Wincing The Night Away is in my humble opinion one of the (if not THE) best album(s) of the 2000's. I guess I was mentally "ready" for it; I bought the CD, not knowing a lot about them (it was my first Shins album), listened to it, and wanted to do my homework alongside it; but in the middle of Sleeping Lessons, something snapped, and I couldn't do anything for as long as the album was playing, but to set there with my mouth open. I reheard it over and over again, and I'm still not tired of it.

ive been trying to understand the video in light of the fact that this is about a lesbian couple in a small town... i think it's pointing to progress as being costly to the innovators, though. like the forerunners of a movement suffer for the inevitable changing of the whole. by knowing that justice is intrinsic in your cause, you are able to step over any barrier, convention, or societal norm.

Is it just me or has rock music stop progressing in terms of "hardcore" and regressed back into like the 60's and 70's pop rock? They have a Beach Boys feel to them with enough of their own style to have their own sound. I like the direction rock is taking, granted I miss the hard rock, punk, and metal bands of the 70's and 80's but most of all I miss "fun" music. Remember that? Music that was just fun to listen to? WTF are the lyrics in this song about? This could hardly even be construed as poetry. "There's no connection" is probably the only relevant part in the lyrics. Spanish conquistadors and the Salem witch trials - The works of men with evil hearts and free will. I think I'll write some vague lyrics about religious opposition featuring a video with the Roman catholic church, Stalin and communism, Hitler, Richard Dawkins, the atheist movement & propaganda and modern western pop music and media.
