lax way the dribbling rules are called good God, Monroe , Frazier , West, hell every player in the day couldn't have been stopped. Zeke, Magic, Bird the Doctor all dribbled legally even the ABA players didn't carry the ball the way it's allowed in todays NBA
@tellthetruthg so true....young kids say that now players can dribble better but don't know players back then did n't allow to palm the ball and then made their dribble, something that nowday's players do all the time!imagine maravich if allow him to palm...oh my god,he would be unstoppable!oscar robertson,jo jo white, dave bing,baylor,greer...so many great ball-handlers
@AdreasTheGreat Yeah...I never thought about that....Let Maravich or Earl the Pearl palm the ball and see what happens. Broken ankles everywhere! lol
No dunks. No crazy hang time. Earl didn't need them!! No one had a touch like Earl's, and he was a magician with the ball. But above all of this,....Earl knew how to put the ball in the basket from every and any angle. LOLOL Gave Clyde FITS before he became a teammate!!
As a Knick fan, I saw many of the Pearls that Earl spun during his Knick years. To truly appreciate him, you had to see him BEFORE he became a Knick!! Thank God for video!! And he did most of this on bad knees!! No telling how great he could have been had his knees been totally healthy throughout his whole career. But then again,....He probably would NEVER have been traded to the Knicks, LOL The Bullets surely would have kept him.
big time travel at 2:41...I never saw the Pearl play, but he seemed ahead of his time...He looked as though he didn't have much hang time , but had those smooth spin moves...
Pearl was a great shooter . Great scorer too sometimes they actually are not the same shooter -scorer ask an NBA player if you don't believe it. I remember him for not being able to jump 12 in but seemed like he hung in the air like he went up 36" . Guess his release was super quick. I know one thing Walt Frasier sure was happy he didn't have to guard him anymore after he went to the Knicks One of the best Back courts ever ever I mean ever did I say ever
Nobody in today's NBA is remotely as interesting to watch as was the Pearl. That's not criticism... it's just that athleticism now dominates all sports... maybe because the players have outgrown the original dimensions of the sports.
That's right... Earl the Pearl gave Clyde fits! But that's no knock against arguably basketball's best defensive guard at the time... Walt Frazier. Of course, Frazier many times came back and scored against Monroe and/or anyone else who was picked to guard him too. For Frazier was an all around wiz. what a combination these two made back then! If Monroe had come to the Knicks much earlier in his career, I'm sure the Knicks might have won more championships.
also had the best pump fake, cause the guy was so good at drawing fouls with it. it was effective just about every time he used it.... his fundamentals were flashy and his flashy moves were fundamental.
Being a big Knick fan at the time, I was thrilled when they announced they had aquired Pearl from the Bullets and not for the most obvious reason (he was one of the league's leading scorers). No, I was happy because he and Jerry West were the only opposing guards at the time who consistently got their points against Walt "Clyde" Frazier, who was the best defensive guard at that time. We no longer had to worry about Pearl going off on us.
Earl "The Pearl" Pearl, he could dribble and swirl like dervish with a twisting twirl. Black Magic could shake and bake, fake and take, then leave defenders dizzy on the fast break. He could execute 100 moves inside a telephone booth, this video clip is positive proof. Faster than a Baltimore Bullet, he was so slick, he had a bag of magical tricks, that he also performed with the NY Knicks. When he was in his prime, he was ahead of his time, he would spin on a dime like it was a crime.
Thank you so much for this, Mr Parr. It's so beautiful I wanted to cry. And the music got right to the pith of what Earl meant to us all. He was funky and smooth. One of wonderful orginals, and a genius of the pre-above-the-rim era that started with Hawkins to Julius to MJ.
@claudine69retoke The whole deal of vertical is crap anyhow. That's WAY overrated by people who don't play real basketball but just like to watch dunks. 75 to 80 % of rebounds are taken below the rim, within easy range of a high schooler. Shooting has nothing to do with vertical either.
