thank you very much. i had read other texts concerning the sum of the terms, and your explanation is the best i've found. you teach very well, although you could slow down a little. otherwise, it's perfect.
LoL, folded "Into Half" would be considered a grammatical error and redundant phrase in the Writing portion of the SATI. Regardless, this tutorial of geometric progression is outstanding.
err not exactly.. for paper stack to achieve the hefty thickness of 150 million km (distance to the sun) after ONLY 10folds, this sheet of paper would need to be 150,000km thick! geometric seq doesn't progress as fast as that, given that ur sheet of A4 is somewhere around 0.08mm thick. After 10 folds thus you will have only about 8cm.
However, as you keep folding the thickness will double every time, so 16cm at fold11, 32cm at 12, 64cm at 13 and so on. So u will need to fold it 51 times.
You are just multiplying the thickness of the paper linearly, as if u stacked 100 sheets on top of each other. You are not stacking pages!! You are folding it double every time, so the rate at which thickness grows is not linear. Look at it fold after fold, given 0.08mm as original thickness: FOLD00: 0.08mm FOLD01: 0.16mm FOLD02: 0.32mm FOLD03: 0.64mm FOLD04: 1.28mm FOLD05: 2.56mm FOLD06: 5.12mm FOLD07: 10.24mm FOLD08: 20.48mm FOLD09: 40.96mm FOLD10: 81.92mm = 8.2cm after 10 folds only, not 100!
Great video, thanks

I honestly don't know what's going on about 'folding a piece of paper into half 10 times' right from the get go. :-)
donylee 3 years ago
if you fold a piece of paper 10 times it would reach the sun, proven by geometric progression

Exponential growth is often claimed as the most poorly understood mathematical concept.
The 50 folds to reach the sun concept is something people have a hard time putting their mind around.
troponinnutrition 3 years ago
well u got a small mistake.....
if u have an A4 sheet that is 0.08 after 10 folds it would .8mm thick
thats only if the sheet is 0.08..thick....so in order to get 8 cm...u will need to fold it 100 times or so :P
0.08*10=0.8
0.08*100=8.0
