yeah i think that goth IS about being yourself (it is nonconformist and meant to be about being yourself), and i think its wrong to call certain categories of goths posers, cuz it is their way of expressing their own style. it doesnt make them any less goth because goth is a lifestyle, its part of who they are, unless of course they arent being themselves.
There is no such thing as "Rivethead goth". Rivetheads (like myself) aren't goth. Industrial and military style clothing. Industrial goths are different than Rivetheads. Rivetheads are pretty much industrial metal heads. \m/

He messed up by differentiating cyber and industrial...Cyber goths dance to industrial, all the stuff he showed for cyber and "rivethead" was cybergoth stuff. Rivetheads are more the guys you see at metal concerts punching and kicking everywhere, cybergoth actually have a dance style which originates in germany. Dont try to make a goth type called rivethead....

Therefore Emo is NOT better than GOthic, I'm afraid. Why Where I live, you're more likely to often spot an emo or a somewhat emo-like dressed teen than you would a goth like me.

Thanks euphoricacid for the coment. It seems that there are goths, arrogant goths making rules for others then wannabes. Personally I let my eyes mae my decisions. If I like it I buy it. That comes from the inside, it's for real not doing soemthing because another person told me it fits or not. I make my own chokers, putting medals or crosses on them. I dont buy them. My first jacket came from Hot Topic, and the last one I bought was a Shrine of Hollywood..

@1966Daywalker You've definitely made a fine point... I think people are more concerned about routing out poseurs... that they, in a sense, become a poseur themselves. It's not about routing out unbelievers like some crusader raiding a village, it's about independence, self expression, and music. Hot Topic doesn't make you a poseur, it's just that poseurs shop there as a fast lane to become "hardcore". Primarily people who just make goth look bad. Although, if possible, I say support DIY.
Goth was founded on the DIY ethic, a desire to break away from social norms, and striving to bring out unique qualities. Stores and websites like Vamp freaks are embarrassing because they've erased this aspect and creating clones within a scene/sub-culture that wants the opposite. this is why we hate hot pockets!

yeah sometimes the types of genres will cross and the styles will mix. some goths go through different phases and different styles.
Its all about individuality so you don't have to copy everything. just get some ideas and do what you like. Don't just wear the clothes and think you will be gothic. thats what emos do.
Im not afraid to inquire, I just dont like offending people via ignorance, or lack of knowledge. Of course I'd be respectful, I know what its like to be different, and i know how stupid people can be when you are. I would hate to treat sombody else the way I have been treated for being different, so I admire anyone that dares to be themselves even if it isn't the norm.
I love the beautiful laces and velvets of Romantic Goth clothing. However, a 'poser', as I believe they are called (it may be 'wannabe') cannot pull off any Gothic look, because, as 'sexbringsdeath' said, being a Goth is a state of mind. It is not just about the clothing, it is about appreciating Gothic art, music and literature and seeing the beauty in every aesthetic aspect of the Gothic lifestyle.
Interesting point of veiw, but i dont think that just because a person doesn't fully fit into a category no matter what it is, that doesn't mean that its not their reality, mindset, or life. I should know, we have loads of categories in lifestyle but; that doesn't mean I exactly fit in any exact one description and still be who i am.

Hi I admire goths, I don't want to be one but I accept them. I'd like to learn more about them without offending, how do you become a goth and what is the goth state of mind? Whats the difference between goth labels, how do i find that out for my own curiosity
For the record this is my own opinion. But contrary to popular belief the Gothic subculture isn't some cult where you have some altered state of mind. Goths are just people who happen to like music in the Gothic genre and happen to like some of the fashion that follow. Some goths like Gothic lit or are into the vampire subculture as well. You don't "become" goth anymore than someone becomes hip hop or prep or punk or whatever. It's just about what you like personally and that's all.
oh ok, I wasnt sure and I didnt want to piss anybody off for asking dumb questions. I find the fashions interesting, and creative, I love the make up its gorgeous and artistic.
Goth to be honest was never about the clothing sure they wore black but it was very basic when they started Black fishnets for girls short dresses maybe steel toecap boots but the music is what started it Gothic Rock / Gothic Metal look up Draconia and to be a goth just be friends with some help them out ask them if you can hang with them then start buying clothes and listning to the music Goth state of mind is very relaxed and stuff very attatuide like message me if you want to learn more

I think he touches on some of the more common types of goth you can see, but it really all comes down to the individual style of each goth. They might not fit neatly into one little sub-category.

Goth was founded on the DIY ethic, a desire to break away from social norms, and striving to bring out unique qualities. Stores and websites like Vamp freaks are embarrassing because they've erased this aspect and creating clones within a scene/sub-culture that wants the opposite. this is why we hate hot pockets!

I made up my on kind of goth, I call it modern goth because most goth dress kind of old and the one i made up where more modern clothes. I just usaly wear band T-shirts black hoodies, and black pants with a chains.

yeah sometimes the types of genres will cross and the styles will mix. some goths go through different phases and different styles.
Its all about individuality so you don't have to copy everything. just get some ideas and do what you like. Don't just wear the clothes and think you will be gothic. thats what emos do.

Cyber goth is more like to say cloth like people in space, in the future etc would wear, just gothirized..
Industrial goth is wearing alot of metal platings like bits of steel plates sown in the cloth etc.

Of course I'd be respectful, I know what its like to be different, and i know how stupid people can be when you are. I love the beautiful laces and velvets of Romantic Goth clothing. However, a 'poser', as I believe they are called (it may be 'wannabe') cannot pull off any Gothic look, because, as 'sexbringsdeath' said, being a Goth is a state of mind. It is not just about the clothing, it is about appreciating Gothic art, music and literature and seeing the beauty in every aesthetic aspect of the Gothic lifestyle.

Interesting point of veiw, but i dont think that just because a person doesn't fully fit into a category no matter what it is, that doesn't mean that its not their reality, mindset, or life. I should know, we have loads of categories in lifestyle but; that doesn't mean I exactly fit in any exact one description and still be who i am.

For the record this is my own opinion. But contrary to popular belief the Gothic subculture isn't some cult where you have some altered state of mind. Goths are just people who happen to like music in the Gothic genre and happen to like some of the fashion that follow. Some goths like Gothic lit or are into the vampire subculture as well. You don't "become" goth anymore than someone becomes hip hop or prep or punk or whatever. It's just about what you like personally and that's all.

Goth to be honest was never about the clothing sure they wore black but it was very basic when they started Black fishnets for girls short dresses maybe steel toecap boots but the music is what started it Gothic Rock / Gothic Metal look up Draconia and to be a goth just be friends with some help them out ask them if you can hang with them then start buying clothes and listning to the music Goth state of mind is very relaxed and stuff very attatuide like message me if you want to learn more

I think he touches on some of the more common types of goth you can see, but it really all comes down to the individual style of each goth. They might not fit neatly into one little sub-category.