It's all about skill, agility and desire to be the best & Pearl was most monstrous at all of it
Earl Monroe brought the flavor of the streets to the NBA. He was Hip-Hop in a basketball uniform. I have had the honor and pleasure of meeting Mr. Monroe as an opening act for his former artist when he had Pretty Pearl Records, and he has been kind enough to be a consultant for my Krunk basketball squad along with former team mate Barry Ohrms. He is a class act all the way, and one of the best to ever touch a basketball. No question Hall Of Fame.
the spin move, the shake and bake, the fade away or the up and under. forget it. and always got just enough separation that most of his shots were from very low release points.
simply incredible. when joined up with Clyde, that was one of the greatest guard tandems in history.
This is an excellent collection of the Pearl and it absolutely ruled when it had the 70's funk/jamiroqoi soundtrack. I wish you could post it with sound...
This would really be nice with the soundtrack restored. You should appeal their decision to disable the sound. I did on one of my videos and I won the appeal and I think that the soundtrack you had would meet the copyright exemptions. Great video though. I grew up in Baltimore went to as many Bullets games as I could. The Pearl totally rejuvenated the whole city when he arrived.

This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He was AH-IGHT! Back then, they had never seen moves like that. Plus the league was majority white. Plus defense wasn't an art like it is today. Look at that flukey shit! Look how he kicks his legs up and double-pumps jumpers. What the fuck is that? He average 42 in college and was revolutionary in the pros. Who am I? Same thing I would say about Bill Russell. All them old back-in-the-day legends would get the shit smacked out of them in today's game!
total ignorance if you really believe that. and the sad part about your thinking, 30 years from now some idiot will say the same thing about today's players. say what you want to, but russell & monroe didn't get those stats playing in the peruvian basketball league.
I disagree with your 30-years-from-now assessment. All those "Legends" where from the incubation stage of the league. Every year brought something new. Here is how it went: 1. All white players 2.Integration 3. All Black players 4. International players. We are now in the MODERN ERA. There will be no groundbreaking talented players in the future. WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL! Basketball is GLOBAL now. Talent-wise we have reached our zenith!
If you mentioned those same statements to knowledgeable sports fans(anywhere in the world), you would be laughed at. As a matter of fact, you should use this material as part of a comedy act. Now you would owe me 10% of your earnings. Let me know how it turns out.
OK, if you feel that way, then answer me this: What TALENT, SKILL or HIGHLIGHT in today's basketball at the high school, college or pro level that us WORLD-WIDE KNOWLEDEABLE BASKETBALL FANS have NEVER seen before? There is none! So pay me for giving you some free knowledge. WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL!
You will never have another PEARL, PISTOL PETE, LARRY BIRD, DR J, MAGIC, MICHAEL JORDAN. They all did things that had NEVER been done before. That's why you have them stalking kids in the 8th grade now.
whatever you say--it doesn't give you(or anyone else) the right to disrespect Russell and Monroe. 2 of the greatest players ever. When you call out players in the future, you might want to do a little more research. It makes you seem like you don't know what the heck you are talking about.
I agree with you if it's about respect. I respect the old-timer greats. But that is as far as it goes. Like I respect my grandmother because she is 97 and has lived a full life. But even when I was smaller, I met Dr. J after a game in DC and was in AWE! I knew about all those players before his time at a younger age, but they NEVER had his flair. So, out of a respect-paved-the-way kind of respect, that's it. But as far as talent compared to today's players, RUSSELL, MONROE, and them SUCK TO ME!
Well i am a basketball player and fan, and I would take old school players over todays players any day of the week, Fundamentals and team defense over some guy that can jump a few more inches. Also everything in basketball is not "Known" there are plenty of new moves yet to be implemented into the NBA, I create new moves as a player everytime i play, you are an idiot, and I can own you in basketball even if you pick my teammates.
HA! HA! You idiot funky farter! There are alot of new moves that have yet to be seen? AND You create new moves everytime you play? Where is your NBA contract? I believe the whole YOUTUBE community wants to see that! Send a vid next time you go on the court. I bet you suck! As far as racist, I played with Len Bias, Johnny Dawkins and Sherman Douglass. They are from my neighborhood! You smell like a FART right now! That's why you are a FART-TALKER for 45 minutes! OOOH WEEEE BOO-BOO BREATH!!!!
