  • Love LeMans. In my opinion of all the races in the world this one is in a class of its own. That said go Audi and Corvette.

  • one thing I like about a Le Mans race - watching the cars going down the Mulsanne - really can enjoy the speed difference and the faster ones manuevering amongst the slower ones - no other series/race can provide such competition and make it so fun to watch

  • I wish they would show some more of the other classes.

  • The speed record for the circuit was set in 1989 by a WM Peugeot. It had it all holes taped shut for less drag, then it went out and did 253 mph down the Mulsanne, a record to this day.

  • @Mr450 the best time by the Toyota GT-One was just 3:29.930 so don't say that is faster than the 908 and the R10, as for the Sauber and the 787B, those raced before the two chicanes were added to the mulsanne straight and the two turns after Dunlop bridge, Gropu C cars that raced after those changes take effect had times around highs 3:30's with the exception of the Peugeot 905b.

  • Well back in those days, they were group c cars except for the toyota gt1. Group C had unlimited horsepower, so some of the cars were putting out over 1000 bhp. Then the ACO deemed them to dangerous and slowed them down dramatically.

  • They had built 2 chicanes on and 2 curves after the Dunlop Bridge, thats make the race track also slower.

  • Not all of us like nascar, personally I hate it... I see nascar as a joke and enjoy sports car racing, I wish I had channels like motors tv so I could watch LMS and WRC and FIA Gt sereis.

    that's an awesome goal - wish you luck - I share the same goal, but more I'd like to build the car rather than drive it - already half way there by studying engineering, just don't know who to talk to get hired by those teams who race at Le Mans

  • The truth is in 2007 The Peugeot 908 was very unreliable in 24 hour tests so Peugeot tuned the car down to around 670hp while the Audis tuned their car up to around 690hp. Peugeot ran a low downforce configuration to try and make up for the lower horsepower, thats why they are slower through the corners.

    However for 2008 Peugeot has found reliability and have tuned the 908 to around 720 HP. Now Peugeot 5 mph faster down straights and 2 mph faster in turns. LeMans will be very close in 2008

  • and by the way, as far as this video goes...audi showed an excellent race pace that overwhelmed the peugeots, which looked a bit faster in qualifying. i guess audi kept their true performance as a surprise for the race :P

  • well there're lots of drivers who actually find the mulsanne chicane version more dangerous than the one without them, and also a lot more demanding for the car's mechanics. and the cars still do over 330 km/h on this configuration of the track, i can't see why 380-400 km/h would be that much more dangerous than 330 km/h. i mean, it's a respectable speed anyway, right? for instance, the audi r10 did 339 km/h in 2007.

  • At the 2007 Utah GP I was like 10 feet from Mcnish at the end of the race. Pretty cool, especially when he used to race against Schumacher in karts.

  • No, see I was just behind the podium on top of the pits. And unfortunately he went straight into the post race press conference. All of the podium finishers were back there talking before walking inside though. Werner, Massen, Luhr, McNish, Bernhard. It was neat. By the way, I can't see the Peugot beating the R10 Audi this year

  • The Audis are faster because the Peugeots have trouble braking and turning at the same time because the power steering was 'saturated'. Notice that is where Audi makes alot of their time.

    Peugeot most likely has solved this problem and should be much quicker at Le Mans this year

  • The fast car of the 24h 2007 did 330 moreless. But the fastest car ever through the Hunaudieres straight line was the 1988 WM Peugeot P88, it did 406km/h. The year after, a Mercedes did 401 km/h. But with the two chicanes installed in the early 90s it's impossible to rich 370km/h.

  • Even if there were no chicanes (which would be good) the speeds now would still not be as high as in the late 80s. Remember LMPs are not as powerful as group C cars. LMPs do about 340km/h with the chicanes, without they could probably reach about 370km/h the true top speed, depending on gearing and downforce. Only the group C cars broke 400km/h. However i think it's a shame that the CanAm cars of the early 70s never raced at lemans. The 917/30 could break 400km/h

  • The Peugeot managed 340km/h on the mulsanne, i'm not sure what was Audis top speed but they weren't as quick as Peugeot. i'm guessing 335km/h

  • maybe in the late 80s but not anymore, they put those chicanes on the straight, which is intended to limit the cars speed.

  • Fucking Jean Marie Balestre. He's a killjoy if there ever was one.

    FACT: when the chicanes were introduced (in 1990),there were two HUGE accidents and one HUGE failure because of the chicanes happened: Jonathan Palmer crashed on Qualifying at 215mph, Massimo Magani during the night of the race, and if I remember correctly, James Weaver picked up debris and caused his tire to deflate, finally blowing up the engine.

  • I saw a video of one of the Toyota prototypes in 1998 or so completly shatter its rear suspension coming up to the second chicane, the one infront of the the really big bumps. The tv reporter, formerly a british lemans driver who had driven with and without the chicances, said that he had something similar happen to him at that chicane; he was thankful that the chicanes had slowed the cars down or else, at a faster speed over those bumps he would have died.
