lol this video actually helped me, it is now playing with things that it has not actually touched or seen b4! thank you very much for your help, i really apriciate it!!!
What a nice bird. My U2 & my sun conure like to bite the buttons off my shirts. I have a couple birdtoy necklaces that they like too. They are made of med-sm plastic chain for toys with buttons and beads and all kinds of do-dads on it. I even wear it in public. When I take Nani (my sun conure) with me. I am very lucky to live in a small town in So Cal and I can take her with me to the drug store & post offfice and a few other places in town. We even drive a bird... T-bird that is ha ha!
Lol I have started wearing mine too. As long as its clean. What the heck people already come up to me and say locally... Are you that lady with the sanctuary in Haw River? :-) and I smile and share pictures on the spot. Meet a lot of animal lovers that way.
i can get my bird used to me. please tell me the trick to make them used to me. i have had 1 of them over 5 months now, and she still bites and flys away from me? wat should i do
well, when my own birdie (African Grey) was in the cage.....he cheekly chewed a guest's brand new jumper while we were talking to each other!......lol
Thats a really neat idea. i never would have thought of that. i might try that sometime.
my tiels have lots of toys..and they play with them all the time. they have free rane when im home..so they climb, play with toys, chew on stuff..ect. i dont believe in leaving birds in cage all the time. just when im gone. its good for their health and wellbeing.
I agree. Theres hardly a day our birds are not out of their cage for hours. They are always in when we are away. I would hate to find my little babies dead on the floor next to an outlet or wire. I did this for all the birds to have more fun when they sit with me. The shy ones come out of their shells. The bonding effect is absolutely outstanding. Pepe now lets me kiss her. Hows that for a wild captive that hasn't even been human handleable? only word social. The others stand in line... MY TURN!
What a wonderful idea for anyone wishing to spend more time with a pet that is not able to be handled yet, or even just for spending time with your pet birdie in general!
TY I take every opportunity to explore any chance to improve the quality of time spent in our world as co-habitants. I plan on making more of these. I need a BIG BIRD shirt, and a little squirt shirt. LOL cause the big bird broke the little bird buttons. Ha Hah. So I just sewed another button in that spot.
P.S. They didn't try to eat the pieces. Do they make bullet proof buttons? birds have a lot of pressure between them beaks. :-D
Also the reason you Pepe on the baby blanket all the time is because she has Bumble Foot on one foot when she came to us caused by having those wooden dowels all same sized as perches for a long period of time. When she had the stroke in December, Pepe almost lost use of one foot completely. The blanket gives her a larger more secure standing ground. we also use it to catch her if she is about to fall. Poor baby. Shes handleable now. Just not totally pet-able. Working on it though.
That is a fantastic idea. I wish I had seen this when I first got my Cheeko. He never get into playing with his toys very much. But now I will do this with my new bird "Birdie". Yeah, I know it is not a very original name, but it fits her.
A few years ago, he got a new enclosure which is larger, nicer, and has plenty of toys which I rotate periodically regardless of the fact that since the new home, he quit playing with his toys. It's almost as though if it's not on his roof, it's not woth playing with. The only thing he'll chew is his ladder, so I attached toys to that, but he chews around them, and when he chews through the rung with the toy, he flings the toy and continues on the ladder. It's bizarre.
Have you tried putting him back in the old "home" to see if maybe he is actually happier there? Some birds need to get used to the idea of a new home. Is it possible for him to have both together so he can get used to the new one better? It's hard to know why they do the things they do. I am learning that just because we think something is bigger & better doesn't mean they think so too. Just a thought. I am no expert but have 30+ birdkids and many years of experience. Just want to help ok. K&i
Are you talking about Pepe? Pepe came with a HUGE cage. Just no toys. The original owner didn't know she should provide toys. She also never held her, in the 40 years the bird was ib her family. No one did. What loneliness. Even her original owner says that. That's why they surrendered her.
Today she plays now, kisses me, cuddles in my arms and tries to get all the attention she can with me.
Once her owner came to visit and she wouldn't let go of me and leaned against my chest till she left.
I am going to try that! My bird was capitve born and I finished weaning him myself. He's very social and spoiled. When he was younger, he would play with/hang upside down by one toenail from/ and generally mutilate the toys in his cage top playpen (and reaffirm the law of gravity by dropping toys over he edge and then looking at them until I picked them up and then he'd do it all over again--brat! ;-) ), but barely touch the ones in his cage. (2 parts)
Hi there! I think this is a wonderful video with a great idea. I am acquiring a Double Yellow Headed Amazon Parrot next week. He is 5 years old, captive raised, but wild. He was been living in a small breeder cage with no stimulation or toys. I wil have to socialize him and teach him about his new environment. It will be a process similar to the one you have been doing with pepe. I've watched your other videos. They are very touching.
Is he still of breeding age? Wow you took on a great deal of work. It sounds like approx., a 3 yr job. Good luck to you. Try the Ttouch, Feather method first for touching. I used my Macaw tail feathers first, LOL It was definitely the safest method. And we have done that for months not to get her to that point. BUT that was not a breeder. Pepe was exposed to people every day.
Thanks !!

No need to go to a lot of trouble, I can chew on a printed design as well as a button.
Buttons are good chewing, though.

Pepe made her point pretty clear. Even her owner agreed, who was just couldn't get over her fear to touch her. She was deathly afraid of Pepe'