I was blessed to see The Pearl back in the in the Charles Baker League growing up in Philly and believe me when I tell you, Pearl used to get to the games late, usually by or after halftime and this brother was sooooooo bad, he used to drop 50 like it wasn't nothing. Yeah, that's right, drop 50 or more after showing up by halftime.. This brother is truly one of the greatest players ever to grace a b-ball court on this planet.
made the game look easy, what a player. One of the purest players ever, dribbled like nobody can today, made the difficult shots easy, easily a top 20 player
Detroit's Cobo Arena...would be like a fashion plate back in the day. As a youngin I was like in a strance by the og's who would be in the house. My father, grandfather and uncles would be looking fly..oh yeah! The bball was good also.
I would love to see some Gus Johnson footage, got any? Show today's players that there were leapers to match todays players. I saw him knock himself cold by hitting his head on the backboard during a Knicks and Bullets game.
I don't blame Pearl for wanting to be traded. He was at a point in his career where he wanted to win a chip. He teamed with Clyde to form the Rolls Royce backcourt. Both could handle pass shoot board and defend. Defenately one of Philly's finest and proud to say he's from my hometown!
In addition to the Monroe/Frazier matchup, another classic Bullet/Knick matchup was Gus Johnson (#25, appears in this video usually under the boards) and Dave DeBusschere. This matchup was just before I got interested in watching b-ball as a kid, so I've only heard the stories. Wish I could find some video clips. From what I heard, they were two tough sob's.
We used to call MR. DeBusshere "the Butcher " He was a great player and took Boston far.I kinda remember we were shocked too when they traded the Pearl. Don't remember why the trade. Will ask my brother, he probably. Check out "Pistol Pete" Maravich he was more than people think too. '
Why did the the Pearl ask the Bullets to trade him? They were a very competitive team, having been in the 71 finals against the Bucks. Why would the Bullets trade him to their fiercest rivals? All the Bullets got for him was Mike Riordan and Dave Stallworth, so it looks kind of one-sided. Riordan was a decent player, and actually put together a couple of good years for the Bullets, helping them to reach the finals in '75. (By the way, Monroe is in the HOF as a Bullet)
Earl VS "Clyde" Walt Frazier. A lot of those baskets were against Clyde. Great seeing him sagain too. Was a Knicks fan in those years most people could not get past Clyde. Earl the Pearl YEH
And back then, you could do alot of handchecking. Take a look at Clyde guarding the Pearl at 1:18. That would be a foul today. By the way, I just watched the Knicks defeat the Magic on MSG, and Clyde and Breen announced the game as usual, but tonight they were joined by the Pearl. Good to see Clyde and Pearl re-united for a night. Some interesting anecdotes.
Earl was such an incredible player. He was not a pearl he was a diamond. When he was with the bullets, he was far and away the most exciting player I had ever seen and the most creative player in the game. He drove the knicks crazy!!!
No joke! When the Pearl went to the Knicks, Walt Frazier was probably the happiest guy in the room. Looking at this video, I wondered how many times he blew past Clyde. (Not to say that Clyde didn't do his share of gliding by people!)
vs THe Bullets from late 60s early 70s. Earl vs Clyde and later Clyde and Earl vs Archie Clark vs Phil Chenier. Where are those videos?? Why aren't THEY on espn Classic?? By the way..I would rather watch Earl the Pearl any time then watching Jordan, Kobe, Iverson,
All my friends were Knick fans and I was a Bullet fan. When the Knicks traded for Monroe that was it! I became the biggest Knick fan in the tri-state area! Coolest man alive.
What an amazing player. I was lucky enough to see him play. Went to a post season game where the Bullets played the Knicks, he was incredible. Then the Knicks got him, what a back court. Can you imagine Frazier and Monroe on the team now... that would be great!

All them old back-in-the-day legends would get the shit smacked out of them in today's game!
dmoneyswift 3 years ago
total ignorance if you really believe that. and the sad part about your thinking, 30 years from now some idiot will say the same thing about today's players. say what you want to, but russell & monroe didn't get those stats playing in the peruvian basketball league.
skuter84 3 years ago 2
I disagree with your 30-years-from-now assessment. All those "Legends" where from the incubation stage of the league. Every year brought something new. Here is how it went: 1. All white players 2.Integration 3. All Black players 4. International players. We are now in the MODERN ERA. There will be no groundbreaking talented players in the future. WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL! Basketball is GLOBAL now. Talent-wise we have reached our zenith!
dmoneyswift 3 years ago
If you mentioned those same statements to knowledgeable sports fans(anywhere in the world), you would be laughed at. As a matter of fact, you should use this material as part of a comedy act. Now you would owe me 10% of your earnings. Let me know how it turns out.
skuter84 3 years ago
OK, if you feel that way, then answer me this: What TALENT, SKILL or HIGHLIGHT in today's basketball at the high school, college or pro level that us WORLD-WIDE KNOWLEDEABLE BASKETBALL FANS have NEVER seen before? There is none! So pay me for giving you some free knowledge. WE HAVE SEEN IT ALL!
You will never have another PEARL, PISTOL PETE, LARRY BIRD, DR J, MAGIC, MICHAEL JORDAN. They all did things that had NEVER been done before. That's why you have them stalking kids in the 8th grade now.
dmoneyswift 3 years ago
whatever you say--it doesn't give you(or anyone else) the right to disrespect Russell and Monroe. 2 of the greatest players ever. When you call out players in the future, you might want to do a little more research. It makes you seem like you don't know what the heck you are talking about.
skuter84 3 years ago
I agree with you if it's about respect. I respect the old-timer greats. But that is as far as it goes. Like I respect my grandmother because she is 97 and has lived a full life. But even when I was smaller, I met Dr. J after a game in DC and was in AWE! I knew about all those players before his time at a younger age, but they NEVER had his flair. So, out of a respect-paved-the-way kind of respect, that's it. But as far as talent compared to today's players, RUSSELL, MONROE, and them SUCK TO ME!
dmoneyswift 3 years ago

Bill Russel would destroy dwight howard. Howard sucks as far as basketball skills go.

Defenately one of Philly's finest and proud to say he's from my hometown!
walibashir44 3 years ago
I think Pearl might have been the second or third best point guard in the NBA the other being Magic
lilkj20 3 years ago
In addition to the Monroe/Frazier matchup, another classic Bullet/Knick matchup was Gus Johnson (#25, appears in this video usually under the boards) and Dave DeBusschere. This matchup was just before I got interested in watching b-ball as a kid, so I've only heard the stories. Wish I could find some video clips. From what I heard, they were two tough sob's.
ddenuci 3 years ago
We used to call MR. DeBusshere "the Butcher " He was a great player and took Boston far.I kinda remember we were shocked too when they traded the Pearl. Don't remember why the trade. Will ask my brother, he probably. Check out "Pistol Pete" Maravich he was more than people think too. '
Skingtheking 3 years ago

Skingtheking 3 years ago
And back then, you could do alot of handchecking. Take a look at Clyde guarding the Pearl at 1:18. That would be a foul today. By the way, I just watched the Knicks defeat the Magic on MSG, and Clyde and Breen announced the game as usual, but tonight they were joined by the Pearl. Good to see Clyde and Pearl re-united for a night. Some interesting anecdotes.

Earl was such an incredible player. He was not a pearl he was a diamond. When he was with the bullets, he was far and away the most exciting player I had ever seen and the most creative player in the game. He drove the knicks crazy!!!
jaybou263 4 years ago
No joke! When the Pearl went to the Knicks, Walt Frazier was probably the happiest guy in the room. Looking at this video, I wondered how many times he blew past Clyde. (Not to say that Clyde didn't do his share of gliding by people!)
ronruck 3 years ago
One of the greatest rivalries ever. The Knicks
vs THe Bullets from late 60s early 70s. Earl vs Clyde and later Clyde and Earl vs Archie Clark vs Phil Chenier. Where are those videos?? Why aren't THEY on espn Classic?? By the way..I would rather watch Earl the Pearl any time then watching Jordan, Kobe, Iverson,
Labron!! HE WAS SUPER SPECIAL
